Q: 1. Hi. Can this filter be used in combination with IR sensitive film (like Rollei Infrared or Ilford sfx)? I see that some filters are described as particularly useful for infrared photography, but not this one. It seems to be the only 30.5 mm dark red filter in stock though, so thought I might as well ask. Thanks in advance!

A: Infrared film, if shot without filters, looks like normal black & white film. That is because regular light overpowers the IR. So you need filters that are IR friendly. In this instance, you could use this Heliopan 30.5mm #29 Dark Red Filter with Ilford. According to Ilford, When used with a deep red filter, SFX 200 renders blue skies almost black and green vegetation almost white to create a stunning infra-red look to your shots. However, according to Rollei: Please Note: To achieve strong Infrared (IR) effects we recommend exposing the film at a maximum of ISO 25 and using an R72 dark red infrared filter or deeper infrared filter. Standard Red 25A filters are not recommended. Individualized exposure testing is necessary to realize optimal results. Here is the R72 IR by LEE Filters 4 x 4 Infrared (87C) Polyester Filter B&H # LE87C44 which is a gel, not glass or resin. You cut and tape it to the lens. Q: 2. Difference between the Series 9 Tiffen water white glass ND and the standard Series 9 Tiffen ND?

Q: 3. How many stops should I add when using this filter?

A: This Tiffen 43mm Deep Yellow #15 Filter would require the addition of 1.3 stops.

Q: 4. What is the filter factor for this? I can't seem to find that data on Tiffen's website.

A: This filter has a filter factor of 4 as per Tiffen.

Q: 5. Can you use this filter on a canon eos r camera?

A: Yes if you have a lens on the Canon R that has 52mm front threads you can use this filter on it.

Q: 6. How many stops is this filter?

A: The filter factor for this filter is 8x, which translates to 3 stops.

Q: 7. Does this filter have a coating? What is the advantage/disadvantage of a coating compared to a filter like the B&W ND MRC

A: This filter is not coated, Tiffen does make a series of multi-coated ND filters called Digital HT which can be found at the link below. Coating provide the filter with scratch resistance, makes it easier to clean and helps to prevent reflections. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Tiffen%2082%20ht&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=

Q: 8. Will this fit a 65mm lens?

A: No.

Q: 9. does it have both male and female threads for adding more filters onto this one?

A: Yes, it has both male and female on front for adding more filters.

Q: 10. Using flash outdoors (flash dialled 1 stop brighter than sun), id like to reduce the blue saturation of the ambient daylight (in a colour image, not B&W) will this filter reduce/mute/gray the blue saturation? If anyone has tried this, can you please direct me to an example image? Thanks everyone!

A: Colored filters are usually meant to be used to change the contrast in black and white photography. If you were to use a yellow filter while shooting color, the whole picture will have a yellow cast. The best way to reduce the blue saturation would be to either overexpose the sky, or ideally in post production you can under-saturate the blues.

I have used Tiffen filters for 40+ years, and have always been satisfied with their build, glass quality, and performance. The 49mm 2 #8 is no exception. It gives good tonal separation, and makes land/seascapes pop.
Perfect price/quality balance.

I use this in place of the IR72 quite often and it delivers. It gives less contrast with some of those IR films and still renders beautiful clouds and foliage.
