An update to one of the most iconic toy cameras available, the Holga 120GCFN is characterized by its distinctive image quality as well as a unique built-in flash with a spinning color wheel. While the original Holga is best known for its standard-length 60mm f/8 plastic lens, this version features a glass lens construction for slightly greater sharpness and contrast while still retaining the cherished dream-like aesthetic and inherent vignetting and light leaks caused by the plastic body and simple construction. A choice between f/8 or f/11, or "cloudy" and "sunny", aperture settings is available, along with 1/100 sec. or bulb shutter speed settings and a zone focus system for focusing as close as 3' away. The built-in flash contributes to the toy camera aesthetic due to its built-in spinning color wheel, which can be set to red, blue, yellow, or standard white settings for creatively colored highlights. A tripod mount is also incorporated into the base of the camera for stable long exposure shooting in low-light conditions. A camera designed to bring the fun back to photography, the Holga is a classic toy camera capable of making some remarkable, yet inherently lo-fi photographs.

The 120GCFN model accepts 120-format roll film and includes both 6 x 4.5cm and 6 x 6cm inserts to record 16 or 12 exposures per roll, respectively. Film is manually advanced between shots using the top winding knob, with the frame progression checked using the rear red window.

Plastic body construction and simple design contributes to the distinct image quality, which is characterized by light leaks and vignetting.

Glass lens affords greater contrast and sharpness than the traditional plastic lens, yet still retains the prized Holga image quality with noticeable vignetting, field curvature, and vignetting.

Built-in flash features a spinning color wheel for adding a burst of standard white, yellow, blue, or red light and requires a AA battery.

Classic medium format toy camera accepts 120 roll film, and the included 6 x 4.5cm and 6 x 6cm film masks allow you to record either 16 or 12 frames per roll respectively.

60mm f/8 lens provides a normal field of view for working in a wide variety of situations.

Zone focusing system allows you to focus as closely as 3' away.

A 1/100th sec. shutter speed setting is available in addition to a bulb setting for long exposure shooting.

Standard 1/4"-20 tripod mount allows you to make stable long exposure photographs.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there a pinhole option?

A: No.

Q: 2. But is there really a different aperture for the cloudy and sunny setting? for years they have had this switch, but there was no stop-down when you flipped the switch, no matter what the instruction manual said or what the specs claimed. If this version changed that, it would be great to know for sure! I'd order one right now if that was confirmed. Thanks!

A: Yes the lens stops down from f8 (cloudy) to f11 sunny.

Q: 3. Does it have a built in cable release socket/threads?

A: This does not appear to have any sort of method for using a cable release.

Q: 4. Can I put any 120 film? Such as Kodak ektar or port

A: Yes, this camera takes any 120 format film.

Q: 5. Can the camera be used to make multiple-exposure photos?

A: To take double exposure images with the Holga 120N Medium Format Film Camera (Black), take a shot, rewind the film to the beginning, and take another photo on top of the first image.

Q: 6. What is the default frame size? 6 x 4.5cm? I lost the insert and don't remember what the size is without the insert.

A: It Includes 6 x 4.5cm and 6 x 6cm Masks

Q: 7. Because of the glass lens, do the images made with this camera look significantly different from the 120N with the plastic lens?

A: Yes. The glass lens in the Holga 120GCFN Medium Format Film Camera does improve the image quality slightly versus the lower cost plastic lens 120N camera.

Q: 8. Is it Leathernon the ends of the strip?

A: The FUJIFILM Shoulder Strap for GFX 100S Medium Format Mirrorless Camera is made with nylon.

Q: 9. Does this version of the Holga camera really have two f-stops? Or is the f-stop switch button just for show?

A: The 120N has a "cloudy" and "sunny" mode for f/8 or f/11 apertures.

Q: 10. Does the camera come with an instruction manual?

A: It does not include a full manual.

A little Holga camera is “like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get”. It is a fun and inexpensive way to get into medium format photography and create photos that seem to be from a different era.

It’s obviously not going to have the perfect sharpness, clarity, or anything like that from an slr or expensive point and shoot. It’s great to just “holga around with”. I highly recommend for anybody who wants to see what it’s like to use film without dumping hundreds of dollars into it. Take the experience with a grain of salt though. The lens is plastic... so you’ll have a different experience with a different film camera.

Nice to shoot without all the electronics. Can’t wait to shoot another roll.

A camera where the important thing is the photographer, according to the purchase, is exactly what I expected
If you want your photography to acquire random characteristics, where the game and enjoyment is part of the process of taking the photo, it will leave you compliant

Am using the Holga for an experimental photo class at The University of southern Maine. We had an exercise where the students were all blind-folded and were given the task of taking photos with our Holgas outside. We did have monitors. Well, I just developed some of the pics from that experience and they are wonderfully spooky. I love how the Holga captures light and how I was able to take seemingly mundane subjects, (trees, buildings, rocks) and turn them into atmospheric scenes. I know this camera isn't for everyone but I think it's a great tool when you want to experiment with photography and let go of the precision aspect.
