Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the 100-400 significantly better performance and optics than the apsc 70-350? I realize that it is FF vs Crop, but am interested in the slightly longer reach and slightly faster aperture.

A: The 100-400 is better in low light being f/5.6 vs 6.3 on the 70-350. And is optically a sharper lens as well.

Q: 2. How do the programmable buttons and focus ring operate with the sleeve in place. Is the tripod mount on the lens covered as well and will it still easily rotate?

A: This product is a series of material rings you apply. This allows you to manually focus as well as rotate the lens horizontal and vertical. And lastly, the buttons are open to use.

Q: 3. using this lens on the a6600 body, which teleconverter would be better for wildlife and nature photography? The 1.4x or the 2x?

A: Both the 1.4x and the 2x teleconverters are fully compatible. The 1.4x would turn the lens into 140-560mm f6.3-8 while the 2x would be 200-800mm f8-11. So while the 1.4x would be better in low light and/or at lower ISO ranges, the 2x would be better for longer focal ranges which could determine whether or not you capture the shot of a skittish animal.

Q: 4. Has anyone experienced any condensation issues with having this on the lens all the time or issues with operating the controls?

A: No issues have been experienced with condensation or with operating the controls

Q: 5. Does this kit include the lens hood? I would imagine but it is not in the picture

A: Yes!

Q: 6. Can image stabilization be used while on a tripod without blurring the image?

A: You don't use it with any lens while on a tripod.

Q: 7. sony lens firmware update

A: The Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS Lens' latest firmware update was issued on 07/02/2024. Please review the links below to find this option: https://bhpho.to/3YnKP8S

Q: 8. Can this lens be used with Sony Alpha 6300?

A: Hi, this lens will work with the Sony Alpha 6300 with one exception. When a Teleconverter (SEL20TC) is mounted, aperture values over 64 in the Exposure Setting Guide will not be displayed correctly.

Q: 9. Does sony make an adapter so I can mount this to my iPhone?

A: Good one (not).

Q: 10. Why is there a sliding vent in the lens shood?

A: Hi Chris - the slide opening in the lens hood is to allow for adjustment (turning) of a polarizer filter without having to remove the lens hood itself.

I've had this lens about 3 weeks, and it is excellent so far. It seems bright & clear, making for high resolution photos. The size & weight are very manageable, and the zoom collar works smooth & easy. The lens function buttons are also very handy.

Last year I transitioned from Canon to Sony and I recently sold my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM and a 2X Extender in order to buy this lens. That Canon lens was super sharp and this new Sony is its equal in terms of image quality, plus it's lighter in weight. Of course the lighter weight is due to it not being a fast f/2.8 lens. I would say that my only gripe is that this Sony lens is very expensive considering that it's f/5.6 at 400mm, but I guess there are no comparable alternatives, so it is what it is.

If you’re needing a bit more boost that your 70-200 isn’t giving you, this is the lens. I shoot everything from portraits and sports, to landscapes and wildlife. The 70-200 just wasn’t giving me the reach I needed so I decided to sell it to get this beast. I love this lens. It’s been the new workhorse when covering the disaster in Cedar Rapids.

Not only is the lens great on a tripod, it is surprisingly good in handheld situations. The automatic focus works well when you take the time to ensure that you are set on your subject and not a limb or flower in the vicinity.

A little on the heavy side but produces stunningly sharp images. I have mine paired with a Sony a7riii and I’m just blown away with what it can do. Pricey but worth it.

The ISO is no longer an issue with the Digital cameras so the aperture is not a critical requirement for fast moving subject but the Bokeh still need bigger apertures. For this range of price, this lens offers more than I can expect.
