Built for organizations looking to add 10GbE connectivity and virtualized storage to their network, the TeraStation 32TB 5810DN 8-Bay NAS Server from Buffalo is a high-performance scalable storage solution for businesses. It takes advantage of an iSCSI protocol designed to move data at enterprise-level speeds and helps to eliminate bottlenecks that can occur on slower networks. If you want to expand the storage capacity of your 5810DN, there are four empty drive bays.

The TeraStation 5810DN has an overall capacity of 32TB, which is made up of 4 x 8TB SATA III 3.5" NAS hard drives, and is further powered by a 1.7 GHz Annapurna Labs AL314 Alpine Quad-Core processor, 4GB of DDR3 ECC RAM, and Linux OS, allowing the 5810DN to run up to 100 concurrent sessions. Connectivity to your network is accomplished using one 10GbE port and two Gigabit Ethernet ports, and other compatible external peripherals can be connected to the 5810DN using its three USB 3.0/2.0 Type-A ports.

For those who require RAID support, this NAS supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10, each of which offers speed, redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is available. AES 256-bit encryption helps to ensure that data cannot be accessed on systems other than your TeraStation. Other features include Advanced NTFS Permissions (Windows ACL), VMware certification, RAID Mode Manager, Boot Authentication, Rsync, integrated cloud backup, Duplex Firmware, and Active Directory that supports up to 10,000 individual users, and more.

The TeraStation 5810DN is compatible with Windows, Windows Server, and Mac OS, and also supports the TCP/IP protocol and CIFS/SMB, AFP, FTP, SFTP, NFS, and SNMP network file services. Included with this NAS is NAS Navigator 2 software, NovaBACKUP Buffalo Edition software with 1 server and 10 workstation licenses, a network cable, an AC cable, and a front panel key. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty and 24-hour hard drive replacement.

The TeraStation 5810DN is equipped with an Annapurna Labs Alpine AL314 Quad-Core processor and can transfer of large files quickly with improved file access from multiple computers. Its performance is designed for demanding small, medium, and growing businesses.

With RAID 1 or RAID 5 (full redundancy), even if a drive fails, the TeraStation 5810DN will automatically power down the faulty drive to allow its safe removal and replacement.

Buffalo's TeraStation 5810DN comes with B-Sync, enabling users to seamlessly manage files and backups between their TeraStation and Dropbox. Buffalo NAS also works with Amazon S3 Cloud services.

If ever you need to replace a hard disk drive (HDD), prepayment is no longer necessary and if the order is placed before 12pm and in stock, shipment is dispatched the same day with a 24-hour delivery. This is valid for the duration of the limited 3-year warranty.

Works simultaneously as NAS and iSCSI target.

Replication is synchronizing a folder on two separate TeraStations in almost real time. It works in only one way - not bi-directional, from source to destination. It is possible to set-up the function in LAN and WAN. The WAN setup includes the remote connection using port forwarding and a VPN setup

The TeraStation 5810DN is bundled with 11 licenses of NovaBACKUP Buffalo Edition. NovaBACKUP provides a complete, all-in-one data protection solution for small and medium businesses serious about protecting digital assets.

Configured with three USB 3.0 Type-A ports for greater flexibility, users will be able to add an external hard drive or UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) to their NAS.

The TS5810DN is ready for intensive data storage tasks. Users can choose from multiple levels of RAID support (0/1/5/6/10/JBOD) for customized capacity and redundancy according to their specific needs.

Disk quota prevents disk space misuse by allocating users with the right amount of space.

Q: 8. Dot the drives in this device have different lots and dates of manufacture, so they don't die within days of each other?

A: It will really depend on when WD manufacturer's the unit. MTBF will differ based on usage. The more reading and writing you do, the closer you get to a drive failing. However, if used normally, even with constant read and write, you should hopefully get 3-5 years with no issues.

I purchased this DS923 after using my first Synology, a DS920 , several months ago. Both were purchased through B&h. I love having control of my backup storage versus using a cloud service that costs money and is considerably slower when dealing with large files. These NAS devices can do so much more than what I use it for but it’s nice to know I can expand on how I use it in the future.

I had minimal issues in setup and the process is fairly straightforward. The USB transfer speed is a step down from my older drive, but it was not a network drive and for the price, this is a reasonable compromise. The drives do make an odd moo sound as they spin down, but both behave identically and some internet research led me to accept this is normal behavior for these drives.

All

i cant write more than what has already been written about Synology and their products. DSM is user friendly, even for a NAS newbie like me. I got things up and running within 30 - 40 mins. Plug in the HDDs, insert the additional RAM (optional, i got extra b’coz … i always like some extra RAM), connect to the router, turn on power. There are pretty gradual instructions on how to set passwords, etc. just follow the instructions and it is pretty quick. Only thing is that I couldn’t get the 2FA to work … once you set the NTP, then that works too. I am still getting up to speed on DSM and everything it can do. I even plugged in a 650VA UPS and it was detected right away. Flawless operation.

Plug in the extra RAM correctly and apply some pressure so that it ‘clicks’ into place … else it wont detect the extra RAM. After you turn on, check the system monitor if the physical RAM has been detected correctly.

The physical products are also pretty easy to use and set up. If you get 3.5” HDDs (like i did) then you dont even need screwdrivers … just ‘finger and hands’ technology. When it is working, the noise is a gentle hum. I dont have it tucked away in the attic near the router … i use a mesh router and have a point close to my ‘office’ and have it there.

The product came a day ahead of time, so no complaints there. So far it is working flawlessly and i dont expect to see it work any other way.

This is my second nas unit. I bought this one to use as a DVR storage unit only. I install two WD 4T Red HDD's in this box. I set the HDD's up in Raid 1 configuration. My other Nas has WD Red's in them too for the last 7 years. The setup could not be any easier. you do it online at WD. using your box's ip address. This box has a transcoder for video resizing on output streaming to your playback devices.

Synology NAS devices are solid and configured correctly with m.2 cache drives and at least 7200 rpm NAS drives they run like a jet when used as a backup device or network share. You can even back them up to the Amazon's AWS backup cloud services.

All-in-one kit for a great starter NAS. Not entry-level - two-bays fit that price point better - this is ideal for a group, home, or small office with backup and data sharing needs. Lots of flexibility and options - great option in a crowded market. Biggest gotcha I've seen is lack of hardware transcoding in the CPU.

Synology is a very versatile server. It can act not just as a NAS, but as a Media Center, DNS server, DHCP server, FTP server, e-mail server, and so on, and so on.

I am very pleased with its performance so far.
