The Porta Brace ATV-F4 is a military-style audio tactical vest designed to safely hold and provide convenient access to a Zoom F4 recorder and related accessories for sound recordists, mixers, and boom operators in ENG, television, video production, and field recording. Combining the functionality of a bag and harness, the adjustable vest delivers comfortable support and even weight distribution while preserving mobility and equipment access. Padding minimizes fatigue, and the mesh back ensures breathability.

Attach your most commonly needed items to the front of the vest, and store lesser-needed contents on the rear. An NP1 pocket offers a consistent location for your batteries, with additional storage courtesy of an iPad pouch, phone and pen holders, and a rain cover that can serve as an extra pouch. Between recordings, a dedicated clip can hold your boompole so you can rest your arms.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. One of the complaints for this bag and while using a Zoom f8n are you cannot leave an xlr cable plugged in and zip the bag. Would using a right angled xlr cable solve this issue?

A: In theory, an XLR cable with right angle XLR male in the proper orientation may help with the described issue of not being able to close the zipper on the ORCA OR-272 Sound Bag for Zoom F4 and F8N when cables are connected to the recorder inside the bag.

Q: 2. Does the bag detach from the vest?

A: Yes - the system is modular and the components detach from the vest.

Q: 3. Is the bag removable from the harness and does it come with a separate shoulder strap?

A: No, it's an all in one package. Everything is attached making it have better support. ( There are attachments, like extra pockets and other holders that can be taken on and off) . It's great for run and gun stuff, nothing bouncing around while you're on the move, and It's easy to slip on and off. Also the boom holder that comes with it, is very helpful.

Q: 4. can you open the bottom to give space for the optional capsules that zoom makes?

A: The bottom of the ORCA OR-272 Sound Bag for Zoom F4 and F8N does not open. The bag does feature side compartments on both sides for storing accessories, however.

Q: 5. Is there an environmental cover that fits?

A: Yes, the ORCA OR-35 Audio Bag Rain Cover (B&H # OROR35) can be used as an environmental cover for the ORCA OR-272 Sound Bag.

Q: 6. Does this product (Porta Brace ATV-633 Audio Tactical Vest for Sound Devices 633) come along with the bag for the 633? I know the title says Tactical Vest but the pictures show the bag and nowhere in the description does it say that the bag is not included or that the bag is sold separately.

A: The bag at the front is included as part of the vest/harness and fits the Sound Devices 633 and Zaxcom MAXX.

Q: 7. which pouches and accessories do NOT come with the vest? NAB gave me the impression this item is only the vest as the boom clip, pouches, and other items seen in the picture are sold separately. thanks for the help!

A: The long list of features includes: a modular iPad pouch, an innovative new boom clip, a removable pouch that can attach to either the front or back, a separate modular phone/pen holder, which is interchangeable with the iPad sleeve. In addition, there is an NP1 pocket situated under the mixer and a double vinyl rain cover that opens up and acts as a pouch.

Q: 8. Could you use an h6 in this?

A: The OR-272 is designed for larger field recorders like the Zoom F8n and F4 models, but you could fit the H6 in the front or back pockets along with the larger recorder. If you want a case for the H6 only, We do have other cases that are specifically for the H6, like the Zoom PCH-6 Protective Case for Zoom H6 Handy Recorder (B&H # ZOZPCH6), Auray RP-ZH6 Protective Pouch for Zoom H6 Handy Recorder (B&H # AURPZH6), or Porta Brace AR-ZH6 Case for Zoom H6 Pro Handy Recorder (B&H # POARZH6). You could also use a case like the PRO TEC Deluxe Portable Audio Recorder / Camera Case (B&H # PRPR910) or Gator Cases Micro Recorder Pack (B&H # GAGMICROPACK) to hold the H6 and additional accessories.

Q: 9. What is the sizing for this vest? I'm 6.2FT with a 38 waist. Would this fit me?

A: I am 6.3FT 34 waist, it fits me pretty well.

Q: 10. When can I buy it?

A: Expected availability: 6-8 weeks

The H6 as a whole ROCKS... but with the addition of the XLR capsule, i was able to capture the key elements of a live show with clarity, and bring the stacks back into the studio for processing.I love the physical trim pots and pads. This wasn't a problem for me, but if you buy this unit be aware that although the onboard XLRs have phantom power, the XLR capsule does not.... just plan your track assignments wisely. The band I'm working with is purchasing a second H6 and XLR capsule so we'll have 12 tracks for live recording.

i had searched high and low for this since buy the ZOOM. i have virtually every part known now. but, i have since discovered more since perusing the BandH site. this XLR plug in is genius as the whole ZOOM is as well. we use it to record radio programs in advance. it works perfectly.

I recently used this on a shoot where I needed additional mic inputs beyond the 4 that that the Zoom H6 gives you. I was able to record on all 6 channels of the H6 with wired inputs. It can accept both XLR and 1/4 jack inputs and has manual volume control for both channels, making adjustment easy to make on the fly.

This is a great option to have for the H6 and H5. Wish this came bundled with the H6 rather than those extra mic options, but it is great to have the flexibility to add true 6-track recording to the H6 when those situations call for it.
