Record music, edit video, or work with files while staying mobile using the StudioRAID mini 8TB 2-Bay USB 3.0 RAID Array (2 x 4TB HDD) from Glyph Technologies. Pre-configured as HFS+ for Mac but also compatible with Windows via a simple reformat, this array connects to your system using its one micro-USB 3.0 port, two FireWire 800 ports, or one eSATA port with data transfer speeds up to 250 MB/s. The StudioRAID mini is equipped with two 2.5" SATA drive bays and a total capacity of 8TB, which is configured as 2 x 4TB 5400 rpm hard drives.

To help facilitate its functionality within a production environment, the StudioRAID comes pre-configured as a RAID 0, which helps enhance performance by spreading data across two drives and is also compatible with RAID 1, which offers data redundancy. Cooling is accomplished using a temperature-controlled quiet fan and while this RAID array is bus-powered via its FireWire 800 port, an international AC adapter, compatible with US, UK, and EU power sockets, is included. Also included is a USB 3.0 cable and a FireWire cable. The StudioRAID mini is protected by hardware, data recovery, and overnight replacement warranties.

The StudioRAID mini supports RAID 0 and RAID 1 modes using a hardware controller that can be configured using a switch on the back of the array, as well as fast transfer rates over USB 3.0, FireWire 800, and eSATA. It is bus-power-capable so you can work almost anywhere and with intelligent fan cooling and automatic health monitoring, you'll spend more time creating and less time worrying.

RAID 0 is an operating mode designed for fast transfer rates by striping the data across two drives, while RAID 1 is used for redundancy, as it instantly and automatically mirrors your data

With transfer speeds up to 250 MB/s, the StudioRAID mini offers USB 3.0 performance. This means faster editing, quick rendering, more tracks, more samples, and a more efficient workflow

Custom sensors monitor the health of your StudioRAID mini, warning you of activity patterns that indicate potential problems with your drive. An LED on the front panel will display solid blue when power is on and flash blue when there is disk activity. The LED will flash or display a solid red color when error conditions exits with the drive or enclosure. Any error that results in the system state "Halted" generates a solid red LED on the front panel of the drive. All other errors result in the blinking red LED.

The StudioRAID mini uses a temperature-controlled quiet fan for maximum airflow and proper cooling. The enclosure has been designed with front-panel ventilation to draw cool air in, while exhausting warm air out the back. This helps to ensure the performance and reliability of critical components

Qualified with Final Cut Pro, Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere, and major audio production packages that support FireWire storage, including Digidesign Pro Tools, Steinberg Nuendo and Cubase, Apple Logic, MOTU Digital Performer, Cakewalk Sonar, Sony Vegas, and more.

The StudioRAID mini comes ready for use with Mac so you can plug in and begin storing your files immediately. It's also Time Machine compatible and can be used to back up your files. If you're a Windows user, a simple reformat will configure your StudioRAID mini for use with a PC

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Should this work pretty well with a mac that has thunderbolt 3 ports? Should it be fast?

A: Yes, this Glyph Technologies StudioRAID will work fast with a Thunderbolt 2 Mac. You will need the Apple Thunderbolt Cable (ex: BH #APMD862LLA) and the Apple Thunderbolt 3 Male to Thunderbolt 2 Female Adapter BH #APMMEL2AMA.

Q: 2. Is there a way to use this as a sing unit as a 8TB drive (with no redundancy)?

A: Yes, the Glyph Technologies StudioRAID can be used in RAID0 mode to have full access to the 8TB capacity. The unit comes preconfigured this way.

Q: 3. Is the actual capacity of the 8tb unit 4tb if you are actually using raid?

A: Mike, My experience with B & H was distinctly unhelpful. (And I have bought a lot of stuff from B & H). But when I needed B & H to exhibit the simplest measure of consideration, it refused. Consequently, I cannot encourage anyone to purchase anything from B & H. By contrast, my experience with customer service/tech support at Glyph Technologies was beyond outstanding. I suggest that you email Glyph and, if needed, set up a phone call. These folks are serious and follow through. Good luck.-- Daniel

Q: 4. hard disk

A: It comes with the hard drives included.

Q: 5. Does this drive require reformatting for Windows? I'm using Win10.

A: The drive is preformatted for Mac so reformatting is required for Windows.

Q: 6. how do you change the raid setup?

A: There's a switch on the back to change from RAID 0 and 1. Mine came in RAID 1 and I didn't want to change it to RAID 0, but my guess is the change isn't too complicated, especially when the drive is empty.

Q: 7. Are the drives removable? (I want to mirror the drives and have a third copy in the safe as an archive.)

A: Not without completely disassembling the box. I would recommend and hot swap HD caddy like New Technology Voyager and mirroring software like Synchron.

Q: 8. Can the user remove and replace the individual drives?

A: Yes, the user can remove and replace the individual drives.

Q: 9. This is 8TB in what configuration?

A: 8TB is RAID 0 mode.

Q: 10. Are the drives swappable in this array?

A: Not from what I can tell

I bought this drive to accompany me on 2 video projects that were out of state. The size was absolutely perfect for my carry on luggage and having a raid 0 option as well as USB 3 made this drive a winner. (see attached photo for size comparison with other glyph drives) I'll be purchasing more of these for the next travel gig.

I am a sound design and film student in Savannah. I am also a professional DJ, songwriter, and music producer. I have used GLYPH drives in professional studios before and with just cause. So when I came to do sound and film, I knew what I would choose to rely on for storing my files and footage. I run two 2TB Studio Mini hard drives and this StudioRaid Mini 4TB. I use one drive for portable transport of files and data. The second as a stored backup, and the StudioRAID Mini 4TB for sound and film projects at my desk due to drive usage and space. GLYPH drives are extremely reliable and the warranty is amazing. The drives backup internally in order to assure none of your data is lost and can be restored by the GLYPH staff. I love GLYPH drives due to their constant reliability, integrated cooling system, and the integrated backup system. These drives are the best and most of the audio professionals I work with swear by GLYPH, as do I. And the drives run USB 3.0 for ultra-fast connectivity, with e-Sata and Firewire 800 ports for expanded connectivity.

You pay a premium for the small size, but it takes up so little desk real estate, and it's a great RAID 1 system for keeping my photos safely backed up. I use Windows (rather than Mac), but a quick call to Glyph's tech support folks was fabulous--he walked me thru the steps to format the drive(s) for Windows, and I was up and running in a couple minutes (NEVER would have figured it out myself from the less than impressive online product manual)
