Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Do we need to have a computer for this to work ?

A: If you want to record, yes. If it for live broadcasting through an amp, the. I would imagine not.

Q: 2. What is the difference between MXL AC-404 and the MXL AC-404Z?

A: The mics themselves are identical. The Z is meant to be part of a Zoom conferencing system. The Z ships with mounting tape, a right angle USB cable and also sports a blue LED to match the Zoom color. The non Z does not sport an LED light. If you have a Zoom system, consider the Z version, otherwise the non Z is fine.

Q: 3. Can you use a longer cable than 6 foot? How long of a cable can be used before mic will not work?

A: The MXL AC-404 Portable USB Boundary Conferencing Microphone uses a USB 2.0 specification, which dictates a maximum length of 5 meters / 16 feet before failure.

Q: 4. Is there a software for recording music that works best with this microphone set up?

A: You can use GarageBand if you own a Mac. For a Windows PC: Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio 10 - Audio Editing/Production Software (Box) B&H # SOSFS10099EQ

Q: 5. Can you plug the AUX port into something like a Rode Wireless GO for a wireless setup?

A: Yes, the Aux output connection on the MXL AC-44 Miniature USB Conferencing Microphone could be used to feed the microphone signal into a wireless transmitter, however there are two caveats to this scenario. First, the microphone will still require a USB connection to function, and second, the output level of the Aux out is Line level, meaning it would likely overload transmitters such as the ones found in the Rode Wireless GO II System that are expecting Mic level signals. A workaround to this scenario could be found in an attenuator cable such as the Sescom LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N (BH #SEL2MZH4N), which would appropriately reduce the signal down to Mic level: https://bhpho.to/3azovCj

Q: 6. In the previous Q&A it was stated that the USB cord for this microphone was 10' long. We ordered three and all had 6' cables.

A: Our apologies. The cable is indeed about 6' long.

Q: 7. Is this compatible with a MacBook ?

A: Yes it is. As a side note also the shock mount that is included doesn't fit the mic that you order. It's weird I know.

Q: 8. Wondering how well this mic prevents plosives w/o a pop filter?

A: Not as well as some. You will probably want to use a pop filter.

Q: 9. is this suitable for a conference table application?

A: Yes, the AC-44 is ideal for use on a conference table to pickup audio during meetings and video conferences.

Q: 10. Can I daisy chain 2 or 3 of these together?

A: No. These are not designed to daisy chain.

We have been buying and using these for several years now, installing them in classrooms for lecture capture recordings. They work well, BUT as they are plug and play, a PC also thinks that the device is a speaker (the built-in headphone output). You will need to disable the playback choice on a PC.

So far this seems to be a good product. I have little experience with USB mics but this one seems to work well.

We use this microphone attached to a mac mini and high definition Samsung TV with a logitech camera. It works really well. Very easy to setup and has crisp audio.

This USB microphone lives up to the manufacturer's (MXL) hype. In fact, it's ability to cleanly and strongly pick up speech from more than 10 feet away in a classroom, at a level suitable for a live, remote captioner to hear, exceeded my best expectations. We initially tested it using various web-conferencing tools (Skype, Adobe Connect) and were immediately impressed with the warm sound and responsiveness. The input sensitivity is appropriately high so that it can be used in conferencing situations. We deployed this mic in the front of a 25-seat classroom with the hope that it would pick up student questions and comments at a level audible enough for a remote-captioner to hear and convey back to the hearing-impaired instructor. Much to everyone's relief and satisfaction, a soft-spoken student in the back of the room was clear and audible.
