Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, this 67mm Firecrest Ultra ND 2.1 Filter from Formatt Hitech is a neutral density filter providing a 7-stop reduction in exposure. This 2.1 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Firecrest Ultra series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

ND 2.1 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 7-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistance for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this filter have click stops for each ND stop? If so, do the click stops work even when the set screw/knob is removed?

A: No, the filter has no stopping when changing the filter strength. It is smooth throughout, with no hard stop.

Q: 2. What size is the front filter thread?

A: 7artisans Photoelectric 82mm 8-Stop Variable ND Filter does not have front threads. You can not stack another filter or cap on top of this ND.

Q: 3. would this work with the tilta mini matte box if I added an extension ring in there?

A: Yes, It comes with an 82mm adapter ring.

Q: 4. I see the filter does not protrude from the sides like most NDs. Can you use the original lens hood with this filter?

A: Most likely, yes, but it depends on the lens and the hood.

Q: 5. I plan on using this filter with my canon 70-200mm L series lens. Will I still be able to use the lens hood with this filter?

A: K&F Concept 77mm Nano X-Pro Magnetic ND2-32 (1-5 Stop) Variable Neutral Density Filter is very wide in the front and the lens hood in the Canon 70-200 is very narrow so the lens hood will probably not work with the filter unfortunately.

Q: 6. Will the filter fit into the leather pouch with the 7282 step up ring attached to it? It is hard to tell from the photos.

A: Yes the filter fits in the leather pouch with the 7282 step up ring attached or detached to it. I think you can even fit both step up rings into the leather pouch along with the filter. You could use a small microfiber cloth to separate them from the filter.

Q: 7. Does this filter have a hard stop at both ends or does it continuously turn?

A: Continuously turn

Q: 8. I have a Tamron 100-400 f4.5-6.3. Is an ND64 filter too high of stops for it? What should I take into consideration when looking for ND/Polarizer filters?

A: It's hard to say how many stops is too much because the contextual information (i.e. the kind of exposure/photograph you are trying to create) has significant influence on how many stops you might need. Technically you can use any amount of stops you want and likely achieve a similar result, but you will need to adjust your ISO, aperture, and/or shutter speed/bulb exposure times to compensate for the light loss. The ND64 QuartzLine ND and CP combo is great because it allows you to the option of not stacking a simple ND and CPL, thereby shooting through two pieces of glass instead of three. This is better for image clarity and lowers the chance of reflection/refraction issues between filters and glare.

Q: 9. Can you stack PolarPro ND filters?

A: The PolarPro 82mm ND1000 QuartzLine Solid Neutral Density 3.0 and Circular Polarizer Filter (10-Stop) have front filter threads, so you could stack them with other filters.

Q: 10. Can anyone confirmed which version this is? B&H photos show the stop indicators on the side as being lines, but reviews show the indicators being actual numbers.

A: that is an older photo, yes it has numbers.

Pictures are clear. I have only used Hoya filters after having a couple of tiffens.

A must for using f/1.4 in the daytime. ND8x ISO160 max.1s/4000 is JUST OK for using f/1.4 on a sunny day.

Great optics. Worth every penny. Works much better than cheap ones. Auto color balance in the sony a77 is unaffected.

I am not a huge Hoya fan as when it comes to UV and CPL filters there are better value alternatives out there, however this is a fantastic filter (especially for the price). Very well coated and produces no color shifts!
