A truly wide-angle prime featuring a rectilinear optical design, the silver Pentax K-mount Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D from Venus Optics is specifically meant to limit distortion for clear and accurate portrayals of landscapes and architectural subjects. The optical construction also incorporates a pair of aspherical elements and three extra-low dispersion elements to control both spherical and chromatic aberrations for improved sharpness and reduced color fringing. A Frog Eye Coating has been applied, too, to repel dust and moisture from the front element of the lens to benefit working in trying environmental conditions. Benefitting the optical attributes, this lens also features a precise manual focus design along with a floating optical system to maintain accurate rendering throughout the focus range, from 7.09" to infinity. Additionally, a petal-shaped lens hood is also incorporated into the lens' design to reduce flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.

Ultra wide-angle prime designed for full-frame Pentax K-mount DSLRs, this 12mm f/2.8 can also be used with APS-C models where it provides an 18mm equivalent focal length.

Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited to working in low and difficult lighting conditions.

Rectilinear design renders subjects with minimal distortion in order to suit landscape and architectural applications.

Three extra-low dispersion elements reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color neutrality. Two aspherical elements are also featured to limit spherical aberrations for improved sharpness.

A Frog Eye Coating has been applied to repel both dust and moisture for added protection when working in inclement conditions.

Manual focus design employs a floating optical system to maintain performance throughout the focusing range of 7.09" to infinity.

Built-in petal-shaped lens hood shields the lens from stray light to reduce flare and ghosting and also protects the front elements from accidental impacts.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How does this lens perform when adapted to other cameras like Sony A7iii or Panasonic S1?

A: Both the a7III and the Panasonic s1 are going to work best with native lenses without adapters in terms of auto focus. But because this is a manual focus lens I trust that you are not looking for auto focus. For the price this is an excellent manual focus lens for either camera.

Q: 2. Is this lens for Canon RF is the same as for Canon EF with just a different bayonet, or is it a native lens redesigned for RF? Will it make any differences compared to an EF version on EF to RF adapter?

A: Yes, these are the same lens, just with different lens mounts. Optically they are the same. There should be no difference between using the RF mount, or using the EF mount with a good adapter.

Q: 3. The question is will these fully manual lenses work on EOS R cameras with one of the three adaptors? There is a report of the EOS R not firing because it didn't see a lens.

A: Since this lens has no contacts, you will have to go into the camera's menu and select shoot without lens, which will allow you to fire the shutter for a lens of this type.

Q: 4. Is this for full-frame or cropped sensor?

A: This is a full frame lens.

Q: 5. Is there any lens hood with this lens?

A: There is no additional lens hood that comes with the Venus Optics Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Lens for Sony E because it has a built-in lens hood.

Q: 6. Anybody have any experience with the bmpcc4k using metabones?

A: This is a full frame Manual lens therefore it is compatible with all of the Metabones adapters (standard MFT to EF as well as the 0.71x and .064x speed boosters).

Q: 7. Is there a MSC for Canon RF mount?

A: Not currently. Unfortunately this is only currently available for the Sony E-Mount.

Q: 8. Anybody try this lens on a Nikon D850? If so, how does it work?

A: This lens would offer excellent performance when paired with the Nikon D850.

Q: 9. Does metering work properly when stopping down the lens using a canon dslr? The lens has no cpu contacts.

A: Yes one can use stop-down-metering on most Canon SLR cameras with the Venus Optics Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Lens for Canon EF (Black).

Q: 10. I get severe distortion on both sides of images in the form of stretching. Is anyone else having this issue or do I have a defective lens?

A: That sounds like perspective distortion. That is normal. For example ceramic tiles on a wall will look larger, distorted, and stretched in the sides of the photo, but in the center they will look normal. That is perspective distortion. That is the same as going on the bottom of a large building, looking up, and the sides of the building look like they are converging instead of being straight. The zero distortion this Venus Optics Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Lens has is barrel distortion.

Using this lens for landscapes and love the image quality. Well built, small, and a lot of value for the price. Highly recommended!

Perfect wide angle lens for your Z Cam E2. It's a must have when you need that extra wide shot yet not distorted look! Build quality is great but just a little lose on the mount. Not a biggie.

As this is not a fish-eye, this is really must have lens for wide angle pictures for Fuji F-X and other SLT. Great quality, almost no distorsion.

The zero distortion on this lens is what really makes it! You can get some really interesting angles while keeping a cinematic look. Great colors too. Highly recommended.

I use this lens with an X-T1 body to take pictures of rooms, room contents, and to make indoor panoramas (using a pano head and rail).

I can report on filter usage. I use a Sensei Pro 49-77 step up ring to mount 77mm filters or a 77mm adapter for the Formatt Hitech 85mm aluminum filter holder.  There is no image obstruction with the 77mm Nikon circular polarizer II or with two filter holders on the Formatt Hitech with short screws.

I use this lens to make timelapses with a Sony A6500 and I am more than satisfied.

Well they didnt lie when they said zero distortion. Vertical lines stay vertical. The only issue of sorts is heavy vignetting but I find it easy to clear up. Well worth the money.

I'm a wide-angle kinda guy, so when I saw this lens existed I felt compelled to get it for my X-T2. And I'm glad I did - not only is it small and light (thus easy to carry along all the time) the difference between the angle of view of this 9MM and the Fuji 10-24 (which I have had for a couple of years now) is astonishing - attached are two quick comparison photos I took from the same position (camera was tripod-mounted) of my game room - you can see how much wider the 9MM angle of view really is.

If the review site allowed me to upload another image, it would be of the two lenses side by side, just to show the remarkable difference physically between them.

Bottom line - if you enjoy UWA shooting, this is the lens to get.

Compact, light, beautifully made, sharp.  There are a number of excellent reviews that can easily be found via a web search.  This is a fully manual lens but the depth of field is generally large enough that one can focus crudely (or guess) and get the focus right.  One negative for me is the absence of a chip, so that there is no record of the f-stop used.  The obvious choice for those who want or need to travel light.
