A versatile wide-angle zoom, the Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 8-18mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. Lens from Panasonic is a 16-36mm equivalent lens that blends optical excellence with durable, refined physical design for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Designed in collaboration with Leica, this lens employs a series of low dispersion and aspherical elements to realize sharp and clear imagery with controlled fringing and aberrations, and a Nano Surface Coating also helps to minimize flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy. The durable metal lens body is splash, dust, and freezeproof for use in trying environmental conditions, and a fast 240 fps autofocus drive suits both photo and video shooting in a variety of working situations.

One aspherical ED element, three aspherical elements, two extra-low dispersion elements, and one ultra high-refractive index element all combine to suppress color fringing, chromatic aberrations, and spherical aberrations for high clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy.

Nano Surface Coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Fast 240 fps autofocus drive delivers smooth, accurate, and quiet focusing performance to benefit both stills and video applications.

Splash, dust, and freezeproof design benefits working in inclement weather conditions.

Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What focal lengths get to be at F2.8?

A: These are the widest apertures at given focal lengths...8mm - f/2.89mm - f/3.110mm - f/3.212mm - f/3.414mm - f/3.618mm - f/4(I got this answer from a YouTube video)

Q: 2. Would this be suitable for real estate photos mounted on a GH5?

A: This is a wide angle lenses that will work with the camera, because of the wide angle in will have good application with real estate photography.

Q: 3. For stills, is it sharp handheld with GX8 and its 4 axis stabilization? Would there be a nicer prime to work with GX8 or Panasonic zoom (wide shots) for dual stabilization?

A: I find the 8-16 to be quite sharp. I use the GX8, as well. The 8-16 is my only zoom lens. I shoot primes (the PanaLeica 15, 42.5 and a Leica 28 Elmarit, using the Novoflex adapter). I suppose there's a faster WA prime out there. But for my shooting style (primarily Street), I like having the focal length options from ultra-wide to the standard Street focal length of about 35mm that that lens gives me. It's a great lens. Great build. Leica designed. And you can throw a filter on the end, to protect it. Something you couldn't do with the previous version (the 7-14) which I'm selling now that I have this lens. Hope that helps.

Q: 4. Does the Lee Seven5 filter system vignette @ 8mm with this lens?

A: See Cameralabs review - usable with two filters and no vignetting.

Q: 5. How good is this lens for video while walking ?

A: To be honest, results will be vary based on your "tolerance". For one, the lens has no stabilization, meaning if your camera does not have in-body stabilization, you might see some jerkiness when shooting while moving. However, if you're using this with a gimbal/stabilizer, you should not have much trouble. Also, the effects of walking with a wide angle-of-view tends to be less severe. So depending on what you find acceptable, your results may vary. However, part from the issues with IS, this is an incredibly sharp MFT lens with a pretty solid aperture. It's also weather-resistant and a 240fps autofocus drive.

Q: 6. Is this an internal zoom?

A: the front element moves but does not extend and accepts filters perfectly

Q: 7. Is this rectilinear or fish eye?

A: It's rectilinear.

Q: 8. I notice that several owners of this lens have complained about it being decentered. Is this still an issue or were only copies effected?

A: Majority of our customers did not have any issue ( Over 99%)

Q: 9. Is the hood reversible for storage?

A: Yes the hood is reversible for storage.

Q: 10. What 67mm Variables ND filter works best with this lens, - no vignetting and ability to have lens hood on?

A: We are unable to test but feel that any 67mm Variable ND Filter will work such as: Tiffen 67mm Variable Neutral Density Filter B&H # TIVND67. the included lens hood attaches externally and does not screw into the filter threads.

I've been waiting for this lens for use on my Lumix GX7 and GX8. Since Olympus released their 7-14 f 2.8, I've been waiting for Panasonic to upgrade their 7-14 f4. Finally they did with this lens and it is worth the wait. It is a good looker as well as a good performer. I like the removable lens shade. The lens is VERY SHARP, corner to corner at both the 8 mm and the 18mm lengths. No distortion is noticeable when processed in Lightroom CC. A spectacular lens!!

Although bit on the expensive side, this lens is absolutely perfect with the GH5 for vlogging. The ability to attach filters this lens without special adapters sets it apart from other wide angle lenses in the micro43 line. Also, the ability to do focus pulls with the GH5 gives it great versatility. It covers a great range ending at 36mm full frame equivalent. It's light and solidly built. My only wish is that it had IS for video purposes.

I loved this wide angle lens. I have a 10-25mm as well, but it's very heavy, which prevents me from using it a lot, even though it has a wide and stable opening. I recommend both lenses, they perform well. The difference is the extra weight of 10-25 mm but it is better in low light

I bought the 8-18 to replace my Panasonic 7-14. The 7-14 is quite sharp and the appropriate size & weight for a m43 camera. But as others have pointed out, the 7-14 will sometimes show blue fringing which, on an Olympus body is not automatically removed and no, it is not easy to fix with Photoshop or Lightroom.

The 8-18 has far less chromatic aberration and although it's larger than the 7-14, it's still quite light, unlike the massive Olympus 7-14. I don't have any use for filters on a lens this wide but it's nice to have the option and be able to protect the front element. One suggestion I would make is to test your copy. These lenses aren't made by Leica or in Germany and they are obviously very complex. The first one I had was very good, but one corner was just slighty soft. The second was right on the money.

Beautifully made, beautifully executed. It produces excellent results. It's a shame to have a variable aperture, but I understand it as a reasonable compromise between size and quality. It is a really useful focal range.

If this were full frame, the price and size would be at least two times what we see here.

It's expensive but it's really worth it.

I just purchased this recently. The chats that I had with B&H tech people helped me in the selection of this lense. At first, I was going to purchase the 7-14mm version but changed my mind after I saw that a special adapter needed to be purchased to protect the lense. Then I saw the 8-18mm version(about $150 more) but worth it, since the lense protect system is the normal 67mm screw on to the lense. No special adapter needed. The viewing angle difference is -7 degree was not a problem. I have tested this lense and it works. This is now my main lense on the DMC-G85 along with the B&W uv master filter on the front of the lense for protection.

This is a near perfect landscape lens. It's size and weight make it comfortable and easy to use on my Olympus E-M1.2. A major reason this lens was purchased over other super wide MFT lenses is the ability to take my Lee Seven 5 series filters using the standard 67mm adapter ring Also, it has excellent sharpness and color fidelity. If you use filters for your landscape work, it is an excellent choice.

I had concerns going in since I was use to the Olympus Pro lens and debated getting another Olympus lens. But after a few weeks of use the lens has worked great and was $200 cheaper than the Olympus. Use this lens 90% of time now specifically for vlogging and landscape shots.

I've had my GX8 for a year and thought I needed more wide angle coverage. Yes, they had a 7-14, but rumor had it a Pan/Leica 8-18 would be coming soon. Glad I waited, this lens has the quality I've come to expect. The images are from the Breakers in Newport, R.I., and are my first shots with this lens.
