The WD My Book Duo 16TB USB 3.0 RAID Array features two 3.5" drive bays that each sport a 8TB hard drive to provide a total capacity of 16TB for USB Type-C and USB Type-A systems. The two included hard drives are WD Red drives designed for high-performance and reliability. WD has configured the drives in RAID 0 and lets you reconfigure them in RAID 1 or JBOD, using the included WD Drive Utilities software program. The My Book Duo comes with a USB 3.0 Type-C port, plus a USB 3.0 Type-C to Type-C cable and a USB 3.0 Type-C to Type-A cable. With RAID 0 and USB 3.0 technology, the My Book Duo delivers sequential read speeds of up to 360 MB/s.

Other notable features include a 2-port USB 3.0 Type-A hub, which expands the host system's connections, and AES hardware encryption that helps prevent unauthorized access to sensitive data. In addition, the My Book Duo is pre-formatted in NTFS for Windows systems and requires a reformat for use with Mac.

The My Book Duo drive provides 16TB of storage capacity with a single connection. This amount of digital storage space lets you hold and back up your photos, videos, documents, and songs.

The My Book Duo is preconfigured in a RAID 0 array that grants maximum speed and capacity. Utilizing the included WD Drive Utilities software, you can reconfigure the drives in a RAID 1 for redundancy or JBOD array as two independent drives.

Two WD Red drives are included to provide high-speed and reliable storage. To help ensure read/write cycle data integrity, RAID-optimized firmware is suitable for a two-disk array system with auto management of drive operations.

With the included USB Type-C to Type-C and USB Type-C to Type-A cables, the My Book Duo supports a wide-variety of systems.

The My Book Duo drive can serve as a quasi-docking station with two USB 3.0 Type-A ports designed for accessories, such as an additional storage device, keyboard and mouse set, card reader, and mobile devices.

The My Book Duo drive comes with 256-bit AES hardware encryption with WD Security software built in to help keep private content secure. You can set a personalized password to activate hardware encryption and data protection.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can the hard drives be removed and used separately? I currently have this system, but I'd like to switch to a NAS and use these hard drives with it.

A: You can remove these drives and put them in another system that accepts 3.5" SATA drives. Please note that by doing so you may also be erasing whatever data that's already stored on the drives.

Q: 2. can i edit 4k raw dng straight of the drive?

A: RAW files are very large and intensive to deal with when editing. While this is a great product, it is only rated at USB 3.0, not USB 3.1, for speed. A G-Raid with Thunderbolt 3/USB 3.1 speeds would be a better choice, B&H # GT0G05753, while an option like the Glyph Technologies Atom RAID which uses Solid State Drives would be an even better choice, B&H # GLAR2000GR.https://bhpho.to/2rm2m3dhttps://bhpho.to/2rlzO9U

Q: 3. Will this work with an Xbox? That's my main question.

A: You can not play games stored on a NAS.

Q: 4. I am understanding that if a drive fails one has to buy a new one from WD due to their encryption are these drives available and how much are they so one cannot just by another seagate red drive and. put it in ?

A: The drives are replaced by WD within the Limited 3-Year Warranty. Otherwise, you can use any RAID compatible drive that is 5400 RPM.

Q: 5. If running with RAID 1, if one disk fails is data easily accessed from other disk?

A: I haven't encountered this. I believe you remove the failed drive, insert a new drive then the software repopulates the new drive.

Q: 6. Can I connect a USB 3.0 Type C cable into my 2.0 port on my CPU?

A: Yes, it is compatible and the cable is included in the box.

Q: 7. Can this be daisy chained to another WD drive?

A: This drive does not support daisy chaining.

Q: 8. Can you use the red pro drives in this?

A: I'm afraid I don't know.

Q: 9. can i edit 4k raw dng straight of the drive?

A: Yes you can

Q: 10. I have 2x10TB RAID 0 on my WD book and its full now. I would like to replace another 2x10TB to continue using. Is it possible? if Yes. Will my first 2x10TB RAID drive lose any data once I plug back into enclosure?

A: If you remove both drives at the same time and put them back in at the same time, no data will be lost when you put them back inside the enclosure, however we do not recommend using an array this way.

Ive used these drives for many years starting back when they were just a couple TB and connected via firewire (imac).  Probably have like 6-7 of them total purchased over the course of years (latest is an 8 TB version running raid 1, mirrored).  Had 1 drive fail after several years (it was an old 2 TB version), and it was a bit of a pain, but found a replacement drive and then replicated (raid 1) and was back to normal.  All the other drives have been flawless and the software works great (Mac os 10).
Just remember, these are not the end-all-be-all, even in Raid 1... if you do raid 1 the drives are mirrored, but if you accidentally erase its erased off both drives, so it doesnt prevent user error or something happening to both drives in a worse case scenario.  If you have valuable date this is a great way to back up your files and keep them 99% protected, but always archive somewhere else as well!  The other person said if the housing goes bad you cant transfer to another housing because of encryption, so Im not knowledgable on that possible scenario/problem.

Not the fastest drive in the world but for the capacity the price is beyond good! Love having 20TB in a single enclosure! Thanks WD! Cant wait for 30TB or 40TB systems!

Easy to setup and format to Raid 1. I'm not a real technical person when it comes computers. The USB 3.0 lot faster than my USB 2.0, I was surprised how fast I backup my files.

I'm using this as a backup to my NAS. Smoothest installation I've ever experienced. It's been 2 weeks & it's working great so far.

You gotta RAID it through the WD utilities app. It took me a minute to figure that out but it's been working fine ever since.

Its a WD product so its trouble-free, plug-and-play.  16TB should satisfy our data storage needs for quite some time.  Its one of the those set it and forget it things.  It just works.

Transmits data directly from your current hard drive, without the old drive being connected to the PC. Works perfectly at full USB-3 speeds.
Total capacity is actually about 18 GB.
