The 45" White with Removable Black/Silver ParaSail Parabolic Umbrella from Angler has a wing-like, rounded rectangular shape that makes it a unique addition to the light-shapers available to spark and give voice to the photographer's creative expression. Especially useful in home studios, tight spaces or rooms with low ceilings, the ParaSail can be used horizontally for a wrap-around quality of light with maximum space-saving. Used vertically, the modifier has an initial wrap-around look with a dramatic fall-off, especially when feathered, that facilitates creation of lighting ratios. The versatile ParaSail also offers contrast alternatives; the black/silver backing adds punch and crispness to the output and is slightly softened by the white interior. Take off the black/silver backing for a soft neutral look.

Besides novel functioning, the ParaSail is also structurally sound - its fiberglass ribs create a uniform surface for maximum reflectance and the 8mm solid aluminum shaft provides strong support and holds flexing to a minimum. Unique, versatile and sturdy construction backed with numerous light quality options make the ParaSail a creative and practical choice for the savvy photographer.

The true parabolic shape has a wing-like rounded rectangular appearance that is useful for home studios, rooms with low-ceilings or space-challenged situations, especially when used in the horizontal mode. The large reflective surface offers maximum coverage with an impressive degree of directional control.

Used vertically the ParaSail offers an initial wrap around quality followed by a dramatic fall-off especially when feathered - useful for creating light ratios. Used horizontally, the ParaSail provides maximum wrap-around light coverage.

Fiberglass ribs and rods offer greater flexibility and resist the tendency to bend like aluminum ribbed umbrellas. The ribs create a more uniform shape for greater reflectance.

White interior with removable black/silver backing provides a dual purpose to this modifier. When used with the black/silver backing the ParaSail offers a slightly punchy quality with maximum output, while the white fabric softens the contrast. Used alone without the silver backing, the white interior produces a soft, neutral effect.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this umbrella collapsible? (Does it close shut?) If it doesn't are there any umbrellas similiar to this one that do? I am looking for something that is at least semi-portable and storeable.

A: YES. It is just like any umbrella you would use for going out in the rain (except without a handle). Collapses and slides into a storage sleeve. Very compact. Slide the metal shaft into an umbrella holder and mount on a light stand. I have two of these. They are great and inexpensive. The cover comes off so you can shoot through the white umbrella with your flash or flip it around and then put the silver/black reflector cover on and use the umbrella to reflect your flash back to your subject for a little more light control. I can do large group shots with two of these. One on camera left and camera right. You will need a system to fire your flashes or strobes remotely.

Q: 2. Is the cover completely removable? I'd like to have the option of using the cover on a Westcott Halo. The Halo doesn't come with such a cover and Westcott appears to not sell individual covers. Thank you.

A: yes, the model I have is completely removable. It comes off each umbrella tip and the top point. Hope this helps.

Q: 3. How do you remove the cover?

A: The end of each rib has a cap on it that stays on with tension when open.

Q: 4. Is there a white diffuser cover that is designed to fit the Angler umbrella? Like those made to cover parabolic umbrellas?

A: Unfortunately, a white diffusion cover is not offered for this product.

Q: 5. Where's it made?

A: As per our records, the Westcott White Satin Umbrella is made in China. Please note that this is subject to change at any time.

Q: 6. Why does this have a description of a 7mm shaft when it's 8mm? Won't work with my lights.

A: According to Westcott these umbrellas have a 8mm shaft

Q: 7. can i use this with speedlites?

A: The Angler ParaSail Parabolic Umbrella (White with Removable Black/Silver, 60") BH #ANPAUB60BSW can be used with a speedlight. You will need a stand adapter like this one BH #IMDUBAS.

Q: 8. Will this work well with the Impact SF-ABRL160?

A: Yes it should work once it's got a hole where the umbrella rod can go through.

Q: 9. Is this Umbrella compatible with the Profoto B1?

A: This umbrella is compatible with a B1. The diffused front of the B1 fills the umbrella nicely when placed near the end of the umbrellas shaft.

Q: 10. Does the Westcott 2016 have a diffuser that I can order? Or is there a diffuser from another company that I could use on it?

A: Yes we do recommend in Accessories Angler Large Umbrella Diffuser Cover (White, 45-47") B&H # ANUDCW45

Angler Para-Sail Parabolic Umbrella 60 and 45 A parabolic umbrella is fantastic when you are only using 1 light source. I have tried using full size umbrellas in a small studio, but I find they are too big and very difficult, but the Angler Para-Sail Parabolic Umbrella White with Removable Black/Silver really acts big in small places and is so simple to move around because of the shape. The Angler Para-Sail price is less than a third of what I paid for other reflector umbrellas. So if you have a restricted sized space, the Angler Para-Sail parabolic umbrella will be a cost effective solution for producing soft and beautiful light without sacrifice..... Pros Great soft light Easy to open set up and to position Key is the even light it produces in small or large area Worked great in a smaller garage/studio and at the park Wonderful quality to last years Cons The shape outside made the shadows a bit more challenging Bottom line: I loved both 60 and 45 units. They were not as difficult as working with the big full size umbrella and easier to control and ended up with great finished images.

Purchased the smallest version, and realized it was too small for my purposes. Returned it and purchased this large version. It has so many options. You can put it parallel to your subject (feathering it) to get a sharp, crisp light, with minimal contrast, yet sculpt the face. The wrap of light you get is due to its size, but more important, the curvature actually reaches the opposite side of the face with a smooth fall off. You can turn it vertically and get full body coverage (head to toe). Finally, as stated on its website, it's great in business offices with low to normal height ceilings, it allows you to raise it higher than a normal round umbrella would. This produces a crisper light than a softbox, but not quite as crisp as light from a beauty dish. It's well built, fiberglass rods. With all this said, I wouldn't recommend using it outside unless there is absolutely no wind and you still sandbag it down. This umbrella produces beautiful light, and with its different shape, allows you more options than a normal umbrella would. If you can only afford one light modifier to produce soft, but crisp light, I'd recommend this as your modifier.

I have found this new wing shape ideal for working on location for headshots in some small offices and boardrooms. The shape gives me the opportunity to use this parabolic and get the light higher. It also seems like a solid build quality, so it should outlast other cheaper umbrellas that tend to break in the wind. I always like the option with modifiers to be able to use it as a shoto through and a bounce, this parabolic lets me choose that! I highly reco this compact design for your next home or location shoot!

At first I didn't quite get the idea behind a rectangular umbrella, until I realized that when I work in a low-ceiling environment, that it would allow me to get the umbrella and flash higher up that I would with a round umbrella. This then allows me a better opportunity to get the light coming in from a correct angle. You can turn this umbrella vertically as well. All this makes it ideal for anyone who has a home studio or works in a tighter environment. Build quality is also really good.

This umbrella has a unique profile that allows it to fit closer to the ceiling or wall in small spaces. In my case I can get it 10 further up than a standard umbrella. Build quality is very good and on a level you would expect from leading brands. I imported this into the UK and have no regrets even with shipping and the UK Duty.

I shoot a lot of indoor work where the rooms are rather tight and there is little space to more around. A normal umbrella doesn't get high enough before hitting the ceiling. They were smart enough to trim off the top and bottom of the umbrella to make it more compact and usable in tight spaces. I have both the 45" and the 60" and really like the coverage and quality of the light. I usually use it as a white umbrella and don't have any hot spots or radical falloff. I just wish they had come up with this idea earlier. Even though the price is pretty cheap they seem to have quality and I believe the item will last quite some time.

I finally had to opportunity to use this produce.  I was shooting my photos for my nieces prom.  I had the living room set up like a studio and the parasail worked perfectly.  I am happy with the results.
