Featuring a slender profile and a slightly wider-than-normal focal length, the black-rimmed Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIS Aspherical from Voigtlander is a versatile prime well-suited to everyday shooting. The double Gauss optical design employs a single aspherical element, as well as ultra-high refractive index glass, to produce well-controlled, sharp imagery void of spherical aberrations. Its slightly wide focal length pairs with the bright f/2 maximum aperture to benefit making shallow depth of field imagery as well as working in low-light conditions. The smooth manual focus operation also contributes to controlling focus position, and both depth of field and focus distance scales are featured on the metal lens barrel to aid in pre-focusing or setting hyperfocal distance. This lens' physical design also features a scalloped focus ring to recall classic lens designs of the 1960s as well as afford more secure handling during use. Mixing the classic-inspired design with contemporary usage, the lens also sports an AI-S type CPU to permit in-camera adjustment of the aperture setting for faster, more intuitive exposure control.

Slightly wider-than-normal prime, this 40mm f/2 lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 60mm equivalent focal length.

Bright f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field when using selective focus techniques.

Double Gauss-type optical design uses ultra-high refractive index glass and incorporates one double-sided aspherical element to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion for greater sharpness and clarity.

Manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 9.8" away with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.

Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.

All-metal lens barrel integrates both focus distance and depth of field scales to aid in using pre-focusing and hyperfocal focusing techniques.

Scalloped focus ring and smooth focusing action affords precise control when handling.

Built-in CPU permits using in-camera controls for adjusting the lens' aperture setting.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How long is the focus throw of this lens? I have the Nikon 35mm 1.4 AIS which I use almost exclusively for cinematography and I am considering changing for this just out of this information. Thank you.

A: The focus throw on my new 40mm f/2 is long, rotating 280 degrees from infinity to the minimum marked focus distance at 0.25 m, slightly under 10". I find it excellent for fine focus.

Q: 2. Hi, Can this lens be used with Nikon FM2, FM3A and FE2 film cameras?

A: Yes. This is a fully manual lens and can be used on all of those cameras.

Q: 3. Will this work on the Nikon f

A: Yes, it will work on the Nikon F.

Q: 4. Where is this lens made?

A: This lens is made in Japan.

Q: 5. can the F mount be adapted to EF? is there an adapter ring?

A: It can be adapted using this adapter: https://bhpho.to/3vdtnDd

Q: 6. can it be locked in the f 22 spot, so that it doesn't accidentally change away from being able to use the dials on the body, instead of on the aperture ring, to change aperture?

A: NO

Q: 7. How does the focus ring feel compared to classic Nikon AI & AIS lenses? Is it tight yet smooth or a bit loose like modern Nikon AF lenses?

A: Very smooth just like manual Nikon lenses

Q: 8. Is the lens IF (internal focusing), i.e. does it retain a fixed size as one focuses?

A: The Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f/2 SL IIS Aspherical Lens for Nikon F is not an internally-focusing lens. The lens focuses (or screws out) on its helix threads and will change in length as you rotate the focusing ring from infinity to its minimum focus distance.

Q: 9. Will this work with my Nikon F3HP?

A: I works on my F3HP. It actually works on all Nikon SLRs & DSLRs from the F up to the D850 because it has the pre Ai bear claw, the AI ridge and a CPU.

Q: 10. Does the lens come with a case? If not, which third-party case/pouch would be an ideal match?

A: This lens does not come with a case. For a soft case for this lens, I'd recommend the following product: BH #OPFOP282BK

The Voigtlander Ultron 40mm F2 SLII is as good as the critiques that I read prior to purchase….Very sharp and an interesting focal length…If one can get past the fact that it’s a manual focus lens in the day of auto focus lenses then I do not see any drawbacks with this lens

Superb and extremely sharp lens! The sharpest lens Ive ever shot with in my 50+ years of photography . Never liked the 50mm lenses. The 40mm is a lens that is just about right visual-wise. This one is all metal and glass with an aspherical lens included within. It can correct aberations very well. Its a keeper..............

I decided to purchase this lens on a whim, after reading several blog posts describing the 'dreamy' feeling it enables in your subjects. The manual focus is a throw back, forcing the photographer to be deliberate in the process.

Voiglander has been around for a long time, I think one of the first to start making camera lens (before Zeiss, Nikon, or Canon). Although this lens is no longer made in Germany, the Japan version keeps up with the quality of this brand. The quality of this lens is really outstanding and very sharp. The focal range is perfect. I find the medal Nikon HN-1 lens hood is really all you need extra because the front element is far enough back (much like the 55mm micro Ais Nikon). The CPU contacts are a nice added part of a great manual lens. Focusing is very easy and the aperture stops click in place, unlike current Fuji lens. I wish all the other Voigtlander lens made for Nikon make a come back with a couple added new ones. The only other one now available new is the 58mm.

This is a svelte and sweet prime lens. Certainly equals my Zeiss 25/2.8 Distagon. Oozes quality and buttery smooth focus.

So far rendering  and contrast are great, perhaps a bit more neutral than Zeiss and more to my taste for a normal lens. I just love the 40 MM perspective over a nifty 50.

I would buy this again in a heartbeat. Next just might be the 58/1.4 Nokton!

All metal and built like a tank. Color rendering, bokeh and sharpness are top notch.

Everyone comments on how well made this lens is, and its true. Focus and aperture are precise and silky smooth, even better than the vintage Nikon lenses it resembles.

The front element is deeply recessed. I dont think a hood is needed in most circumstances.

One feature that isnt mentioned enough is this lens focuses really close - under a foot - making it even more versatile.

This lens is really a joy to use and will become part of my travel kit.

If your familiar with Voigtlander lens you will love this lens. The focus throw on this lens is amazing too. A specialty lens that give a unique look for the low price of $419!

Have only been using this lens for a couple of weeks now and I have to say it is smooth, bright, just dynamite. The build quality is superb and focusing is smooth. I would recommend it to anyone who likes the 40mm focal length on a full frame sensor, or a solid addition to a prime lens collection.
