This 4.5" Round ND Filter from Tiffen has several uses and offers the possibility of achieving otherwise unachievable results. It enables the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. Neutral density filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching either the sensor of a digital camera or the film plane of a traditional film camera. Neutral density filters are used to create some unusual special effects such as capturing the "blur" of the rippling water of a waterfall or the swirling effect of city traffic. Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience, and a collection of such filters.

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting them in precision aluminum rings.

  • To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high-speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
  • To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their backgrounds
  • To decrease the effective ISO of high-speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situations
  • To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand, or other bright scenes that could cause overexposure

  • Tiffen filters are manufactured using ColorCore technology, a closely guarded proprietary process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting them in precision metal rings
  • The ColorCore process allows Tiffen to control the color and density of their filters and the characteristics of special effects filters with much greater accuracy than typical dyed-in-the-mass filters, which usually exhibit color and density variations

  • Top Hollywood motion picture studios rely on Tiffen filters for their multimillion-dollar productions. Superior quality and design make Tiffen the overwhelming choice of moviemakers, professional photographers, and even NASA
  • Tiffen has also been awarded an Emmy, from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, for its engineering excellence
  • Tiffen, a leader in the filter industry, proudly makes its filters in the USA

Q: 2. Will this filter fit the Nikon AF-S 200-500mm 1:5.6E ED lens?

A: Yes the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition)with fit the Nikon 200-500mm lens.

Q: 3. Is this filter suitable for the upcoming eclipse 10/14/23?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) (B&H# TI95CND54) is absolutely suitable for photographing any annular solar eclipse such as the one on October 14, 2023 (and future such annular solar eclipses), as well as any total solar eclipse such as the one on April 8, 2024 -- and later ones, too, in 2026, 2028, etc. As with any similar photography (rather than optical viewing) style filter, the image would then be viewed using electronic means such as in digital live view mode when using a DSLR (rather than using the optical viewfinder) or with any mirrorless camera using its digital viewfinder or rear digital screen.

Q: 4. Is this filter ISO 12312-2:2015 compliant?

A: No, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (67mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is not ISO 12312-2 compliant and therefore not safe for direct viewing of the Sun. The filter, like most on the market, will protect your camera and allows for safe solar photography only. It's advised that you still wear protective eyewear.

Q: 5. If I’m shooting an eclipse event but not the sun/moon directly—just people—is this filter still needed to protect my gear?

A: This Solar Filter is used when you're shooting directly at the sun during the eclipse. This would be too dark to use for normal photography.

Q: 6. Why the notice that this solar filter is not safe for solar viewing???

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is designed for photographic use and is not intended for use as a viewing filter. It will protect the camera sensor, not the human eye.

Q: 7. I see the warning on the webpage but is this filter appropriate to take pictures of the 2024 eclipse using a digital camera?

A: Yes, as the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (67mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is designed for solar photography usage, it would be compatible for use to photograph the upcoming solar eclipse on October 14, 2023.

Q: 8. Is there a trick for screwing the filter onto the lens and getting the white dot on the top in the middle, so easy to see Min/Max?

A: That is not possible, the dot falls where it may when screwed to a lens.

Q: 9. This item has a warning on it stating that it is not safe for solar photography or viewing the sun. Is it suitable or not?

A: The warning, is meant for viewing. The filter does not protect the eyes from harmful light of the sun. So use the back of the Screen of your camera or a mirrorless camera.

Q: 10. 72mm is my biggest lense thread so Ill buy 72mm , but I also have a 55mm lense and 67mm lense which i would use step up rings. How will this variable ND filter fare with the smaller lenses? Will i get bad vigneting or anything else?

A: I've used it on smaller lenses, it works great for me.
