A short telephoto prime distinguished by its close focusing and perspective control capabilities, the TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro from Canon is a tilt-shift lens well-suited for product and tabletop photography. Up to +/- 10° of tilt is possible, for focus control, and +/- 12mm of shift, to adjust perspective and composition, and a tilt-locking mechanism can be used while shooting for more stability. A minimum focus distance of 1.3' and a maximum magnification of 0.5x are also benefitted by the range of movements for more control over depth of field when photographing close-up subjects.

Complementing the operation of the lens, this L-series prime is also distinguished by its optical design, which features one Ultra-Low Dispersion element to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations as well as one aspherical element to minimize spherical aberrations and distortion. Individual elements also feature an Air Sphere Coating to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color neutrality.

Perspective control, tilt-shift lens affords +/- 12mm of shift and +/- 10° of tilt, and both types of movements can be applied independently, and parallel or perpendicular to one another. Additionally, the tilt and shift functions can be rotated +/- 90° in any direction for applying the movements in distinct directions.

Tilt-locking mechanism and a large tilt knob benefit operation and ensure the lens stays in place while shooting.

One ultra-low dispersion element helps to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.

One aspherical element minimizes spherical aberrations and distortion for improved sharpness.

An Air Sphere Coating has been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.

A minimum focusing distance of 1.3' along with a maximum magnification of 0.5x benefits working with close-up subjects.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field techniques.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What effect on performance would using this on an R5 w/ EF adaptor have, given that it will be further from the sensor?

A: The Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens will work perfectly on the Canon R5 with the adapter. There won't be any effect in the performance.

Q: 2. I'm assuming that with the EF 25 extension, this lens will produce 1:1?

A: Yes, if you use the Canon EF 25 II Extension Tube with the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens, the lens would become a 1x macro lens with a 1:1 reproduction ration and a minimum focus distance of approximately 7.9 inches. However, do note that you will lose infinity focus when using the Canon EF 25 II Extension Tube on the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens.

Q: 3. What is the best lens for product photography?

A: This is a superb lens for product photography. I am a professional product photographer. I have used many lenses, and still do for certain things, but this my go-to lens for nearly everything. It is extremely sharp, and the tilt-shift feature is essential for placing the plane of focus right where you need it. With an extension tube it becomes a great TS macro lens, too. I give it five stars!

Q: 4. One of the reviewers mentioned the Fotodiox Wonderpana Freearc system to protect the front lens of the TS-E 17mm. I like that idea, but which one?

A: I have used the TS-E 17 for a couple of years. Absolutely love this lens. I however don't want to put anything between my great UD L series glass and the subject. I will admit that I was concerned about the protruding front element at first. However the concerns have faded with use. I usually have the lens cap in place unless I'm taking a shot, but have trekked about in major cities like Chicago and D.C. with the lens ready to go. I do recommend that you cary a good cleaning kit in your bag, and as with all optics keep 'em clean. This lens is absolutely awesome - go shoot and get comfortable with working with such an outstanding piece of glass!

Q: 5. Is it necessary to always use a tripod with this lens, even when not using using the T/S?

A: Its a heavy lens but no worse than a telephoto. You should be fine if you follow the rule of keeping your shutter speed equal to or higher than the focal length of the lensWhen handholding.

Q: 6. is the 17mm canon lens compatible with a Nikon d600 full frame body? thanks

A: The Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens is not compatible with Nikon cameras, so you would not be able to use it on the D600.

Q: 7. When using an adapter for R mirrorless cameras do the lenses work the same as with a DSLR camera in terms of sharpness, lens movements and metering?

A: If you purchase the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R for use with the Canon TS-E 50mm f/2.8L Macro Tilt-Shift Lens, the lens will have the same performance as when used on a DSLR camera, including sharpness, lens movements, and exposure metering.

Q: 8. i really want to get TS lens , which one should i get - 50 , 90 or 135 ? i want to do portraits , some small things , like watches, snowballs.i just want to get the one that covers the most , because i can not afford two , or all of them

A: If your camera has the full frame sensor, given the description of the photographs you intend to take, I would recommend the 90mm. For crop sensor, the 50mm.

Q: 9. Is it possible to order this lens so that the shift and tilt mechanisms are parallel, rather than perpendicular, to one another? I understand that this modification normally requires sending it to a Canon service center after initial purchase, which seems needlessly complicated (unless one is willing to undergo the risk of doing it yourself).

A: As Canon only manufactures one version of this lens with one manufacturer number, if you need the lens modified, you would have to contact Canon directly for assistance with your inquiry, as the lens is only offered to dealers and retailers in the standard configuration as described in the lens' instruction manual. You would have to contact Canon at 1-800-652-2666 or carecenter@cits.canon.com for assistance with your inquiry.

Q: 10. For Portrait vs Landscape photos, do I need to use the Rotation function to 90 degrees (+- depending on left/right camera rotation)?

A: No, one does not adjust the mount rotation: +/- 90° on the Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens based on shooting orientation. Rotation of the tilt-shift mechanism should be done based on what is needed for the specific composition. This is independent of camera orientation.

This is a great lens when shooting close ups at an angle using full sensor DSLRs and mirrorless cameras where the focus range is paper thin. The lens allows you keep everything in focus, top to bottom, regardless of the angle you're shooting from. Don't need it a lot, but when I need it, I need it! Last time I used this was when shooting video looking down on a container that contained bedbugs and a small section of mattress material. It's too hard to look straight down at 90 degrees sometimes, so this lens come in very handle for macro type stuff and any close ups at an angle. Also good for routine head shots when shooting from below or above the the eyeline. Keeps your entire subject in focus.

Awesome lens, even if you don't take advantage of the tilt-shift capabilities... tack sharp

It is an excellent lens for product photography and creative work. Endless possibilities. Be aware that you need to use this lens with a tripod as setting it up takes time and if your camera is not fixed to a tripod, it is impossible to fine tune.

The sharpest lens Canon has to offer (better than the 85 1.2). The tilt and shift makes it - Simply awesome and now my favorite lens by far.

For a tilt-shift lenses, it's a pretty sharp lens.
Good built-quality and f2.8 is bright enough for product photography.

A tilt shift lens in this range opens up so many possibilities for creativity. Sure it is manual focus, but accuracy and speed become second nature very quickly. The ability to get both eyes in focus at f 2.8 is amazing and the creamy bokeh is simply jaw dropping. For automotive, product, landscape, or architecture, there are huge photography advantages over other lenses. 16000 x 10000 pixel panoramas make for amazing prints when shifting. This lens is built like a tank and has a smooth quality focus action. The construction and sharpness cannot be understated. If you want the highest line resolution possible in any lens, or maximum corner to corner sharpness look no further. A great lens that brings another dimension into your professional or casual photography.

This lens is great for food, special effects, product, portrait and many other applications. I can always find an excuse to use this lens over a lot of my other lenses of a similar focal length. Its super sharp, its focal length is ideal for portrait, it gives you creative opportunities that no other lens gives you, its very well built ( In 7 years that I have had mine it has been dropped twice and its still working perfectly. Do not try that at home) The control over the plane of focus is great for correction or special effects. Its one lens I don't leave at my studio when I have to go on location, but I also use in my studio extensively. It goes from 2.8 to 32 making it very convenient, and allows you to get real close which makes a great difference between this lens and my Canon 85 mm in 1.2. Its not a lens to use when you have rapid moving subjects where you wold be better of with an auto focus lens, for the rest its perfect for me. Not to many photographers use it but this is one I wold recommend to any one.

I debated for a long time before deciding to purchase this lens.
In the end, the incredible control of the focal plane became the compelling factor.

I also own the 24mm TS-E and have been very pleased with that lens.

That said, I am thinking that this has the strong potential to become the favorite lens in my bag.

Its not for beginners, and it requires some effort, but for product shots, close ups, still lives and intimate landscape shots it is the real deal.

I know it would also be a great portrait lens. Thats just not my genre.
