The 55mm #29 Dark Red Filter from Tiffen is a filter designed to build contrast in black and white photography and separation between tones. In landscape photography, clear skies are darkened and when combined with a polarizer, a very extreme contrast is added to the image. Many forensic photographers use the #29 Red filter as it absorbs blues colors and enhances red. Therefore, the filter aids in finding evidence. Infrared images are also enhanced giving a stronger effect and look by making foliage look white. The red filter is ideal for copying blue prints, since it enhances the lines and is easier to view the image. It has a filter factor of 16.5, so you must increase your exposure by 4 1/3 of a stop to compensate.

Tiffen filters are not dyed, but are manufactured by using ColorCore technology. This process laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass and grinds down and polishes the glass. The glass is then mounted to the metal ring, which after that can be screwed onto the lens for the desired effect.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Would this work for my canon EF-M 15-45 mm lens?

A: Yes. The Tiffen #25 Red Filter (49mm) will fit that lens.

Q: 2. Since you are out of stock on the Tiffen 49mm Cir. Pol., can I use a linear polarizer instead on a mirrorless camera? My recollection is that Cir. Polarizer was developed to compensate for the effect of the mirror on light measurement in the camera, and if so, then shouldn’t be necessary for mirrorless camera.

A: Yes, a linear polarizer will have no effect on metering or autofocus (PDAF or CAF) in a mirrorless camera, which historically would cause metering and autofocus issues in cameras with mirrors or single-translucent lenses (SLTs).

Q: 3. Filter Factor 2x (1 Stop)?! According to Ansel a #61 Green has a Filter Factor of 12. As also listed on the Kodak specs for same type of filtre. Is this a typo?

A: This filter is 2.5 stops

Q: 4. Hello,What is the difference between this product and the Tiffen 82mm Circular Polarizing Filter?Thank you,Nansen

A: A linear polarizer only differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not contain a quarter wave plane that enables use of auto focus and exposure features. It is generally advised to not use linear polarizers with digital cameras, as digital SLRs are dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering.

Q: 5. Does this fit Nikon Lens threads?

A: Peter, B&H lists the lens filter thread specifications at the web page below as having a 1.0 pitch, which is a coarse thread.a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1175034-REG/nikon_af_s_nikkor_200_500mm_f_5_6e.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1175034-REG/nikon_af_s_nikkor_200_500mm_f_5_6e.html/a

Q: 6. Will a linear polarizer affect the AF system of my Sony a7iii?

A: We recommend a Circular Polarizing filter for autofocus cameras

Q: 7. Will this work with digital as well as film cameras?

A: Yes indeed! Although to work re infrared the digital camera would need to be adjusted to take infrared images.I hope this helps.Baer

Q: 8. Does the filter have inner threads so that I can stack filters?

A: Yes, Tiffen #25 Red Filter (40.5mm) has inner and outer threads allowing you to stack filters.

Q: 9. How could this be used with digital systems?

A: The Tiffen 72mm Red 23A Filter will work with digital cameras when the camera is set to B&W mode.

Q: 10. How does this filter effect skin tones would an orange 23a be better?

A: This filter is designed to effect contrast in B&W photography, it is not recommended for color photography as the entire image would be red.
