With a large aperture for maximum light-gathering ability to allow its use in even the most challenging conditions, Swarovski Optik designed their STR-80 HD 80mm Spotting Scope as an indispensable companion in a blind or stand, or at the range. This version of the scope is outfitted with a modified duplex ranging reticle with 1/4 MOA indicators and stadia to assist in range and target size estimation as well as ballistic drop compensation for long-distance shots. Running on one CR123 battery with an exceptionally long runtime, the reticle is illuminated in red with 15 intensities: 10 for daytime use and 5 for nighttime. The reticle, set on the first focal plane, retains its subtension accuracy at any magnification and can be completely removed from view to allow the scope to be used as a conventional spotter.

Optically the STR-80 performs up to Swarovski's high standards and expectations with extra-low dispersion fluoride glass elements that efficiently transmit all wavelengths of visible light, resulting in bright images that are color faithful, crisp, and rich with detail. SWARODUR and SWAROTOP coatings on all lenses and prisms minimize glare while maximizing contrast. The large aperture draws in copious amounts of light, allowing it to be used in the pre-dawn and dusk/twilight hours when animals are most active. This iteration is offered here without an eyepiece for those users who wish to choose one or both of the optional 25-50x wide-angle or 20-60x zoom eyepieces. To make acquiring subjects easy and tracking targets faster, the eyepiece is set in-line with the optical tube for straight-through viewing.

The aluminum-alloy chassis is wrapped in a rubber armor that protects it from bumps and impacts, while offering a slip-resistant grip for sure handling during setup and breakdown. A rotating tripod collar is equipped with both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads to be compatible with most photo, video, and field tripods and other support systems. Its optical tube is nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be to be dustproof, waterproof/submersible to 13', and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature changes or environmental conditions.

First saw this scope in Yellowstone where another user was digiscoping a buck in near darkness. The image through the scope was amazingly bright and clear. Purchased my own and I am continually amazed and pleased with the clarity of the images.

I am very pleased with the quality of this scope. Excellent clarity! I am also pleased with the ease of use. The 20X60 eyepiece makes finding things a breeze. I am pleased that I got the angled scope in that it can easily be used by persons of different heights without resetting it... and I seldom do birding alone. I was a bit disappointed however to find that I can't easily turn the eyepiece from side to side with the cover on. I may use the cover less often than I had hoped.

A great tool for reaching out to see birds beyond the effective range of binoculars. A very high quality scope with great ergonomic design and stylish appearance; a large, easy to use focus wheel on the body, with more sensitivity than I originally expected; excellent sharpness and color rendition; good eye relief with extendable bumper; a nice pull-out sun shade. Nice with the 20-60X zoom eyepiece because you can scan the target area with the low power, and then zoom to the high power when you find your subject, in my case birds. I use it near my home at Sandy Hook where many birds are out on open water and sometimes hard to identify even with good binoculars. This baby really pulls them in close and clear! You really need a sturdy tripod though to avoid shake at the high magnification this scope delivers (I use a Manfrotto 055MF3 with a 701RC2 head). I also highly recommend the cordura protective case, which really fits like a glove, has a handy, well-balanced carry strap, and easy on-off lens covers--extra insurance to help protect this expensive piece of glass in the field, although the scope itself is solid, well designed and supposedly waterproof--although I don't intend to push that feature, except maybe occasionally in fog, drizzle or light rain--nice to know it can take it without ill effect.

The scope and 20-60 eyepiece are awesome tools for birding and similar. Super-sharp images edge to edge, great low-light performance, extremely solid yet weight is reasonable. The 101 tripod seems fine, although I'm not impressed with the 101 fluid head. But the package with tripod and head costs very little more than the scope plus zoom eyepiece.

I have to the chance to view several high end brands of spotting scopes at the same time and at same target which was several lines of type at different sizes. The different was very clear to me then on the quality of this scope over the others. Down side is it is on the high end of the price tag.
