Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. SDHC or SDXC?

A: The Nikon D500 can use both SDHC and SDCX memory cards. Though, if you will be shooting much 4K video, you would likely go with the larger capacity cards.

Q: 2. Just curious. Which battery drains first, camera or grip? Or both equally? Can you change the battery in the grip while the camera is powered on?

A: The D500 menu gives you the option of choosing which battery drains first. I have not tried changing the battery with the camera on.

Q: 3. Is the D500 body compatible with the AF-S NIKKOR 16-85mm 3.5-5.6 G ED lens?

A: Yes, it is the primary lens I use.

Q: 4. I just installed my new grip yesterday. After reading the Vello manual, I am not sure when to activate or de-activate 'control lock switch". Should it be activated after turning -on the camera switch ? and when turning off the camera should it be turn-off after ?

A: The purpose of the Control Lock is to prevent any possible electrical damage to it or the camera. Therefore, make sure the grip Control Switch is in the L position whenever attaching/removing the grip or inserting/removing the battery. Otherwise you can leave it in the on position.

Q: 5. Will the camera (with battery) still function if the battery grip (without battery) is attached? I'm essentially interested in buying it to add some weight to my d500 so it balances better with the 500mm f4 on my Wimberley

A: Yes, it will function.

Q: 6. Will the LOCKCIRCLE LockPort adapter baseplate work with a Manfrotto 410PL Quick Release Plate?

A: According to Lockcircle, this plate will work with any quick release plate on the market.

Q: 7. Are refurbished cameras guaranteed USA versions?

A: They are USA Market versions unless specifically noted as Import on the page.

Q: 8. Is there a crop when shooting 4k video?

A: As this is a crop sensor camera to begin with, yes, there is a crop when shooting 4k video.

Q: 9. Does the cello grip accommodate Kirk or Really Right Stuff arca style camera plates and arca style L brackets?

A: Don't know. But it sure seems to work just fine.

Q: 10. Would you attach a Black Rapid strap to this grip and walk around without concern? The real Nikon grip would give me that confidence. Will the Vello?

A: I recently purchased the Bg-N17 for the D500 and have now tested it for over a week. I am not entirely sure as to the structural integrity of the grip when it comes to Black Rapid straps, however I can say that the grip attachment to the camera itself is rock solid. I may recommend testing the strap of choice and the camera-grip combo, but I think it should work fine.

I have purchased several Vello products over the years and all of them have been very dependable. When I saw that they had a battery grip for the Nikon D500 I got one. It does everything that Nikons grip does (I have a Nikon grip on my other D500) for about 1/4th of the price. Solid fit, no movement and it does EVERYTHING the Nikon grip does..

I haven't used this a lot, but I'm very satisfied with it. It works exactly as it should. I'm especially happy with the price. I have a Nikon grip for my Nikon D7000 and got this for my Nikon D500 (the older one doesn't fit the D500). I can't tell the difference, so I'm glad I went with the Vello instead of the Nikon because of the huge price difference. Maybe if you use the battery grip all the time, you find the Nikon better, but I certainly can't tell the difference.
