Employing the smoothness and vibration absorption of a fluid head with the balance and range of movement of a traditional gimbal, the Gimbal Fluid Head from Gitzo is ideal for wildlife photography and bird watching, even for extensive observation and with heavy equipment. The head supports up to 17.6 lb of gear and weighs 3 lb itself. It has a tilting range of +/- 180° along with a full 360° panning rang, and both axes have independent locks for precise control.

Using fluid cartridge technology, borrowed from the cine and video industry, movements are rendered smooth and stable and a fluidity control system, the Whip-Pan, affords precise control and maneuverability when tracking at high speeds. The Whip-Pan automatically applies friction, excluding the fluid rotation on the panoramic axis, for realistic motion dynamics without shock or vibration. This system also regulates the fluidity depending on rotating and tilt speeds for consistent control regardless if doing slow or high-speed rotations.

The head's control knobs have a soft-touch, ergonomic design and the panning bar is detachable for a more compact form factor when not in use. There is a built-in Arca-type compatible quick release base for extensive compatibility and an Arca-type plate with rubber grips is included. Additionally, the head is constructed from lightweight magnesium and aluminum alloys and finished with Gitzo's trademark Noir Décor finish

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this head fit onto the Gitzo Systematic Series 5 Carbon Fiber Tripod with Arca-Type Series 4 Center Ball Head (BH #GIGK5543LS83 MFR #GK5543LS-83LR)?

A: If you remove the Gitzo GIGH4383LR Series 4 Center Ball Head from the top of the Gitzo Systematic Series 5 Carbon Fiber Tripod with Arca-Type Series 4 Center Ball Head with Lever Release, then yes, you may connect the Gitzo Gimbal Fluid Head to the top of the Gitzo Systematic Series 5 Carbon Fiber Tripod.

Q: 2. Does the Gitzo Gimbal Fluid Head have a flash bracket that attaches to the head? Will the Wimberly bracket fit on the Gitzo head?

A: Wimberly makes two kinds of bracket. One mounts directly to the head. This probably would not work. Wimberly also makes a bracket designed to fasten on top of Wimberley plates or replacement feet. Assuming you were using the appropriate sized Arca Swiss style plate or foot (Wimberley, Kirk, RRS, or others on your telephoto lens, that style of bracket will work. (It is also a superior design to competitors' flash brackets, in that it can be used with a variety of lens tube diameters, and it can be used with the lens/camera combination even when not mounted on any head!)

Q: 3. I am loking to buy gitzo fluid gimbal head for canon 600mm with 1dx mark2 is it sutiable please do suggest thank you

A: Good, regular gimbal heads are designed to move easily and freely in every direction you want to move your lens/camera combination. Fluid heads smooth out, but slow down, freedom of movement. If you are interested in shooting stills of running or flying creatures I suggest you look elsewhere. If your purpose is smoothness of motion, even if that motion prevents you from catching up with some targets, a fluid gimbal may be the way to choose.

Q: 4. I put my 600 f4 on it. Gimbal is smooth but is it suppose to kinda click at the bottom where it would be level? Hard to push?

A: The Gitzo Gimbal Fluid Head does not click at the bottom. Once it has been properly balanced you should be able to tilt it to any angle with weightless freedom.

Q: 5. Will this head fit the Gitzo Traveler GT1545TUS that I bought from you?

A: Yes. That is correct! You would be able to mount The Gitzo 2-Way Fluid Head, onto The Gitzo GIGT1545T, Traveler Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod. You may want to add a leveler in between. See below. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/431861-REG/Acratech_1117_Leveling_Base.html

Q: 6. Do you have any distributer or retailer in india thank you

A: We are only in New York City and we ship world-wide. If you add your items to a B&H shopping cart, you can calculate the items costs, shipping methods, time for delivery, any taxes and total costs very quickly.

Q: 7. Is the "Arca-type" QR plate/clamp really dimensionally compatible with the Arca-Swiss QR standard? Many QR products claim to be "Arca- compatible", only to find out that they are not dimensionally compatible, but are just the same basic style.

A: The clamp on the Gitzo Gimbal Fluid Head is really compatible with the Arca-Swiss quick release standard.

Q: 8. Can you attach a camera body to the Gitzo gimble head plate? (Nikon D850) to be able to use it with a wide angle lens (without a collar) - I'm trying to move around with as less tripod heads as possible

A: I don't believe it will fit. The side of the camera will most likely hit the vertical shaft of the gimbal.

Q: 9. How to transfer its clamp to Really Right Stuffs lever clamp or Screw Knob clamp? Which part I should purchase to make it happen?

A: The clamp on the Gitzo Gimbal Fluid Head cannot be changed.

Q: 10. Isn't it a replica of the Swarovski Professinoal Tripod Head (B&H # SWPTH MFR # 49077)? Which is better, or they are just the same but the Gitzo is cheaper?

A: This head started out as an OEM product that Gitzo made for Swarovski, so the two products come from the same factory. The Gitzo head does not have an adjustable drag but rather uses the Whip-Pan feature which is described in the listing overview tab.

I already have two gimbal heads but was fascinated by Gitzo's offering. This head made in Italy has a very smooth fluid action for tracking with a big tele. The build quality is worthy of the Gitzo brand. I have several Gitzo tripods, one of which is over 50 years old, which all still function very well despite years of challenge and abuse. It appears that the gimbal head will do the same. While the resistance is adjustable, the minimum resistance and smooth action seem to work fine for tracking birds without any hint of jerk or stutter.

I bought this in April after looking at other fluid head options. The Gitzo appeared to be and has turned out to actually be an excellent gimbal head. I bought it for video shooting and it works very well for this purpose with my telephoto lenses. For small lenses I use an inexpensive pan/tilt head.

It is very easy to get the exact amount of tension I want for both tilting and rotating the read. Much easier than with any other head I have used. Tool-less adjustment of the support platform is another feature I like, and one shared with my Custom Brackets gimbal head.

With even my 600mm f/4 lens mounted there is enough tension to keep the lens from crashing down when I remove the camera should I forget to lock it all the way (the Custom Brackets has a flip up lever to lock the head in place which also works very well). I am often adding or removing a teleconverter on a long lens and having more control over the lens when the camera is removed is important.

The lever comes off and I do not use the lever when shooting stills. The head is still on the large size and so for air travel I take the Custom Brackets gimbal that comes apart completely without tools and is a bit more compact when disassembled.

The $500 price is also a bargain as compared to other fluid dampened gimbal heads like the one from RRS for example.

I wanted a gimbal head to support a big telephoto lens and would work well for vidos. The Gitzo does this very well and I have been using it for most of my still photography as well.

The dampening is with grease and one could use a lighter weight grease to get faster movement but this would not be an advanage with video and seldom of real value for still photography.

The only con with this head is that it is large and does not break down for travel. For travel I use a Custom Brackets gimbal head which is the best still gimbal available.

This head is a real pleasure to use. I had it out in the field with a 150-600mm lens, fully extended. Well-balanced and very smooth motion from the fluid damping. Just for kicks, I tracked a hawk with it gliding around a wide canyon at about 1/2 km. Very easy to use. Impressive quality. Yeah, Gitzo is heavy, but well-worth the weight to carry.

I chose this gimbal with a single stick (although I can take it off if I need to). The smoothness, with a ever-so-slight resistance offers me a non-jerky motion when I am shooting a flying bird!

The Gitzo Gimbal Fluid Head is something I should have purchased years ago. I was struggling with a cheaper tripod head that didn't hold its position--ever. I compensated but was frustrated. The Gitzo head holds it position if I raise or lower my 5oo mm lens/camera or if I pan or if I do both together. I'm happy I decided to spend the money to get a quality tripod head. I enjoy photographing wading birds like great blue herons and this Gitzo tripod head makes it easier to get the shot I imagen.
