Featuring a slim design, this 28mm f/2.8 Lens from Opteka is a Sony E-mount prime offering a 42mm equivalent focal length. The modest f/2.8 maximum aperture promotes a thinner, pancake-like form factor that is ideal for travel and everyday use. Its optical design incorporates one super-low dispersion element to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations while an HD anti-reflection coating has been applied to suppress ghosting and flare for increased contrast. Additionally, the lens sports a manual focus design and its manual aperture ring has been de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture transitions.

This 28mm f/2.8 lens is designed for APS-C-format Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 42mm equivalent focal length.

Slim pancake design makes this lens especially portable and ideal for everyday use.

One super-low dispersion element is used to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and color accuracy.

An HD anti-reflection coating has been applied in order to suppress ghosting and flare for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.

Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Manual focus design along with a manual aperture ring offer precise control over both focus and exposure, and the aperture ring has been de-clicked for smooth, silent f/stop changes to suit filmmaking applications.

All-metal construction is durable and depth of field and focus distance scales have been engraved on the lens barrel for pre-focusing needs.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will is lens work on Cannon M50 ?

A: Yes it will. The Canon M50 is an EF-M mount camera. This is an EF-M mount lens, they will work with each other.

Q: 2. May we use it on a Panasonic GH5? What we need extra to fit onto a GH 5?

A: No, the Nikon 1 version cannot fit on the GH5, however if you get the micro four thirds version it will fit on the GH5 and that is without an adapter.

Q: 3. Will this lens work on full frame cameras?

A: No, it will not. The Opteka 12mm f/2.8 Lens for Canon EF-M, B&H # OPTM1228C, is designed for use with the smaller Canon EF-M lens mount, and is not compatible for use with the larger Canon EF lens mount. If you are looking for an inexpensive full-frame 12mm lens for use on the Canon EF lens mount, the Samyang 12mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye Lens for Canon EF Mount, B&H # SA12F28FFFLC, would work for your usage needs. I personally feel the best option would be the Venus Optics Laowa 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D Lens for Canon EF (Black), B&H # VE1228CEF, at the 12mm focal length.

Q: 4. What is the material of the lenses? Glass or plastic?

I had a number of good manual focus wide angles for the A7R that worked well for landscapes, but for fast moving subjects like people, this lens has proved to be every bit as good as I had hoped. The details I got from wide open f/2 shots were excellent, and all across the full frame. It was priced reasonably, and not overly heavy and handles well.

Using this prime wide angle lens on an A7-II. Punches above its price point: Solid construction, sharp stopped down a little, pleasant color rendering, and low distortion with in-camera correction. Definitely an improvement over the 28mm-70mm Sony FE kit zoom at the same focal length.

I bought the lense about a month and a half ago, since then that is the only lense I have used in all my trips (Portugal, Middle east, Sri Lanka and Back to the US) No other lenses beats the quality, portabilty and speed of this 28mm. I do carry a second body with a 70-200mm VRII but for 90% of my photos I use my A7s with this great lenses.

I bought the Sony SEL28F20 lens because it is small and lightweight. It also happens to be a great lens. First, let me say that I am a Nikon user, but last year I purchased a Sony A7 with the Kit lens as a travel camera when the price dropped. I'm now in my late sixties and I have a bum neck and worn out rotator cuffs. My two heavy Nikon bodies D610 and D800 with heavy to really heavy lenses attached are becoming intractable for walk around photography. This past Spring, my neck was stiff and sore for days after walking around in the desert for a couple of hours with a D800 and a Sigma 180mm 2.8 macro ca. 5.5 lb together. Something had to give, so I've decided to invest in additional Sony FE lenses. I'm sticking with primes for now. The 28mm is the first and I will purchase the 90mm FE 2.8 macro when it becomes available. Then, maybe the 55mm f1.8 and maybe the A7II or A7RII next year. This lens is incredibly compact and light 200 g and together with the A7, weighs only a little over a lb. with the A7 ii, a smidge heavier. I can carry the combination all day with no neck strain. I'm not a pixel peeper, but after examining some test shots, this lens appears to be quite sharp. DxOMark rates it as highly as the Sony/Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 both tested on the A7R and at almost half the cost. Distortion is pronounced, but is correctable in post-processing. I haven't noticed any chromatic distortion; I haven't tried to purposely induce it, but according to DxOMark it is not as well controlled in this lens as it is in the 35mm f/2.8. Again this can easily be corrected in post processing. Anyway, CA is not nearly as pronounced as it is in my Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, which is pronounced at almost all apertures and focal lengths and especially bad below 50mm. In short, I'm very happy with the Sony FE 28mm f/2. It is a vast improvement over the kit lens at that focal length. Carrying it attached to the A7 reminds me of the good old days when I had a Pentax MX and SMCM 28mm f/2.8.

This lens at 28 mm and f2 is actually a game changer for the A7r, because with it I can finally reliably get clear in focus images that fully utilize the enormous potential of the a7r sensor. And it does this with a hugely useful field of view for many kinds of shots including especially much better low light images than achievable with the many f4 lenses provided for this camera. It is easy to take strikingly clear in focus shots, partly because it has a greater natural depth of field than any other lens I have used with my A7r. This is the best all round lens for the A7r to date, and with the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 allows image quality to equal that from the D810.

I generally prefer the FE 55mm f/1.8 which is basically the best overall prime I've ever seen. But, there are scenarios where I need something wider. I thought the FE 35mm f/1.4 was the answer but later realized it's far too enormous for the same quality of life I was getting with the 55mm lens. So here comes the 28mm, less than 1/3rd the price, a little wider, a stop darker, and absolutely tiny. I figured it must be garbage. Nope. The 28mm lens is the poster child of optical compromise. Without corrections it's highly distorted, but, very sharp. It has noticeable CA but it's easily corrected. It's actually wider than 26mm which is great, because, that means the final corrected image will actually be 28mm. You're getting what you are promised. It's bright. f/2 on Sony A7 II is as bright as any normal shooter is ever really going to need. It's wide enough to shoot socially at a table. The 55mm struggles here, it's just too hard to get groups and the context into a shot in close quarters. So that's why I own the 28mm. Bottom line: Images come out looking excellent. Sometimes bokeh is a little rough, but, this lens isn't about that. It's about close quarters, low light, low profile shooting. And it doubles for a number of other tasks. Add the adapters and get a decent ultra-wide landscape lens (21mm) or a fun fisheye lens with AF. Even at 28mm, you are probably really familiar with that angle of view since it's only slightly wider than most cell phone cameras. This lens is part of my B kit. I only need it for low light situations where the 55 is too long. But, I could see it being part of an A kit for someone who appreciates the smaller size and prefers wider angles all the time. It's a great lens. The value here for FE mount is second only to the 55mm f/1.8.
