Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, this 67mm Firecrest Ultra ND 0.6 Filter from Formatt Hitech is a neutral density filter providing a 2-stop reduction in exposure. This 0.6 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Firecrest Ultra series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

ND 0.6 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 2-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistance for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. is the front filter thread larger than the main filter thread?

A: The front of the filter will corresponds with the thread size of the lens. The Urth 77mm ND64-1000 Variable ND Lens Filter Plus+ (6 to 10 Stop) has a front thread of 77mm.

Q: 2. Is it easy to see the effect of the polarizer and set it properly since the filter is so dark?

A: It is not as easy as when you have the ND and polarizer filters separate, but the best option is to increase the ISO a lot to focus and also to set the polarization and then turn the ISO down to take the picture.

Q: 3. I am wondering- if you had two of these filters stacked, would you be able to safely shoot the coming eclipse?? Stop wise it would seem so. I already own one and love this filter.

A: Everything that I have read on Canon's website and the Eclipse 2017 website says NO! Regular ND filters will not work. The filter needs to be photographic filters for solar photography. The danger is damaging the camera sensor, your eyes, and the camera electronics. You want to get a White Light Solar Filter, such as made by StarGuy.

Q: 4. I see the filter does not protrude from the sides like most NDs. Can you use the original lens hood with this filter?

A: Most likely, yes, but it depends on the lens and the hood.

Q: 5. Can the OEM Lens hood be used while filter is on? I can still use the lens hood with the old Hoya variable ND.

A: Hoya 77mm Variable Density II Filter gets in the way of the original lens hood and it cannot be used.

Q: 6. would this work with the tilta mini matte box if I added an extension ring in there?

A: Yes, It comes with an 82mm adapter ring.

Q: 7. Does this filter have a hard stop at both ends or does it continuously turn?

A: Continuously turn

Q: 8. Will the filter fit into the leather pouch with the 7282 step up ring attached to it? It is hard to tell from the photos.

A: Yes the filter fits in the leather pouch with the 7282 step up ring attached or detached to it. I think you can even fit both step up rings into the leather pouch along with the filter. You could use a small microfiber cloth to separate them from the filter.

Q: 9. Can anyone confirmed which version this is? B&H photos show the stop indicators on the side as being lines, but reviews show the indicators being actual numbers.

A: that is an older photo, yes it has numbers.

Q: 10. I've read and heard online that this filter effectively cuts some measure of IR. How true is this?

A: Syrp does not list any specifications on IR transmittance. Without a listed specification, this is subject to product variance. It is impossible to guarantee a specific IR attenuation.

I used this ND filter for my portrait and landscape shooting. It helped me to shoot with wide aperture in mid-day so that the image would be so over exposed. It is a good quality for this price.

I was unsure which ND filter to purchase for my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. Did an online chat, gave B&H the details and my concerns and they recommended this ND filter. Fits like a glove (this camera is not easy to fit) and on my first test drive it did what it is supposed to do. Looking forward to putting it to good use.
