Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What improvements changed between the original version and this new release?

A: According to the manufacturer, compared to the original version, the new Plustek OpticFilm 120 Film Scanner has an entirely new sensor and upgraded, higher-quality circuitry when compared to its predecessor. Plustek has a new manufacturing process with stricter quality control, and the scanner's calibration has been adjusted for better overall performance and image quality.

Q: 2. What is the output file? Is there an option for raw output

A: Yes you can scan to a DNG file which is a raw file. The scanner comes with SilverFast scanning software that allows you to save a file to different file formats. DNG is a raw format that can be imported into LightRoom or PhotoShop.

Q: 3. Is it compatible with Apple's new OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 operating system?

A: Plustek has not released updated drivers for OS X Mavericks at this time.

Q: 4. I recently purchased a Hassy 503CW with two backs. Oneis clearly marked 6x6. The other is not marked but producesnegatives (images) that measure 5.6mmx5.6mm. Can I assumethis is the same as 6x6 or is it a film that cannot be scannedby this unit?

A: Yes. 120 medium format contains a range of frame sizes; the most common being the 6x6cm size. This actually has a frame size of 56mm x 56mm.

Q: 5. Is it possible to manual focus?

A: I'm sorry, But I really don't know. I've only used the scanner in auto focus.

Q: 6. Can this scan formats 6x7, 6x9 and 6x12?

A: yes, it covers all medium format sizes. It actually covers a little larger than 6x12

Q: 7. How can customers discriminate between the old very slow scanner and the new updated 2024 version scanner? Same Mfr#, Same B&H# !!!

A: We only sell the current version of the Plustek OpticFilm 120 Film Scanner. The part number on this version is OF120, while the prior model had a 12-digit part number.

Q: 8. How many 35mm slides and 35mm negatives will this batch scan?

A: You can scan 5 35mm slides and 2 strips of 6 35mm negatives.

Q: 9. how many images will it scan at a time?

A: With a strip of film in the holder you have to do one at a time, although after you do the settings for one, you can move to the next scan pretty easily

Q: 10. Is there a difference between this and flatbed scanners?

A: Both a film scanner and flatbed scanner operate using a light source and sensors that scan through the transparency. A dedicated film scanner utilizes a transmissive light source while a flatbed scanner uses a reflective light source. The result is greater density and clarity scanned from the transmissive light from a film scanner. Current higher quality flatbed scanners offer transparency and negative holders and often include an additional light source on the lid to mimic the transmissive light.

This works perfectly with vuescan. I didn't have to download anything just connected it to my mac and vuescan recognized it right away.
The scanner itself is definitely an upgrade from my epson perfection v600 when it comes to 35mm film.
Very happy with this little machine.

i tried both the epson perfection v600 and this one and definitely the plusrek wins by a small margin for the resolution/ image quality. i just wish this scanned more than 35mm but it’s all i need for now so it’ll do!

I purchased the scanner based on reviews. The quality of the scanner meets my needs and expectations for capturing decades of family memories. I was a bit concerned about the software based on some reviews I read, but I have found it quick and easy to use - I don't get into all the advanced features, but 75% of my photos look great with the auto settings and the few that need adjustments need a quick fix in the histogram. I am not a photo professional - I have some basic tech skills - and I found this package easy to use. Overall, excellent product. If I could wish for some improvements, they would be:
1. Auto slide feed for batch scanning
2. Auto frame/crop adjustment (if the app does it, I haven't found it)

The only issue I have had is you can not cancel a scan underway without taking a significant chance of crashing the program and having to restart the program and the scanner. I am using a Mac OS for this work.

Overall, great product!

After 44,000 scans with my old Minolta Scan Duel IV (circa 2004) it was time to move to a new scanner. I first tried Opticfilm 135. I had trouble using that on Mac OS X (native software and/or Vuescan), and the image quality was lesser than the old Minolta. I replaced it with this one (OpticFilm 8100) and I never looked back. Image quality is excellent, much better than 135 or the old Minolta, very sharp, good tonality, and works out of the box on Mac OS X. Very simple to use. Highly recommended.

This is an easy to use dedicated positive & negative scanner that produces very high quality scans from my stuff from last century. I had to call Lasersoft to get help installing the Silverlight program on my Intel Mac tower running Yosemite. They got me up & running instantly. The program itself does way more than I need, has a little learning curve, but you can do your own experimenting in the pre-scan mode with all of the adjustments it offers. I am making HQ 2400 to 3600 ppi scans & they take less than a minute for each one. Totally satisfied!

I had a little trouble at the beginning and had to install the program from the website vs the disc that was included. Once I figured that out things worked well. There is a learning curve. I appreciate the ability to adjust the images individually.

I was able to get this scanner up and running in a matter of minutes on my Mac (OSX), running VueScan Pro. The only extra step was downloading a readily available driver. (I skipped the SilverFast debacle, based on reviews I had read on this site.) Scans are sharp, grain clearly visible, with none of the Newton's Rings or other nonsense I've experienced with other scanners. Most surprising of all were the crisp and well-balanced scans I got from old color print film negatives. This scanner is totally worth the purchase price!

I needed a reliable film scanner at a good price and I have to say the Optic 8100 does the trick. It's not the fastest scanner on the block but I've never hurried my photography work flow. This scanner is free of the confusing bells and whistles of others. That has to be it's appeal. I use it to produce an archive TIFF file of selected frames that I then post in Lightroom. I do not need anything getting in the way of being able to do that. The included software is quite powerful but I have chosen to apply minimal processing at the scan stage and this package allows that. I see complaints regarding the film holder. As with most things in life one needs to understand how it was designed to work and then use it accordingly. I did purchase the two pack of extra film holders and this allows me to pre load a holder while the other is processing and empty one that I have already been through. It's all about work flow and if you're running fast to get through in a hurry, well maybe you should just find something else... this scanner does all I need it to do.
