Designed to balance the overall exposure within a high-contrast scene, the 85 x 110mm Hard-Edge Graduated ND Filter from Formatt-Hitech is ideal for situations involving both bright and dark areas, such as an open sky and shadowed foreground. Half of the filter has 0.9 neutral density and the other half is clear, with a hard-edged transition between the two that is ideally suited for use with long focal length lenses or when there is a defined, uninterrupted horizon, such as a seascape. By reducing the exposure in selective areas, you are able to balance the overall exposure of the scene in order to gain detail in both bright and dark areas.

This filter is constructed from lightweight, durable optical resin, which is also designed to maintain image clarity and not affect the overall color balance of the scene. It measures 3.3 x 4.3" / 85 x 110 mm, is 1.5mm thick, and is suitable for use in 85mm filter holders.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Where is this filter made?

A: The Formatt Hitech 82mm Firecrest Graduated ND 1.2 Filter is crafted in the United Kingdom.

Q: 2. Are the stops marked clearly?

A: Formatt Hitech 67mm Firecrest ND 1.8 Filter (6-Stop) is a solid ND so it only blocks 6 stops. A variable ND filter would have marked stops on the ring such as this Tiffen: https://bhpho.to/2SR9RfT

Q: 3. For taking direct pictures of the sun does the sun come out black and white (b+w) only?

A: No. It is color. It will shade the lens for longer exposure. Love mine!

Q: 4. Is the format Hitech 82mm Grad ND a glass filter?

A: Yes, it is a glass filter

Q: 5. Would the Formatt Hitech 82mm Firecrest Graduated ND 0.9 Filter which has 7.5 thickness ring produce vignetting when using on a Canon 24-70 2.8L II lens (82mm filter size) at 24mm f/2.8? (I'm concerned due to the 7.5mm thickness).Thank you very much!

A: No, it is not too wide for the filter to create vignetting.

Q: 6. What is the difference between a "Graduated Blender Filter" and Graduated ND FIlter?

A: Blender Grads have a light density on bottom half of the filter with a gradual transition to the ND effect in the top half. They are primarily used for light reduction in skylines of landscape shots. Blender grads have a soft transition perfect for hiding any obvious transition that can be found in soft or hard edge grads. when it comes to ND with hard transitions think of tele lens when it comes to soft think wide angle lens.

Q: 7. I have the LEE 100mm foundation kit with the 105mm CPL. Can I use this Hitech filter in front of my CPL - And then thread the CPL filter on to this graduated filter?

A: No, this filter rotates like the polarizer. It'll be too hard to see the effect of the ND moving around and the polarizer moving. I found it hard enough to see the effect of the 2 stop ND thru my lens in dawn light. I had to put a mark on the metal ring to see where the center of the top of the filter is so I could quickly set up the shot.

Q: 8. Where is this filter made?

A: According to our records, the Formatt Hitech 77mm Firecrest ND 1.8 Filter (6-Stop) is made in the UK. Please note that this is subject to change at any time.

Q: 9. what kind of lens cap can be used? (It appears too shallow for normal lens caps)

A: You can use a screw in lens cap. There is one listed as an accessory below the item on our web page.

Q: 10. What are the rings made of?

A: I would say light weight metal. Not 100% sure. Very nice filters. I have 6 of them.
