The 4.5" with non-threaded #47 Blue Filter from Tiffen is a filter designed to build contrast in black and white photography and creating separation between the tones. For landscape photography the filter will enhance haze and fog, which creates a more dramatic look. Skin tones are lightened for more detail and contrast control. Normally, the filter is intended for B&W photography, but can also be used in color photography to make special effects. The filter has a filter factor of 4.5, so you must increase by 2 1/3 of a stop for your exposure to compensate.

Tiffen filters are not dyed, but are manufactured by using ColorCore technology. This process laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass and grinding down and polishing the glass. The glass is finally mounted to the metal ring, which could finally be screwed onto the lens for the desired effect.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How does this 2x2 filter attach to the front of the camera? It doesn't say what kind of attachment is needed.

A: 2x2 filters are to be placed on lights, rather than the camera itself. Certain lights will have a holder built in.

Q: 2. I was wondering if I can mount this on my 90mm smc Pentax lens for my Pentax 67II

A: No, your lens takes a 67mm bayonet filter.

Q: 3. Does this have female threads so you can stack filters?

A: Yes, the Tiffen 82mm Black Pro-Mist 1/8 Filter has 82mm female filter threads on the front of the filter which allows you to connect another filter or lens cap onto the front of the Tiffen 82mm Black Pro-Mist 1/8 Filter.

Q: 4. Is the thread for this filter 0.75mm pitch or 1mm?

A: The thread pitch would be 0.75mm.

Q: 5. What is the outer diameter of this filter ?

A: According to Tiffen, they state that the 4.5” filters are not threaded, as it is a drop-in style filter made for adapters. As such, the 4.5" size reflects the total size of the filter (which includes the outer diameter) which would fit into a 4.5” holder.

Q: 6. Does it fit on 67mm?

A: The filter size is "Filter Wheel 3", this is for a drop in system and is not 67mm. To find 67mm Tiffen Fog filters search the B&H website for "Tiffen 67mm Fog"

Q: 7. Hello, Can I screw this filter on a tiffen variable ND ? If not, is there any way to cumulate these filters together ( 72mm both)

A: You can screw this first on the lens and then tiffen variable ND on to this

Q: 8. Will the 5-pin xlr work for comm as well as tally?

A: Yes it will. The 5-pin XLR is for both Talkback and Tally.

Q: 9. Will this filter fit the Canon 70-200 lens?

A: This filter will fit the f2.8 version of the 70-200 but is too big for the f4 version of the 70-200 lens.

Q: 10. Is it possible to screw another filter on top of this one, like add a variable ND ?

A: Yes, this filter will have 82mm front filter threads

I use the Tiffen blue grad filter when shooting slide film; enhances blue sky conditions; keeps skies from over exposure on cloudy days. This is one filter I literally cannot do without.

You have to know your lenses capabilities, to choose the best diffusion filter for that cinematic look. If you have a razor sharp lens this is the adequate amount of diffusion. Lovely look.

need no further introduction. I have been using the Tiffen Black Pro-Mist 1/4 for years. I bought it again just because of the size.
I would say 1/4 strength is the middle spot, depending on your set / lighting situation. At night in the city with all the street lamps and signs, it looks fantastic. Indoor lighting will do good as well. I tend to not use it during the day unless approaching sunset or the scene is backlit.

I'll be using this filter in a feature film we'll be shooting in about a month. It does exactly what Tiffen said it would do in their description. In our test shots it created a very nice fog effect. If you where to be shooting with any type of breeze you would have problems using a traditional fog machine. However with the fog filter you don't have to worry about the fog being blown away. Great effect.

I wanted to buy a NISI 4x5.45, but it turned out to be very expensive for me. This one is just right. I use adapter rings for different lenses. I recommend

Softens lines and spots for nicer portraits but doesn't blur every detail.
