Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Does this come with a bag or case?
A: No it does not include a case. In the Box: Microphone Madness MM-MSLM Omnidirectional MatchStick Lapel Microphone (Black) Windscreen Limited 1-Year Warranty Suggestion: Pelican 1010 Micro Case (Clear Yellow with Colored Lining) B&H # PE1010MCCY - https://bhpho.to/2FCYS0T
Q: 2. Will this work with a portable audio recorder like the Zoom H4N or the Tascam dr-40 (I think it'd need a 1/4 adapter for that one)?
A: I use it with a Zoom H4N and it works very nicely. I did not need an adapter for it.
Q: 3. would these work for a wireless system? for example, the new Rode Wireless Go system or Sennheiser XSW kits? do transmitters typically provide the plug in power needed for these lavs?
A: This will work with the Rode Go systems very well, I've used them together in the past and overall had a good experience. However it does not work with Sennheiser wireless system since they have a proprietary locking pin, so when buying lavs for Sennheiser systems it either needs to be made buy Sennheiser or for Sennheiser.
Q: 4. I'm wondering if I bend it to be used on the other ear if the microphone will break? It's currently set up for the left ear.
A: The boom on the Polsen ESM-1-35H Single-Sided Earset Microphone is flexible and adjustable, so it should not break if you bend it to curve for use on the right ear.
Q: 5. Are there certain settings you'd use this mic with the zoom H1, for a wedding?
A: I've used .wav format, 48khz 24 bit, lo cut off, and auto level off settings with a Zoom H1 with this mic to record wedding ceremonies and had good success. You'll have to play with the input level because each shooting scenario will vary but I always normalize in post with Adobe Audition anyway. Keep in mind this mic will only record the voice of the person it's attached to.
Q: 6. Looking at this, the Countyman B6 and the Sanken COS-11D for a documentary I'm doing for a hospital in a small African country this summer. I know the B6 and 11D are highly regarded, but given the $ and my need for 2-3 mics while paying for them out-of-pocket, I want to find the best bang-for-buck without sacrificing a lot in sound quality. My big question before trying it is, how is the self-noise and handling-noise on this unit? Thx in advance.
A: The Microphone Madness MM-MSLM is an excellent microphone for the money, relatively quiet, and not too bad on the handling noise. You may want to pick up some hush lav quieting sleeves (used with the sanken lavs) to better isolate the microphone from rustling noise. Also, please not the microphone requires power via bias voltage; 1 to 9 VDC.
Q: 7. Does this version have the locking (screw-on) 3.5mm jack? Such as for a Sennheiser G3, or DR-10L?
A: No, this microphone has a non-locking 3.5mm TRS connector for use with a recorder, camera or a device with a standard mic input. We do offer the omnidirectional Microphone Madness Lavalier Mic for Select Sennheiser Systems in black (B&H # MIPSMLSRBL) or beige (B&H # MIPSMLSRBE) as a special order item. We do have a selection of other mics that are compatible with Sennheiser transmitters and the DR-10L. Please feel free to contact us through live chat or by phone if you would like further assistance. You can reach us by phone at 800-606-6969 or 212-444-6615.
Q: 8. I use a Microphone Madness MM-MSLM Omnidirectional MatchStick Lapel Microphone (Black) with the Zoom H1N. Are there any adapters that I should have between the two or can the mic just plug into the recorder?
A: You don't need any adapters. It's a 3.5mm mic in on the H1 and a 3.5mm on the lav's connector. All you have to do is plug it in.
Q: 9. Dumb question, would this work if I plugged this into an average aux port?
A: Whether you are referencing an Aux In port or an Aux Out port it will not work because mic signal is much lowerl than line level signal like from a headphone output for example. Because of that, the ESM-1-MN would only be compatible with a microphone input.
Q: 10. Could this be used with a Rode VXLR+ 3.5mm TRS female to XLR male adapter with phantom power converter to use it as a wired mic?
A: Yes, the Polsen ESM-1-35H Single-Sided Earset Microphone for Sennheiser Transmitters (B&H # POESM135H) can be used with the RODE VXLR+ 3.5mm TRS Female to XLR Male Adapter with Phantom Power Converter (B&H # ROVXLRP) in order to connect it to a wired XLR microphone input. As another option, you could use the similar Polsen ESM-1-MN Single-Sided Earset Microphone for Recorders and Wireless Transmitters (B&H # POESM1MN) for connection to a standard 3.5mm TRS mic input with plug-in power. Either version of the earset mic can be used with the VXLR+ adapter for connection to an XLR mic input. The difference between the two models is that the version for Sennheiser transmitters has a locking 3.5mm connector and the version for recorders has a standard non-locking 3.5mm connector.
