This is a more technical device than you might expect but it works wonderfully. It takes some serious getting used to and set-up. Unlike some of the others DJI gimbals it's not a plug and play type piece of equipment. But once you get the hang of it, it works wonders and opens up the door to a whole new style of shooting.

I've been loving my Ronin-S. It is incredibly smooth and pretty easy to operate. It's not nearly as heavy as I was anticipating based on the initial reviews I'd seen before it came out. The joystick is the smoothest I've used which is really nice. I'm looking forward to using it on many projects. I would highly recommend it.

I do have two things I'm not super keen on though. First, when I pre-ordered it, the camera and lens compatibility list for advanced functions was much larger and the two cameras that I own (6d and 70d) were on it. That was a huge selling point. When it actually came out, only the 5D and 6d mkii were actually compatible. I was pretty disappointed with that. I really hope the new firmware updates take care of that and what they advertised will work.

Secondly, holding the trigger is what locks the pan and tilt. Maybe there is a way and I don't know yet but it would be great if you could lock the tilt but not the pan. That functionality on the Crane 2 was really nice.

I ordered the Ronin-S on June 6th and received it on the 20th of July. Throughout the month and a half long wait, I checked the reviews for this product every day and was shocked to see it getting one and two star reviews. I'd seen a lot of YouTube videos of people just loving it!

I am a wedding videographer and I shoot with a Canon 1dxii. Most other gimbals like this just don't accommodate the weight of the beast, but I can say that this gimbal changes that. I shot a wedding this past weekend and the gimbal performed amazing! I could even put my 85mm 1.2 (an extremely heavy lens) on and it still performed amazing.

Balancing is easy if you practice a couple of times with your lenses. It doesn't need to be perfect for it to work. If you can get it relatively close to balanced, it works just great.

The battery life is amazing! I used it for most of the day and it only drained about 20% of the battery.

Overall, this gimbal has completely changed the game for me and I cannot wait to use it more!

Build quality ... weight capacity ... usability ... everything about this Gimbal is awesome!!

Wish there were even more accessories for this, it took a bit of online lurking to figure out how to get this working, but it's great!

I have the Crane 2 and I am quite happy with it but I thought I would give the Ronin S a try. Mostly I use a GH5S on the gimbal so the first upgrade is manual focus control which works great. The Ronin S seems a little easier to balance and the motion seems a bit smoother. The Ronin S feels better in my hands but it is noticeably heavier. I also like that the Ronin S you can control motion using the joystick and gesture at the same time. I have to choose which mode to use on the Crane 2.

One thing I don't understand is why you have to connect that battery pack to the gimbal to charge it. That is inconvenient I like the replaceable batteries in the crane better. At least it charges relatively fast.

The extra weight seems worth it to me to get the extra features. I will keep the Ronin S and likely sell the crane 2. I hope they sell extra batteries soon I always want a backup.

Got an email from B&H to review the Ronin S, which I never respond to them. But it did remind me to see what accessories might be available. I saw that it has a 3.5 stars???? That's nonsense. So here I am. The Ronin S is awesome. I use the Ronin M all the time. This S model gives so much more in performance features. I use the GH5 with it flawlessly, focus, start/stop record. Would I recommend it? YES.


I can only come up with 2 issues and those are operator issues. First sadly I already broke it, kinda. The little controlling cable cover door that hangs down when the cable is attached is soft. It was dark and I was breaking the S down. For some reason I didn't feel that I was grabbing the door along with the connector and pulled the door right off. Beware its soft and didn't catch I was grabbing both. You cannot take it apart and put the door tab back in. I took the smallest Leatherman flat screwdriver to slowly push it back in being careful not to puncher the cover.



Second problem I had was forgetting that the GH5 connection door was open when removing the camera.... I know dumb but I was lucky no damage when I was twisting off it only made a snapping noise. Be careful removing the camera.



That's it 2 operator errors. The Ronin S is FUN! So you might be wondering am I selling the Ronin M? Absolutely NO!


After using both they are built for different situations. I need/want both. 3.5 stars? That's just nuts. It's 5 stars easy!



FYI: GH5 users the S will balance with a Zacuto Dock attached to the mounting plate perfectly.

such awesome technology! was a little hard to get initially balanced, but i've also never had to balance a gimbal before.
everything (besides follow focus) works perfectly using the IR cable with my canon t6s. havent had any issues so far

Great build quality, excelent for my 6d mark ii just waiting for the pull focus to work with my camera in future updates
