This 6.6 x 6.6" Schneider Combination ND & Circular Polarizer Filter is a filter that combines a solid neutral density effect and a circular polarizer effect within a single glass surface. The solid neutral density effect provides an exposure reduction of 4 stops. Its 1.2 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than would normally be required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Along with this filter's solid neutral density effect is a circular polarizer effect that is simultaneously applied to help reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges and filters this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This 6.6 x 6.6" Neutral Density 1.2 Circular Polarizer Filter is constructed from water white glass for increased optical clarity as well as color fidelity. It is compatible with filter holders that can accommodate 4mm-thick, 6.6 x 6.6" rectangular filters.

1.2 neutral density filter effect darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required and is combined with a circular polarizing effect to help reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface

16x filter factor provides a reduction of 4 stops; neutral density filter effect allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily

Polarizing filter effect arranges, and filters, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors

Strongest polarizing effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun

Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features

Constructed from water white glass for increased optical clarity

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have a Canon 24-105mm f4L(77mm). I already have a 77mm protective filter on it; with threads, so I can stack another filter. What size ND filter should I order?

A: Protective filters have the same size front and rear threads so a 77mm variable ND would be recommended.

Q: 2. Where are these made? Thanks.

A: These are manufactured in China.

Q: 3. I have a Tamron 100-400 f4.5-6.3. Is an ND64 filter too high of stops for it? What should I take into consideration when looking for ND/Polarizer filters?

A: It's hard to say how many stops is too much because the contextual information (i.e. the kind of exposure/photograph you are trying to create) has significant influence on how many stops you might need. Technically you can use any amount of stops you want and likely achieve a similar result, but you will need to adjust your ISO, aperture, and/or shutter speed/bulb exposure times to compensate for the light loss. The ND64 QuartzLine ND and CP combo is great because it allows you to the option of not stacking a simple ND and CPL, thereby shooting through two pieces of glass instead of three. This is better for image clarity and lowers the chance of reflection/refraction issues between filters and glare.

Q: 4. Can you turn the polorizer the entire way off on this filter?

A: The polarizing effect on the K&F Concept Nano-X ND2-32 Variable Fader & Circular Polarizer HD Green Coated Waterproof Anti-Scratch Japan Optics Filter (77mm) can be reduced, but not turned off.

Q: 5. What can I use as a front cap for this item (dont tell me Schneider 86mm Push-On Cap because it does NOT fit)?

A: This Sigma LCF-86 III 86mm Lens Cap is compatible with the Genustech 82mm Variable Neutral Density and Circular Polarizer Filter. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1168370-REG

Q: 6. Does this produce an X-Pattern at max ND?

A: It does at just beyond max, I just back it off a tiny bit and it's fine. The ND range is large enough that if you need to go beyond max, it's a sign that adjusting the ISO a touch might be a good idea.

Q: 7. Is it easy to see the effect of the polarizer and set it properly since the filter is so dark?

A: It is not as easy as when you have the ND and polarizer filters separate, but the best option is to increase the ISO a lot to focus and also to set the polarization and then turn the ISO down to take the picture.

Q: 8. Does it have hard stops?

A: It is smooth. Most variable ND filters are smooth so make the transition smoother in video.

Q: 9. Can I put it on a sigma 30 mm lens?

A: In theory you could with a step down ring, but you'll get vignetting on the edges. I'd recommend getting the correct 52mm filter.

Q: 10. How does this compare to the ND1000 without the polarizer? Does adding the polarizer feature have any negative impact on the quality of the ND aspect of it?

A: Having the added polarizer allows you to reduce reflection or glare in addition to reducing the exposure overall.

I compared this against the equivalent B+W MRC filter. Both were excellent, no loss in sharpness.
What I liked best about the Polar pro filter is that you have an option to use polarization when needed, and unlike traditional circular polarisers there's no extra light loss with polarization, meaning with or without polarization it's a 6 stop ND.
Another important factor for me to choose this over the B+W filters is that the B+W filter has a slight blue color cast and there's vignetting at 17mm, however the polar pro filter is perfectly neutral and no vignetting at 17mm.

The best of the various filters I've bought, no complaints.

This filter is sharp and provides excellent color with the
added bonus of a polarizer built in! The 4 stop ND filter is perfect for
streams, rivers, and waterfalls when you’re trying to keep some texture to the water. I flip the camera into live view after I focus to see the polarizer to get the right color of greens and blues in the overall image.

What really sold this filter for me was the brass ring and how it was advertised not to get stuck on the lens or other filters. I have used
Tiffen filters while achieving my BFA in Photography and B+W filters for the last 12 years I shot as a pro. These filter brands have gotten stuck on lenses and other filters with several being cut off in order to get the shot in time for my clients. B+W even states they have a brass ring, but they still get stuck! I tried the PolarPro 4stop / polarizer and had no issue taking the filter off when shooting in deserts, artic regions, and high humidity areas. I have since then purchased the 6 stop / polarizer, 10 stop / with polarizer, and
15 stop ND filters from PolarPro. I have still not had one of these filters get stuck on a lens or filter and have been using them for over a year.

I have field tested PolarPro against my B+W filters and I see no color difference between the two companies. This is probably due to the 97.9% Quartzline glass that PolarPro gets from Germany, which is something the two companies have in common. PolarPro is based in California but the resin used to coat the layers of glass is from China. This is common with filters in order to keep cost down since most consumers don’t want to spend $300 - $500 or more on a single filter.
