Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, this 46mm Firecrest Ultra ND 0.9 Filter from Formatt Hitech is a neutral density filter providing a 3-stop reduction in exposure. This 0.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Firecrest Ultra series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

ND 0.9 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 3-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistance for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this filter have hard stops?

A: So as not to confuse with my prior answer, there are no intermediate stops but yes there are stops at each end.

Q: 2. How thick is this filter?

A: The profile is rather thin. It is similar to a typical UV filter in thickness. Which is actually thin considering all of the components involved in a variable ND. One thing to keep in mind: on my 16-35mm II (82mm filter), once mounted, it does not flush with the lens. It is slightly wider (3-4mm) than the tip of the lens. It can be pretty annoying if you're trying to mount a hood.

Q: 3. How thick is this filter?

A: I don't have this filter. Not sure why I was asked by BH to answer the question. Sorry.

Q: 4. does this 95mm filter still allows for the Sony 200-600 mm lens factory hood to be mounted with the filter on?

A: You coudl use the included lens hood on the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS Lens with the B+W 95mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano Filter.

Q: 5. Would an 82mm lens cap be a snug fit with this? Or does it need to be bigger?

A: The 82mm cap works well on the filter for 77mm

Q: 6. Can someone confirm if this 95mm still allows for the Sony 28-135mm factory hood to be mounted with the filter on? Thank you!

A: It does not allow for the factory hood to mount - it is too big for the hood to slide over the filter.

Q: 7. Can this filter fit the Sony 10-18mm wide-angle lens?

A: That is a very wide angle lens and I would suspect a vignette problem. The answer to that would be to buy a step-up ring and use the 77mm version of filter. Now you have a filter that will adapt to any lens you might have with the appropriate step-up ring. By the way, the 77mm and is often on sale for less than the 62mm.

Q: 8. Will this filter cause vignetting on the Canon RF 35/1.8 (using a Canon RP body)?

A: This filter would be specific to wide angle lenses, so it would not vignette on a lens like the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8.

Q: 9. Does this create vignetting on the Voigt 40mm f/1.2 on a Leica M?

A: No, this filter should not cause vignetting on a 40mm lens.

Q: 10. Hey guys/gals! I have the 82mm on a sony GMaster 24-70mm 2.8. I mainly got it for shooting video becasue slog has a minimum iso of 800 so I needed to reduce the light. Everything seemed to be working perfectly for awhile but now I'm starting to notice some vignetting in the corners when I'm at 24mm. It's very slight when shooting video but pretty bad when I'm shooting photos. What's goin on?? Anyone else with a similar experience or did I just not notice it before for some reason?...

A: That is true and why I sent it back. Get the Schneider 82mm True-Match Vari-ND Filter instead. It does not do that due to it's type of construction. Although more money, it is worth it.
