Ready to experiment photographically with far-out color and an alternative medium like cotton? Blue Sunprints provides exactly what you need to make awesome orange prints in the sun with their Cyanotype Cotton Squares - 6 x 6" (25 Pack, Orange). The resulting print will be the original orange color wherever you placed your design and the negative space will be a deep, dark hue that pushes all that brilliant orange to the forefront. Your images will pop! Whether you're creating standalone works, or you're incorporating them into clothing or other fabric, your images are sure to get noticed.

Each cotton square is pre-washed and pre-treated, and all 25 pieces come sealed in a black light-safe bag. Take them out right before you're ready to expose for the freshest, brightest image possible. Once one side is done, the cotton square can be turned over to expose a totally different design on the other side. When finished exposing, rinse the sheet clean. Due to its archival nature, you'll be able to wash and rewash the cotton without losing contrast or color.

1. Choose your design
Your design choices are nearly endless. Here are some ideas: Drawings or photographs that have been printed on transparencies or acetate. Actual objects such as leaves, flowers, string, toys, letters, hands, jewelry. Experiment with photographic negatives, x-rays, cut-outs or clip art, lace, and sheer fabrics. Use your imagination - try anything! Once you have chosen your design, lay it on the cyanotype material. To hold your design in place during your sun exposure, use a piece of clear glass or Plexiglas for a tight contact or lay your design loosely if there is no wind. You can also choose to pin your design down into a piece of cardboard or foam core

2. Expose your sun print
First make a test print by exposing your design in the sun for different lengths of time on a small section of cyanotype material (use the test print chart included in the instructions as a guide). Then choose the best exposure time to get the tone you want. To print on both sides of the cyanotype material, first expose one side to the sun using your desired exposure time, then turn the material over, lay the same or different design on the second side and expose it for any time you choose. Once you have exposed your sun print, remove your design

3. Rinse your sun print
When you rinse your print in water for a few minutes (until the water runs clear) your cyanotype print will begin to appear immediately. The print will be a dark hue and your design will be the original orange color of the paper. If you want a darker effect, spray hydrogen peroxide on your rinsed print. The darker color will appear instantly

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the standard exposure time for this paper in strong sunlight please?

A: It really depends how strong the sun is outside. I used around 7 minutes. Try doing tests strips on smaller sheets of the cyanotype paper (do not cut the paper in direct light). Remember, the more time in the sun, the image becomes darker. Too much sun will leave you with just blue paper.

Q: 2. Are instructions included?

A: No, instructions are not included. I got instructions from my Photography professor.

Q: 3. What are the washing instructions?

A: The manufacture says, Cyanotype Store Cyanotype T-Shirt (Adult Large, White) is prewashed. I would wash it on cold or maybe warm water. It should be stable at any temperature really after it was washed the first time. Cyanotype is stable

Q: 4. I'm assuming this won't fit the Convergent Design Odyssey 7Q+, but just in case, does anyone know for sure? Thanks.

A: Hi, I purchased this small bag for my 7 monitor kit about a month ago. I returned it to B&H because, although the monitor fit in the bag, there was no room for the related components: 2 batteries, charger, cables and mounting hardware. It is a really nice, well made bag. It has the pro look, but it was too small for my monitor and accessories.

Q: 5. What size is the inner diameter of the metal leg, wondering if these would also work on a Kupo stand?

A: The inner diameter of Matthews Rubber Feet for C-Stand (Orange, 6-Pack) is 20mm.

Q: 6. hi. will this fit a canon A1?

A: It would be too small.

Q: 7. What kind of resolution can you get from using a 5 x 7 B&W negative on this shirt?

A: The shirt does not have resolution. The quality of the image the shirt can produce would depend on the quality of the negative.

Q: 8. Does this stuff have an expiration date on the box? How long will it last in the unopened box? Thanks

A: They do not print an expiration date on the box but they do estimate it should last about 2-3 year un-opened.

Q: 9. Exposure time

A: Exposure time for cyanotype prints can vary widely, depending on time of day, intensity of sunlight, latitude, etc. Generally, from 1 to 44 minutes is the range.

Q: 10. Is this paper pre-treated with cyanotype chemicals, or is it intended to be treated by the end user with chemicals purchased separately?

A: Flic Film Cyanotype Paper (A4, 30-Sheets) must be treated before making an image.

This paper is a nice weight. It develops evenly and produces a crisp image if the object / negative is crisp. Fair midtones - I'm not going for a lot of subtle midtones so can't comment beyond that. The paper is good quality and weight for subsequent work on the print (watercolor, colored pencil, ink, printing). Good value.

I ordered these for an assignment in a History of Photography class. They work as expected, but much patience and experimentation is required, and that's what makes them so addictive. Most consistent results were achieved in direct sunlight, but indirect sun works too. My kids LOVED making their own designs. 'Alternative' photographic processes are all the rage right now, and cyanotypes are a great way to get started.
