This 3-stop, 55mm Heliopan ND Filter provides a 3-stop exposure reduction. Its 0.9 optical density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed without overexposing your image. By slowing your exposure time, you can create motion blur for special effects or to convey a sense of movement. Opening your iris allows you to create shallow depth of field, which can help isolate your subject. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes four layers of anti-reflection coating. Together, these eight coatings offer greater protection to the filter substrate and help it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters.

This Heliopan neutral density filter is constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity and features a brass filter ring for enhanced durability and jamming prevention.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What are the meaning of the numbers from 1 to 12 on the filter? Can I use it to adjust an exact ND stop like ND8 or ND16?

A: The 1-12 scale is a half-stop scale that allows you to more precisely set the filter to 0.3 (1-stop) through 1.8 (6 stop) increments, as well as halfway in between any of those stops. It is not exactly related to ND8 or ND16 stops as those would be 0.9 (3-stops) and 1.2 (4-stops), though you could use this 1-12 scale to set those at numbers 6 and 8.

Q: 2. does the filter have front threads as to add a lens cap?

A: The Heliopan 52mm ND 3.0 has 52mm front-filter threads for other filters or a lens cap.

Q: 3. Can this filter be safely used as a solar filter to film the upcoming solar eclipse?

A: What if one uses live view?

Q: 4. Are their both inside and outside threads on this filter so that it can be included anywhere in a stack?

A: I note it is threaded on both sides.

Q: 5. does this affect colors in any way? does it desaturate colors as those cheaper ND filters?

A: No, this filter does not affect coloration of the image.

Q: 6. What's the diameter of the lens cap to buy for the Heliopan 46mm variable ND filter? Trying not to remove the filter each time the camera is kept in the bag, thus a lens cap would be useful.

A: The filter can only be used with a push on lens cap. There are none that are specific for that filter. This one is very close but can at times slip off.

Q: 7. I was gnderin what is the function of two screws that are on the filter? I've realized the range was limited and I thought something was off. Then I unscrewed them and having the ability to turn the top glass 360 degrees, now I have full range of Nd, and it saved my life. I figured the glasses are not detachable. So, now I am confused about the function of those screws. They put hard stops for sure but those hard stops were limiting the actual range of the filter. Either mine was a faulty one, or there is something else.

A: The installed screw along the filter ring are prevent the filter from being adjusted past the highest density, which would cause an X shaped pattern to appear in your frame.

Q: 8. sirve para un lente de 85 mm?

A: distancia focal o tamao de hilo?

Q: 9. Will this work with Leica Q3?

I bought this ND variable filter to use with my Sony NEX FS100 HD camera and Canon 16-35mm f2.8 L lens. It's expensive, but one of the only filters that does not produce any color shifting or distortion. Well worth the price.

If you like to shoot wide open in the daylight, or slow your exposure for those dreamy water shots, this kind of filter is for you. It is finely constructed and easy to use though a little on the pricey side. To justify cost you can buy a larger filter and some step-down rings so that you can use it on multiple lenses if your lens sizes vary. This is an excellent piece of kit.

I use this on a Leica M, so having the numerical index is a big plus, as the effect isn't seen, just metered. Very well made and smooth rotation with just the right amount of resistance. Seems to have no negative effects optically. I find Heliopan filters, although rather expensive, to be the best. I guess you get what you pay for.

I know they're expensive and yes, there are cheaper brands out there that offer great glass. But Heliopan offers a product that is of the highest quality. My only complaint is that there is no space in front for a lens cap. But I just take it off and pack it in the case they provide for it.
