Expand your system's recording capability with the Focusrite Scarlett OctoPre, a slim 1 RU rackmount device laden with eight Scarlett microphone preamps and onboard high-resolution AD converters—a perfect addition to any home/project studio, live sound mixing console, or mobile recording rig that has available ADAT digital inputs or unused analog line inputs.

All eight XLR-1/4" combo inputs can accept mic- or line-level signal, and the front-panel input jacks can also accommodate the 1/4" outputs of instruments, letting you plug a guitar or a bass straight into the Scarlett OctoPre. Pads on every channel allow you to capture the sound of high-level sound sources such as drums and cranked guitar amps, and 48V phantom power can be instantiated in two 4-channel banks to run condenser microphones and active DI boxes.

These features, combined with the wordclock sync I/O and 5-segment LED metering, render the unit quite suitable for use in the studio. But that's only one of its intended uses: the Scarlett OctoPre also operates well in live sound environments, providing eight additional preamps for the stage, all feeding their respective line outputs, so they can feed a multitude of mixers, consoles, and PAs. You can even route the line outputs to a console while simultaneously recording digitally via the ADAT outputs.

The Scarlett OctoPre is outfitted with eight natural-sounding Scarlett microphone preamps on XLR-1/4" TRS combo jacks. All eight inputs can accept mic- or line-level signal; the first two inputs (located on the front panel) can also accept Hi-Z signal from instruments thanks to Hi-Z switches. The +48V phantom power is selectable per 4-channel bank (for channels 1-4 and 5-8), allowing the Scarlett OctoPre to handle dynamic or condenser microphones.

All inputs on the Scarlett OctoPro are running through Focusrite precision 24-bit conversion at up to 192 kHz resolution with 109 dB dynamic range. Dual TOSLINK optical ADAT outputs support eight channels at up to 96 kHz or four channels at 176.4/192 kHz.

With high-headroom inputs and a pad (-8 dB) on every channel, the Scarlett OctoPre is ideal for tracking drums as well guitars, keyboards, vocals, and more.

Eight balanced line-level outputs, sourced directly from the inputs, allow the Scarlett OctoPre to be used in a live situation whilst capturing the recording via the digital ADAT output.

The rear panel offers BNC jacks for wordclock input and output, enabling proper synchronization with other digital equipment such as a mixing console or an audio interface.

Clustered together for visual convenience, 5-segment meters show your input levels for all channels at a glance.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. hi. can i send stems from my daw through this unit to be processed on an outboard mixer and have the processing recorded back. how is the ad/da conversion

A: You can run audio tracks out of your DAW through this interface to then go out through the balanced line outputs. The processed audio can go back into the line inputs to record in your computer. The AD/DA conversion is very good.

Q: 2. How many of the inputs can be recorded simultaneously are are available inside a DAW?

A: You can record up to 18 mono channels at a time.

Q: 3. 8 inputs?4 xlr mics and 4 1/4 simultaneously ?

A: The Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 features (4) XLR mic pre's on the front panel as well as (4) 1/4 line inputs on the rear all accessible simultaneously.

Q: 4. Does the other 6 inputs have pad and instrument/line in controls?

A: Hello Mohammed,The other 6 inputs wont have instrument input or pad control.only the two in the front have instrument and pad.

Q: 5. It says it comes with Abelton Live Lite, but isn't that a free on Abelton's website? Why do they mean when it comes with a license to a free program?

A: The 18i20 includes a bundle code which allows you to download several different software programs such as an exclusive Focusrite edition of Pro Tools | First Pack, Ableton Live Lite, the Softube Time and Tone Bundle, Foscusrite's Red Plug-In Suite, and a library of LoopMasters samples. So the included bundle code allows you to access more software than just Ableton Live Lite.

Q: 6. What is the improvement from the 18i8 first generation to the second generation 18i8?

A: The primary improvement is sampling up to 192k/24-bit, as opposed to the first version which topped out at 96k/24-bit. Focusrite also claims to have improved headroom on instrument input and better gain structure. Also, only the second generation works with the new Focusrite software app. I've been very happy with my second-generation 18i8 (so happy that I replaced a FastTrack Ultra 8R on my music computer with a Scarlett 18i20). If you get one, I'd recommend either having a fast computer or making sure there are a minimum of background processes running when you use. I also set the ASIO buffers quite high. Hope this helps.

Q: 7. Can i connect Bluetooth headphones to it ?

A: No. This interface has no bluetooth capibilities. Wired connections only.

Q: 8. Does it have a TRS phone insert?

A: This unit does not have a TRS insert.

Q: 9. On Windows 8.1, do the different channels appear in separate devices or do they show up as separate channels on a single device?

A: Tim, These use a focusright scarlett software as a controller that displays all the channels in a single mixer style software consol. Regards,Rob

Q: 10. Could someone explain how they get 18 Inputs? At best I see 15, and 4 of those can only be used by 1-type of input or another on the front panel.

A: The optical input is ADAT. That counts as 8 inputs alone.

Looking for pro-quality equipment with a starter budget...this is the preamp for you. This preamp was provided the perfect quality for the 'at-home' recording studio I needed, plus the guidance by the B&H staff, it was made it super easy to put my system together.

I was looking for portable mic pre that was quiet and transparent to add to my arsenal. I've also downsize significantly from the last jo, (with room full of gear) to a single desk, software plugins and rack-less gear that occupies a small footprint. The ISA One fits that desire nicely. It's very quiet and absolutely transparent. Which matters to me when I edit in post and not have to consider hardware added character, or going the extra mile when I find a need to cover it up or remove it. Especially when applying filters to work within the floor and to remove subtle room noise, staying in the gaps where its needed without cutting into the content. Upon first hookup and dial in, I was really surprised at how quiet my treated room is and that my previous gear, even when zero gained, still added something to the mix, (I had to confirm that with previous work that I thought was quiet). This simply adds nothing but gain only. In the past, most of my stuff wound up as highly compressed on the web, or going back to tape and noise was gained anyway due to the conversion. Not anymore. The edge this tool gives me will be realized in the final render. Glad I bought it.

As most of you have noticed by now, it's extremely difficult to find software drivers in an audio interface that also work with 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound in Windows. Focusrite makes awesome drivers for Windows that work in both ASIO and WDM. I previously fought for over two years with an expensive Antelope Discreet 8 Synergy Core interface. Antelope's drivers on Windows are slow and unreliable AND they do not work in any way for 5.1 surround setups outside of the DAW. I consulted with the Antelope audio engineers and they said that their drivers will not work for 5.1 games or movies. I'm never buying another Antelope interface ever again! The Antelope hardware is great, but the drivers are garbage for Windows users. There's a night and day different between Antelope's drivers and Focusrite's drivers in Windows.

The Focusrite Control software also searches and handles any firmware updates automatically. After you install the Focusrite Control drivers, in you Windows Sound options you can click on the Focusrite USB driver and get a Configure button at the bottom. Clicking on that Configure button takes you to the Speaker Configuration where you have the following choices: Stereo, Quadraphonic, 5.1 Surround, and 7.1 Surround. From there any games you play that have 5.1 surround like, Alien Isolation, Division 2, Tome Raider, etc. will work perfectly! Also movies going through my Cyberlink Power DVD software sound amazing!

By the way, for my setup, I'm running the Scarlet 18i20 3rd Gen, two Adam A77Xs and three Adam A7Xs (looking to also get an Adam Sub8 in the near future). So if you are a 5.1 sound junky like I am, and you want your DAW, your games, and your movies to run through your audio interface with reliable drivers that just work in Windows... then you'll want to stick with Focusrite!

Nice preamp, transparent, clean. Gotta be the quietest I've owned, it puts the pre in Focusrite's own voicemaster pro to shame. Better than the pre's in my Yamaha console Figure this will work nicely with my 416 for voice

I bought this to supplement my Manley and Presonus preamps in my studio. The ISA One is VERY transparent, and sounds great on any mic I plug into it. Plus the headphone out option is very handy when tracking vocalists in the booth so I can hear them while I'm arming and disarming tracks without any cutout in my monitors. Great value and very portable.

The ISA One is a great option for most situations that need a strong signal to help their recording pop. This pre has 80db of gain total and is much hotter than may other mixer/stand alone pres. The sound quality is bright and full. On guitars it gives a wonderful pump on the top and keeps the high frequencey detailed. If you are not used to a strong pre, this one will definately make you feel like your other pres are dark and colorless. The only complaint I have for this pre is that on very delicate sources like pianos or strings, it can add too much mid tones and make the strings sound very processsed rather than natural. This is not a negitave so much as it is a comment on its best uses. Again great for horns, guitars, bass, drums, and any other source that needs a little bit of pump to make the sound fuller.

After lots of research, I decided to go with the 18i20 as it would not only fit my initial needs, but also be something I can grow with. This is the first interface I've ever purchased or used and I must say it is very user friendly. Focusrite does a great job of providing a database of videos to get you on track. As always, B&H offers awesome customer service and fast shipping.

Look real good in my studio set up. This pre makes all my recording sound way better. It has a full sound and a nice top end to it. just one look at the waveform and you can tell that its capturing more of what you may want in a recording it gets a 10 for vocals so far i have done six songs with it and i look to do more and more all the time . i have no bad comments on this pre a must have as a font end If you are looking to step up from a mixer or audio interface.
