Ilford Ortho Plus is a medium speed black and white negative orthochromatic film that is especially well-suited for continuous tone copy or reproduction work, as well as for half-tone, technical, and forensic applications. It has a nominal sensitivity of ISO 80/20° when exposed under daylight conditions, or ISO 40/17° when exposed under tungsten lighting, and can be developed in standard black and white chemistry. Additionally, since the film is only sensitive to blue and green light, it can be handled under red safelight conditions and developed by inspection for precise processing control. Its high-resolution, fine grain structure and long tonal range also make it ideal for producing faithful reproductions of original artworks and documents, as well as for photomicroscopy.

This item is one box of 25 sheets of 12 x 20" film.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does all the film come in a single bag, or are there multiple bags inside of the box of 100?

A: Four bags x 25 sheets each.

Q: 2. Someone can informe me about the reciprocity of the Ilford Ortho Copy + 4x5? i want to use this film with a pinhole camera.

A: On page two of the following PDF, there is a graph that shows the amount of time you would need to add to various metered exposure times. http://bit.ly/1V4RhsS

Q: 3. manufacturing date ?

A: B&H buys and sells film in bulk. In general we regularly maintain fresh film stock. All of our film is at least 6 months from expiration (typically much longer). Anytime film stock is less than 6 months from expiration we sell it in a separate section and label it as short-dated film and also price it with a slight discount (again due to the volumes we sell this rarely occurs). Unfortunately we do not have access to our inventory to hand inspect the expiration date of any of our films prior to purchase.

Q: 4. Is this a continuous-tone film, or a "lith" type emulsion (very high contrast) for repro work?

A: The Ilford Ortho Plus Black and White Negative Film (12 x 20", 25 Sheets) is Orthochromatic B&W Negative Film. It is high contrast. Ideal for Tech. & Half-Tone Applications.

Q: 5. expiry date?

A: B&H buys and sells film in bulk. In general we regularly maintain fresh film stock. All of our film is at least 6 months from expiration (typically much longer). Anytime film stock is less than 6 months from expiration we sell it in a separate section and label it as short-dated film and also price it with a slight discount (again due to the volumes we sell this rarely occurs). Q: 6. The product description mentions that this film can be pushed to ISO 3200. Would the results be similar to the Ilford ISO 3200 (120) film, which I use for medium format? I do a lot of night photography (available light - no flash) and was wondering what kind of results I would get with this 4x5 film if pushed to ISO 1600 or even ISO 3200. Thinking of moving to 4x5, but I want to hear what people have to say about the film pushed to 1600 or 3200. Thanks!

A: HP5 is rated 400, which means it's actually around a 200 ASA film. I use it all the time, and NEVER push it. If you're working with a 4 x 5 camera (or a pinhole) you are on a tripod and should not really need to push it. I believe it is still possible to find Delta 3200 in 4x5, which is what I would recommend if you want to shoot in really low light.

Q: 7. Does anyone know if the bags in the box are sealed and/or lightproof?

A: Not sealed. folded over and light proof. Still, open only in the dark.

Q: 8. Is it okay to open the box in daylight? Are the film sheets protected enough inside the wrappers in the box?

A: I would advise against opening a box of film in daylight.

Q: 9. It loads the same as conventional 4x5 film, in the film holder?

A: Yes, it loads the same as conventional film.

Q: 10. is it a fresh film?

A: B&H buys and sells film in bulk. In general we regularly maintain fresh film stock. All of our film is at least 6 months from expiration (typically much longer). Anytime film stock is less than 6 months from expiration we sell it in a separate section and label it as short-dated film and also price it with a slight discount (again due to the volumes we sell this rarely occurs). I recently switched to FP4 Plus from HP5 Plus in hopes of greater contrast. It delivers. Developed in Moersch Tanol Speed, the film can be exposed at EI 160, above Ilford's ISO rating, with no visible grain at moderate enlargements. Great shadow detail and tonal separation, and the highlights spread out on a long shoulder. The film base is easy to work with and I do not find it to scratch easily. I use it mainly for portraiture and still-life.

Ilford FP4+ is my first choice when I have plenty of light for exterior photography and when I am working in the studio shooting portraits. My developer choice for this film is either Pyro PMK or Pyrocat MC using a Jobo processor or tray development. The film scans very well and with the above mentioned developers works great for handmade alternative processes like platinum, albumen and kallitype. I would suggest lowering the exposure index for obtaining optimum results.
