Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the output file? Is there an option for raw output

A: Yes you can scan to a DNG file which is a raw file. The scanner comes with SilverFast scanning software that allows you to save a file to different file formats. DNG is a raw format that can be imported into LightRoom or PhotoShop.

Q: 2. Is there a difference between this and flatbed scanners?

A: Both a film scanner and flatbed scanner operate using a light source and sensors that scan through the transparency. A dedicated film scanner utilizes a transmissive light source while a flatbed scanner uses a reflective light source. The result is greater density and clarity scanned from the transmissive light from a film scanner. Current higher quality flatbed scanners offer transparency and negative holders and often include an additional light source on the lid to mimic the transmissive light.

Q: 3. How can customers discriminate between the old very slow scanner and the new updated 2024 version scanner? Same Mfr#, Same B&H# !!!

A: We only sell the current version of the Plustek OpticFilm 120 Film Scanner. The part number on this version is OF120, while the prior model had a 12-digit part number.

Q: 4. Will this fit the Plustek OpticFilm 7400?

A: Yes, the Plustek 35mm Film Strip Holder will fit with the Plustek OpticFilm 7400 Scanner.

Q: 5. Can this be used to scan panoramic photos? And is it possible to include the film sprocket holes in the scan?

A: You can scan 35mm panoramic film using the Plustek 35mm Negative Film Holder for OpticFilm 120. However, you will not be able to include the film sprocket holes in the scan.

Q: 6. Are you able to utilize a manual focus option incase the slide is bent or damaged and the autofocus isn't working?

A: There is no manual focusing option on this scanner. The lens is fixed.

Q: 7. What improvements changed between the original version and this new release?

A: According to the manufacturer, compared to the original version, the new Plustek OpticFilm 120 Film Scanner has an entirely new sensor and upgraded, higher-quality circuitry when compared to its predecessor. Plustek has a new manufacturing process with stricter quality control, and the scanner's calibration has been adjusted for better overall performance and image quality.

Q: 8. How does this compare to the Epson V850? I looking for a scanner for 6X7 negatives.

A: The image quality is better than that of the Epson, but the scanner is less versatile if you have other requirements (reflective scans, large format etc). For 135 and MF, it is excellent.

Q: 9. Hello,Does this product scan up to 12 35mm frames all at one time? I mean does it automaticly do 12 scans? Or is there a way to set it to scan 12 frames back to back?I have the 8200i and it is way to slow just scanning one at a time.

A: The OpticFilm 120 scanner has a motorized film transport for automatic batch scanning. Your options are:1) 35mm mounted slides (up to a max 5 slides) 2) 35mm filmstrips (up to a max of 12 frames) 3) 120/220 6x4.5 film strips (max. 4 frames) 4) 120/220 6x6 film strips (max. 3 frames) 5) 120/220 6x7 film strips (max. 3 frames) 6) 120/220 6x8/ 6x9 film strips (max. 2 frames) 7) 120/220 6x12 film strips (max. 1 frame)

Q: 10. How bad is this product? There are so many people complain about this scanner which is waste of money.

A: The software is its Achilles heel. Lack of lamp brightness and horrible frame selection hurts. Its sharper than Epson Flatbeds, but less colorful or dynamic as 120 size scans from Epson 4990 or V800. The holders are nice if film cut to 4 peices horz for plastic negative pages. Magnetic helps hold, but if film is short or too long the film can transport while being scanned. Software (possibly hardware) tends to crash a lot, too.

I have been using this scanner for about 6 months and have produced absolutely amazing scans from both color and B&W negatives. A few weeks ago something odd happened with the equipment so I contacted Plustek. Their support staff responded immediately, and resolved my issue with expediency and graciousness. It was obvious they really cared about me and wanted to assure me that they stood behind their product 100%. I could not recommend this scanner or the Plustek team more.

I got this after the Nikon Super CoolScan 9000 ED I was using gave up after years of service. I was expecting a far less capable product from this maker but since Nikon does not make the scanner anymore there was not a huge choice. It has turned out to be very good and better in some ways. The scan results are great and it is easy to use. A good bit smaller and quicker than the Nikon. It is a bit loud and clunky but is reliable and built well. I am very happy with it and highly recommend the scanner.

If you own the excellent OpticFilm 135i and are batch scanning myriad slides, a 2nd (or 3rd) holder is indispensable as you can reload 4 new slides while others are scanned - a huge time saver. Unlike many other holders, this is sturdy with a unique spring-loaded design to secure slides. A caveat: for old cardboard slides, be mindful while loading to prevent slide bending due to very tight springs. My tip: insert on the spring-loaded side and place the other thumb mid-slide while pushing in. Later plastic slides won't bend. Finally, as often out-of-stock, I advise getting two while available. Kudos to Plustek for the excellent holders!

I had my eye on this scanner for sometime, and when the price dropped $300 I went for it. The previous medium format scanner that I had was the Minolta Multiscan that has long been unsupported. I was happy with the results of the Minolta although fussy at times. The OpticFilm 120 comes with Silverfast software. With previous less that fun experiences with that expensive software, I chose to download Vuescan and not even install the Silverfast. Results were very gratifying from the start scanning 645 and 35mm transparencies. The scanning procedure was straightforward, and the results were very good with accurate color. Very little adjustment was required when I brought the images into Photoshop.

I bought this film scanner in order to scan some of the thousands of slides I have from years of traveling and photographing with a 35mm camera. I just set it up yesterday. It was easy to install and start using the scanner with my Mac mini. Overall, I am very satisfied with the ease of use and the quality of the scans. It does require time because there is nothing automated about the process.
