Exhibiting improved clarity, flatness, and reduced reflectivity, this 77mm Firecrest Ultra ND 0.9 Filter from Formatt Hitech is a neutral density filter providing a 3-stop reduction in exposure. This 0.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Designed using inspiration from their cine Firecrest filters, these Ultra filters receive an additional lapping and polishing process during production to ensure lower reflectivity and improved clarity and sharpness.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order to maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. The filter is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring, which features front threads for stacking additional filters or attaching a lens cap.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

The Firecrest Ultra series filters exhibit greater clarity and have lower reflectivity than the original Firecrest filters. Borrowing from the range of Firecrest cine filters, the Ultra series filters undergo a secondary lapping and polishing process after the initial polishing and bonding stage. This additional step helps to ensure flatness and consistency for improved image quality.

ND 0.9 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 3-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistance for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and is set within a 5.5mm-thick SuperSlim aluminum filter ring.

Q: 1. Does this item have uv/ir filtering?

A: The Haida NanoPro Solar Neutral Density Filter (95mm, 20-Stop) does not block UV and IR light. Instead, get the MrStarGuy 95mm Thread-in White-Light Solar Filter, BH #STSG95MMSOL. This filter blocks UV and IR light.

Q: 2. Do normal 77mm lens caps fit on this?

A: No you will need to purchase an 82mm cap.

Q: 3. Is the thumb screw removable for use w/ a lens hood?

A: According to the manufacturer, the thumb screw on the the SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter can be removed. However, SmallRig recommends not to use this filter with a lens hood.

Q: 4. Is this filter safe for photographing a Solar Eclipse?

A: The Haida NanoPro ND5.0 Filter (95mm, 16.5 Stop) is unsafe for photographing a Solar Eclipse. The filter does not block UV or IR light. Instead, get the MrStarGuy 95mm Thread-in White-Light Solar Filter, BH #STSG95MMSOL.

Q: 5. Does this have hard stops?

A: Hello Michael, The Variable ND Filter does not have hard stops. The nature of this type of filter will not have incremental hard stops, and the MIN and MAX marks on the rings are used as a guide.

Q: 6. Is it Course thread?

A: The Haida NanoPro Solar Neutral Density Filter (95mm, 20-Stop) has a standard thread. It is not coarse.

Q: 7. Will the image of the sun be white or orange?

A: The sun will appear orange with the Haida NanoPro Solar Neutral Density Filter (77mm, 20-Stop).

Q: 8. Hi, I would like to know if it is compatible with the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical IF Lens for Sony E-Mount . It says the filter thread is 72, so is my other lens (Soney Zeiss 35mm FE 1.4 Distagon) . But I have heard somewhere that this ND filter fitted these lenses... Can you help please?

A: The 85 mm lens has 72 filter size

Q: 9. I've got 3 Canon lenses each with 67mm on the filter end. Does it make any sense to buy 77mm Eclipse filter and a step-up ring 67-77 (just to cover the range of lenses that I maybe will plan to buy someday) ? I'm very afraid I can get vignetting with this setup because I often shoot with wide-angle (10-18mm focal length, APS-C). Or maybe the right way is to take 67mm model of Eclipse?

A: I purchased one Eclipse Variable ND filter and step up rings to use with my Nikkor lensesand have found it to be a good choice. Vignetting is not a problem for me and I have been pleased with the results. Especially in motion film work.

Q: 10. Can I use it for Solar photography directly for Oct 2023?

A: The Haida NanoPro Solar Neutral Density Filter (82mm, 20-Stop) is safe for the camera, but not for viewing by a person. Always use an approved ISO 12312-2 certified solar filter when observing the Sun through optics or cameras.
