The 67mm 6pt/2mm Star Filter from Tiffen creates multiple points of light, or "stars," streaking outward from a central light source.  This filter comes in a rotating mount for critical placement of the star effect.

Wedding photographers will especially appreciate the value of this filter. When it comes to special effects shots, why not offer your client a table shot of the menu or invitation next to a glowing, star-filled candle? Shooting at night? Make that street lamp take on a different, more dramatic appearance by using the star filter. Any point light source will achieve the effect.

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is produced through a process that entails permanently laminating the filter material in between two pieces of optical glass that are ground flat to tolerances of a ten-thousandth of an inch, then mounting them in precision aluminum rings.

The effect is produced by a series of thin lines etched into the flat optical surface of a clear filter

The size and brightness of the star lines produced are first a function of the size, shape, and brightness of the light source: You have additional control through the choice of a particular spacing between the lines on the filter

These spacings are measured in millimeters and range from 1mm to 4mm: A 1mm spacing has twice as many lines as a 2mm spacing and will produce a brighter star for any given source

Lines in one direction produce a two-pointed star, just a streak through the center of the light

Tiffen offers 4, 6, and 8 point symmetrical star effects as well as additional asymmetrical star patterns through their exclusive Hollywood FX Series (North, Hyper, Vector and Hollywood star effects)

Tiffen's ColorCore glass is sealed between two optical glass sheets. In this way, Tiffen can better control the various densities of their filters and thereby create more exact degrees of filtration. This process makes for greater accuracy of color as opposed to glass that is simply dyed and become subject to deviation during the dye process

Tiffen, a leader in the filter industry, proudly makes its filters in the USA and backs up its products with a solid 10-year warranty

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi I just purchased this and there is no magnetic adapter ring included and the filter itself is not magnetic and will not magnetically attach to my freewell magnetic base. I am confused. Can you explain?

A: The Freewell 82mm UV Filter BH #FRFW82UV UV doesn't come with an additional magnetic ring. The UV filter functions as a magnetic lens adapter ring that allows non-UV Freewell magnetic quick-swap filters to be used on a lens with 82mm front filter threads. Its rear-threaded filter ring allows for the convenient installation or removal of non-UV Freewell magnetic quick-swap filters.

Q: 2. Is the front edge of this filter threaded for stacking another filter in front of this one, like a polarizer?

A: Yes. I just screwed one of my other filters to the front of it to verify.

Q: 3. For my Sony 18-105mm F4 lens. Would you guys recommend that I get the Zeiss 72mm UV filter or the Sony 72mm MC filter? I'm leaning towards the Sony brand for the continuity of having the same brand but not sure if both filters are exactly the same in design. I own a Sony 35mm F1.8 and a Sony 49mm MC filter andthe filter fits my lens like a glove.

A: Just to add to the previous comment to make it clearer: The are the same - just branding difference.

Q: 4. Is the 1mm filter version available too?

A: At this time we only offer the Self-Rotating 1mm Blue True-Streak Filter as a 77mm filter. We do not have it as 82mm. https://bhpho.to/2ML0A6p

Q: 5. what is the warranty for the 52 and 58mm HD3 UV, HD3 CPL and variable ND filters?

A: Hoya filters carry a limited lifetime warranty.

Q: 6. Does this fit on a 35mm sigma lens?

A: Yes, these Close Up filters will work on your Sigma lens. First you need to determine the filter size on your Sigma lens then purchase the Close up filter size to match. For example, if you lens has a 58 mm filter then buy the 58 mm close up filter. My lens has a 67 mm filter size, that's why I purchased the 67 mm close up filter.

Q: 7. Is it affective?

A: Yes, this filter works very well to reduce light pollution and produce cleaner sharper images.

Q: 8. Are the Zeiss Filters compatible with Nikkor lens?

A: See no reason why not. It depends on the front filter thread size of the Nikkor lens. Should be compatible with 67mm.Good luck'Shmulik

Q: 9. How many stops does this filter add to the exposure time?

A: An R72 filter will block about 7 stops of light but it will vary depending on the time of day, time of year and the anti aliasing filter that is built into your camera. Different times of the day and year have different amounts of IR light which will affect your exposure times. So you will need to experiment.

Q: 10. Does this particular filter downgrade image sharpness in any way vs. not using a filter at all?

A: Technically, any glass layer in a lens system scatters light and decreases sharpness. However, the reality is good filters will not affect sharpness to any degree you can see. Frankly, other factors such as camera shake, focus, subject movement, aperture, lighting and contrast have far greater influence on image sharpness than a quality filter such as this one.

After reading the reviews and checking out a couple of review videos, I decided to buy this one instead of the Heliopan. Is the Heliopan better? Well, Yes, but you're paying around 120% more for a filter that's maybe 15% - 20% better. The Tiffen filter indeed adds a little contrast to your image and I did see a little green tendency, BUT it's barely noticeable and it's easily fixed in post. Didn't see the X pattern that some people mentioned, but I did mantain the dial between the second and next-to-last dots, so I guess it appears only when you take it too far.

Very good filter, I use variable nds for video as it's faster and easier to expose for your shot on the fly. Especially when using a gimbal. Try to avoid the max of the filter or going past it as you will get vignetting. I also own the tiffen 4 pack of nds which are beautiful but tough to use for critical moments with extreme differences of light. That is why I decided to go with the variable.

I can't operate without this filter when filming outside at F4 with the 48 Shutter and low ISO. This is about the third one that I own on multiple camera. This is an excellent tool especially if you are shooting a lot of outdoor videos.

When I first tried twisting it, it was extremely stiff, but then I figured that inner metal ring covering the outer filter must be screwed in too tight. So I grabbed a thin metal ruler and carefully loosened the ring. In the picture you'll see a 2 little notches - one at the 1 oclock position and the other at the 7 oclock position. Those let you twist the inner metal ring.
