Building on the success of the well-regarded CP.2 lenses, ZEISS's CP.3 Compact Prime Lenses offer the same full-frame sensor coverage and classic ZEISS look in an updated form factor and with improved mechanics and lens coatings. This 18mm Compact Prime lens features an all-new optical design over the CP.2 variant and shares the same physical length as the 15, 21, 25, 28, 35, 50, and 85mm CP.3 lenses while maintaining identical focus and iris gear positioning with the entire set of CP.3 lenses, relative to the mount. All CP.3 lenses also share the same 95mm front diameter. Similar physical attributes across the lens line makes fitting lens accessories such as matte boxes, follow focuses, lens supports, and lens control motors easier and less time consuming.

Another feature handed down from the preceding CP.2 lenses is the interchangeable mounts. This lens comes with a Nikon F mount installed. Though, if you wish to fit your CP.3 lens to a different camera, the lens mount can be swapped by the user for a separately available mount of a different kind. If you like the bokeh in your images to be round, even after stopping down, you will be pleased to know that the 14-bladed iris, made famous by the CP.2 lenses, has been retained.

Note: While the CP.3 lenses are designed for a degree of user-serviceability regarding the mount, for ideal performance and calibration, B&H recommends that mount swaps and other lens adjustments be done by a trained lens technician at a service center.

Zeiss lenses are known for their clean and crisp image rendering. The CP.3 series of lenses is no different. This CP.3 lens will accurately color-match to other Zeiss cinema lenses inside and out of the CP.3 range. The CP.3 lenses feature improved lens coatings and anti-reflection masking over the CP.2 range for increased contrast and reduced flare, important for capturing content with the intent of an HDR-format release.

For enhanced ergonomics over the previous-generation CP.2 lenses, the CP.3 lens barrel has been reshaped to be more similar to the renowned Zeiss Ultra Prime lenses. This new shape is easier to handle, and takes up less physical space than the original Compact Prime design. An even weight distribution ensures that these lenses will be at home handheld, locked down on a tripod, or flown on a Steadicam or motorized gimbal.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does it have a 1/4 -20 thread on the bottom for a lens support?

A: The ZEISS Light Weight Zoom features a 3/8 support collar for lens support.

Q: 2. How does the focal length of these lenses on a full frame body like the LF compare to master primes on super35mm?

A: This lens can cover a full frame sensor. If used on a camera that is Full Frame it will give you an 18mm view. If you use it on a camera that has a Super 35mm Sensor it will give you a 27mm field of view.

Q: 3. Is there a servo available with this Zeiss lens?

A: A servo controller is not available for the ZEISS Lightweight Zoom LWZ.3.

Q: 4. I'm interested in the PL version of this lens. Does the interchangeable lens mount option mean there is an EF mount to use with 5D?

A: Zeiss has made the CZ.2 zoom lenses adaptable to other mounts. Zeiss lists these mounts as available. Please contact us so that we may order the mount for you.Available mounts. PL, EF, MFT, F, E.

Q: 5. is this lens has internal focus system compatible for matte box?

A: This is correct, there is no external movement of the lens barrel when focusing the Milvus 2.8/18 lens.

Q: 6. Does this lens have filter threads, and if so, what is the diameter?

A: This lens does not have a filter thread. However it does have a 114mm front lens diameter, which is common for use with matte boxes.

Q: 7. Can lwz.3 cover whole red weapon's 8k sensor?

A: The ZEISS LWZ.3 does a good job of covering the RED Helium 8K Super35 sensor. If you record in either 8K WS (1.85:1) or 8K HD (1.78:1) mode in the camera, then the 21-100 image circle is large enough to project a complete image, with slight darkening of the edges when in the widest zoom setting. When in the 8K FF (Full Frame) setting, you will see vignetting around the top and bottom of the frame. If you go past 23mm to 25mm, the image becomes quite clean from edge to edge.

Q: 8. Did Zeiss announce whether there will be an adapter for Canon RF Mount for these?

A: No, as of now, Zeiss has only announced the ZEISS Nano Prime 6-Lens Set (Sony E, Feet) in the Sony E-Mount.

Q: 9. Have they fixed their aperture communication problem with Sony? Loxia lenses have issues with bodies newer than A7iii

A: The Zeiss Nano Primes do not share components with Loxia, and are fully compatible with all Sony E-mount cameras. Zeiss has tested them extensively on everything from an A7IV to the Burano & Venice and they have discovered no compatibility issues.

Q: 10. Can these be converted to PL mount and would they cover a Monstro large format sensor?

A: No, the ZEISS Nano Prime 75mm T1.5 Cine Lens and all other lenses in the Nano Prime set cannot be modified to PL mount.

Great lens, fast and lighweight. I Could not be happier with the pictures, verry sharp.

I'm mostly a prime lens shooter and my last remaining zoom was the Sony FE 16-35 f/4, an excellent piece of glass. Since my collection of primes had grown to include the Zeiss Loxia 35 and Batis 25, I found most of my work with the FE 16-35mm to be in the 16-20mm range. When the reviews were so positive after the release of the Batis 18mm, I decided to give the lens a try knowing that it would really have to deliver in order to dethrone my wide-angle zoom. It did. Seeing is believing came to mind my first time out with this lens on a Sony a7R II. Across-the-frame sharpness is already decent wide open at f/2.8, but it gets amazing between f/4 and 8. When I compare images from the wide-angle zoom, the difference is striking. From individual blades of grass in the foreground or the wood grain of a weathered park bench, the details reach another level of sharpness. Distortion is very well controlled, but as with any ultra wide-angle lens, it's best to keep people and vertical lines (trees, buildings, etc.) away from the edges of the frame when possible. An Adobe LR profile for this lens is now available when needed. Did I mention the color rendering? The Batis 18mm has beautiful rich colors that you expect from a Zeiss lens and were also a notch above the very competent FE 16-35, IMHO. Yes, this lens is a bit larger in diameter than the Sony wide-angle zoom requiring a 77mm filter size instead of a 72mm, but the Batis 18mm is 36% lighter and very well balanced on the Sony a7R II or a7 II, both on and off a tripod. I also found the manual focus of the Batis to be very responsive and accurate. I'm partial to the OLED display and overall design of the Batis lenses and speculate that a former Audi design guru is working at Zeiss. Pros: incredible IQ, color pop, responsive AF, balance on camera, stylish build, weather sealing, Cons: none, other than I had to purchase 77mm filters Many thanks to B&H customer service for their excellent support

I'm an amateur and have nothing technical to say.... I have Sony's GM 24-70 lens which I thought gave me some good landscape shots. So I was on the fence getting a wider lens. Wow. What a difference. Gives a much bigger field of view. It's not a struggle to use in lower light conditions.

Clarity not seen since shooting Hasselblad with film. Shooting with a Sony a6300 and this lens yields edge to edge resolution than shames the results from a Canon 6D with the 17-40L , or 24-105L. No contest. Night ? perfect, non color disposed results corner to corner. Best WA i have used. Buyers note, as mentioned by others, the front lens cap has insufficient tension to stay in place with nearly any lateral bump. Many other adjectives come to mind. I wrote to Zeiss to point out the problem, the respondent denied the problem based on how many people have used the lens... so we leave it at they are great at optics, but plan on replacing the lens cap.

This is truly a great lens. When using manual focus the OLED display on the lens lets me set the hyper focal distance with night time photography. The lens is very well build other than the cheap lens cap that comes with it. And I do mean cheap. How Zeiss could let this lens out the door with this cap is a mystery. If you are smart you will buy a generic lens cap along with the lens. Trust me, the Zeiss cap won't stay on and who needs a scratch on a new lens. It is a nice lens and you won't be disappointed.

I am an amateur, so I will leave the technical details to those more qualified. I have a Sony A7s ii, and I have all three Zeiss Batis lenses which I use with the camera. The 85mm is great, and the 25mm is a fantastic lens as well, but this has become my walking around lens. The pictures are clear and sharp. It is very fast for auto focus, although I do use manual focus sometimes when the subject is complicated such as the night sky or crowded city streets where the camera has to guess its subject. The photos from this lens seem to match what the eye sees, so that photos look more true to life. If I had only one lens, this would be it for the type of photography that I do. My wife is a realtor. I have used this lens to take interior pictures of homes she has listed for sale. The pictures capture the room size and layout much better than anything she has used in the past. Zeiss lenses are pricey, but in my opinion they are worth the money.

I just received my Batis 18mm lens. It is a very imprssive lens and of great design. The sad thing is the lens cap for this very expensive lens is the chapest thing I have ever seen in my forty years of buying camera equipment. It just spells Cheap. I will be using one of my old Canon lens caps on this beautiful lens so I can protect the front element. How did they let this lens out the door with such a cheap cap is beyound me. The lens itseft is of great quailty and will probably be one of my best.

I have had the lens for about a week now and so far so good. The lens is more solid than I was expecting, but still very lightweight. It feels right on my A7rII. The images so far are super sharp. The OLED display is a neat feature and autofocus is pretty quick. I have managed some nice closeup shots too thanks to its 25cm minimum focus.

I wouldn't say no distortion, but the best I've seen at this level.
