The Kopul SDI-PPC is a stereo, passive DI Box designed to bridge the gap between consumer-level audio sources and pro audio destinations. With this unit, you can route the audio of instruments, smartphones, tablets, receivers, and more into mixing consoles or PA systems.

On the input side of the SDI-PPC, you’ll find two 1/4" TS jacks. These are suitable for instruments such as electric guitars, basses, and keyboards. If you're using only one of the 1/4" inputs, the other can function as a parallel output, allowing you to send the copy of the signal to an amplifier. This usage lets you split a guitar signal during recording, so you have the amped track in addition to a clean, DI’ed take to use during the mixing stage. A 3.5mm input is on hand for playing backing tracks from smartphones, tablets, and other compatible media players. Rounding out the input section are two RCA jacks for turntables, A/V connections, computer soundcards, and more. Two XLR connectors are provided for outputs.

The SDI-PCC makes use of a passive design that employs custom-wound transformers for matching low-impedance sources to high-impedance destinations; thus, you can plug your guitar or stereo backing-track into the input, route the output directly to a mixing console or PA system, and mitigate the noise issues often associated with plugging straight in. These transformers are isolated to eliminate buzz and hum from ground loops. Furthermore, they help the unit to secure a warm sound that smoothen the frequently-harsh characteristics of audio streaming from digital sources. With 128 dB of dynamic range, you don’t have to worry about high signal levels clipping or distorting, and for extra measure, a -15 dB pad can attenuate levels that are too high for the device. The SDI-PPC features a sturdy aluminum housing suitable for withstanding the rigors of touring life.

The high-performance transformers are custom-wound to meet the needs of converting high-impedance unbalanced signals to low-impedance balanced audio. Thus, signal from many different devices can be connected to the microphone-level inputs of a mixing board, or sent directly to a PA system.

The transformers are made to withstand extremely high signal levels while maintaining linearity from 20 Hz to 18.5 kHz. The resulting smooth Bessel response curve offers a warm and natural, making these transformers suitable for handling the sometimes-harsh sound of digital sources.

Sending audio directly from a tablet or smartphone to a mixing console can sport less-than-optimal results. This 3.5mm input will send audio from a tablet, smartphone, or MP3 player to a mixing board without any of the harsh side effects of plugging straight in, thanks to the custom-wound transformers.

The stereo RCA connectors are suitable for connecting the audio signals from a computer soundcard as well as A/V components such as a turntable and DVD player to a sound system.

You can use the SDI-PPC as a traditional direct box for electric guitar or bass. Parallel wiring allows you to output the signal from the unused connector to another source, such as a guitar amp. Dual 1/4" connectors also make it possible to connect two instruments to the mixing board at the same time. You can even maintain the stereo quality of the sounds from keyboards by connecting stereo 1/4" TRS outputs to the SDI-PPC with an insert Y-cable.

The -15 dB pad attenuates the signal level from loud sources like an electric guitar or keyboard.

The SDI-PPC's housing is made out of heavy-duty aluminum. It will withstand the shocks and bumps of the road, standing up to use in live applications.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If you use only the left XLR output does it sum to mono?

A: The unit would not sum the two inputs to mono to the left output.

Q: 2. Why do the specs say it needs phantom power? Is that correct?

A: Seems like an error. This is a passive device and no power of any sort is required.

Q: 3. Will it convert RCA input signal of an active subwoofer to balanced xlr inputs?

A: If you are referring to the line level pass-thru on a powered sub, or RCA line outs from a receiver or pre-amp to XLR ins on a sub, then yes. You do not want to run a powered signal through this device, just line-level.

Q: 4. Does it send signal out of both outputs simultaneously (like a splitter)?

A: Yes, it does. When splitting, you will lose a bit of the treble, but it's not a huge difference. I use it in that regime--sending two signals out of it to different gear. Let me know if you want to know more. Good luck.

Q: 5. Does this sound better than Kopul PDI-40? Or are the electronics inside the same? This model has more inputs and outputs, but if I only need one, will get the same quality using the model# PDI-40?

A: The SDI-PPC and PDI-40 are designed for use with different equipment, so the best option depends on the device you are going to be using and the application it is being used for. The SDI-PPC is a stereo direct box with stereo input and output. It has a stereo 3.5mm input for smartphones, tablets, and compatible media players, a pair of RCA jacks for turntables, A/V connections, computer soundcards, and a pair of 1/4" TS inputs for connecting instruments like guitar, bass, and keyboards to a mixer. Two XLR outputs are provided for left and right stereo signal or for splitting an instrument's output to route it to two destinations, like an amplifier and a mixer. A -15 dB pad is included for attenuation and a ground lift switch helps to eliminate hum. The PDI-40 has a single XLR input and single XLR output for connecting a microphone or an instrument like guitar, bass or keyboards to a mixer. It has a switchable -20 or -40 dB pad and ground lift switch.

Q: 6. There are two versions of the DB24: a) Ground/Lift on each channel; b) Ground/Lift and Mono/Stereo. Which is this? Thanks.

A: THis does include the ground lift switches

Q: 7. headphones?

A: This unit is not designed to be used with headphones.

Q: 8. I just bought 1 of these a few days ago from you. It showed up today and the 3.5mm end is not solid black like the one in the picture? Why is it different. I really wanted the black end. Could you see if that is still available like that? Thanks

A: It is not unusual for a manufacturer to change a small non-critical production feature or cosmetic component that wouldn't affect performance. We do not have another version available.

Q: 9. Are the rack ears reversible?

A: Thank you for your question. The rack ears on the this unit are not reversible

Q: 10. If you plug in more than one Kopul USB device, will Windows recognize them separately and allow separate applications to output?

A: No. Only one Kopul PSI-USB USB to Audio Direct Box can be used with the computer.
