Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I bought one - when you turn the ring(s), the entire barrel spins so the whole frame rotates and throws off all the readings. Is this normal??

A: As I used this device for years, I should be of assistance. With the top, narrow ring, select the aspect ratio you are shooting in. Hold the viewfinder to your eye and rotate the lower, fatter ring to obtain the frame you wish. Then look at the scales on the outside of the barrel to ascertain the lens mm for the camera. For the highest accuracy possible, I suggest giving this to your camera assistant and have them test it for accuracy. They can make new index marks that match your camera and lenses if necessary.

Q: 2. Does it have any adjustments for people who wear glasses?

A: On the rear is a eyepiece focusing ring that adjusts for most every eye even those with glasses.

Q: 3. Does it cover FF?

A: Yes, the Alan Gordon Enterprises Mark Vb Director's Viewfinder has an option to cover 35mm (18-200mm).

Q: 4. Does it have a mode for 2perf framing?

A: No, the directors viewfinder offers the following formats. 16mm film: 8.5-100mm S16mm: 10.5-125mm 35mm: 18-200mm 35mm Anamorphic: 35-420mm 1/2" Video: 6.5-80mm 2/3" Video: 8.5-75mm 1" Video: 10.5-125mm

Q: 5. Can the internal foam be adjust so that it compensates for the natural slope of the shoulder?

A: The Alan Gordon Enterprises Camera Comfort Cushion does have a zipper that could allow you to modify the foam. But the foam part of the cushion is what your camera sits on. After several uses, the inserts mold to the operator’s shoulder making it a perfect fit. Depending on personal comfort, each Cushion comes with a variety of inserts, which fit inside a zipper pocket. See image for how it works: https://bit.ly/47s4MMg

Q: 6. Would this work for a bmpcc 4k? So I could do framing and see how various lenses would look? Both speed boosted lenses and native mft lenses.

A: The supported formats are as follows: 16mm film: 8.5-100mm; S16mm: 10.5-125mm; 35mm: 18-200mm 35mm Anamorphic: 35-420mm; 1/2" Video: 6.5-80mm; 2/3" Video: 8.5-75mm; 1" Video: 10.5-125mm -- The BMPCC 4k is virtually the same as a S16mm, thus you should be well covered.

Q: 7. Can I use this Viewfinder with the Sony F5 or Canon 300?

A: The Alan Gordon Enterprises Mark Vb Director's Viewfinder (B&H# ALDVFM5B) does not fit onto a camera but rather is used as a standalone viewfinder. As such, it may be used while filming with any camera including the Sony PMW-F5 CineAlta Digital Cinema Camera (B&H# SOPMWF5) or Canon EOS C300 Mark III Digital Cinema Camera Body (EF Lens Mount) (B&H #CAC3003EF) in order to get an idea of the framing of the image in 16mm, 35mm, and other sizes of film or sensor formats.

Q: 8. Will smallhd focus 7 be too small for this pouch?

A: No, it should be fine.

Q: 9. Does this replicate the lens compression of the chosen focal length?

A: Formats16mm film: 8.5-100mmS16mm: 10.5-125mm35mm: 18-200mm35mm Anamorphic: 35-420mm1/2 Video: 6.5-80mm2/3 Video: 8.5-75mm1 Video: 10.5-125mm

After reading many reviews about other slates, I hesitated about this one also. However, the slate remains solid. I have no problems with erasing what I wrote. It is sturdy, thick and it has a good claping sound. (no pun intended) lol. It's going to be with me for a looooong time. It seems pricey, but it's going to last.

The price is good, the size is great. Better than this, only an electronic slate.

Just got done using my new slate clapboard on a shoot and I'm very satisfied with it. The construction is quite good and it makes a loud clap aided by two magnets. I would highly recommend this clapper if you want one that is well-made and seems like it would last for years. The only problem I had was that the gal who was doing the clapping was short and had to hold the clapboard over her head at times so the camcorder could see it. I hardly feel this was the fault of the manufacturer. ;-) Great product.

I use this slate only for syncing multiple camera setups. I have to say that when I got the slate I was very impressed with the quality. The words on the slate are Engraved, so they stick up slightly from the whiteboard and it looks very professional. Also, the clapboard itself is relatively well put together. It is a little flimsy in that it tends to slide from side to side a little bit too much for me to call it solid. It isn't enough for me to warrant sending it back, but it sways enough to notice. The other good thing is that the back of the slate is also a whiteboard. This came in particularly handy when you are doing a scripted sitdown interview and the person has trouble remembering their lines and what they are supposed to say. I had a shoot like that and in order to deal with it, I flipped the slate over and scripted an outline out on the spot... Held it in front of the camera and VIOLA... worked like a charm... Plus the quick thinking impressed the people we were doing the video for, so that never hurts either. Overall, for the price, I would say this is a steal of a deal and you would certainly enjoy having this. Not only does it look professional, but the quality seems like it will last for years.

Nothing fancy. No electronics. Does the job. Produces a nice loud clap. I prefer this to the new electronic versions.

The hinge is solid and well built and the board itself is very well designed. Used for the first last during the scifi film shootout here in Roswell and after so many claps from newbie 2nd ACs that don't respect other people's equipment its still going strong.
