The 3 x 3" Tiffen Combination 85B/ND Filter blends both an amber color conversion 85B and a 0.3 neutral density filter. The ND filtration provides a 1-stop exposure reduction for darkening the entire image in order to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. The 85B filtration covers the entire filter plane and converts the color temperature to 3200K for use with type B (tungsten) films.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass, and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 3 x 3" / 76.2 x 76.2mm.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. This item has a warning on it stating that it is not safe for solar photography or viewing the sun. Is it suitable or not?

A: The warning, is meant for viewing. The filter does not protect the eyes from harmful light of the sun. So use the back of the Screen of your camera or a mirrorless camera.

Q: 2. Why the notice that this solar filter is not safe for solar viewing???

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is designed for photographic use and is not intended for use as a viewing filter. It will protect the camera sensor, not the human eye.

Q: 3. can this filter be used to record the upcoming solar eclipse on my hpx 370 camera?

A: Yes, this is the correct filter for recording a Solar eclipse on your Panasonic HPX 370 camera.

Q: 4. Is it safe to use this filter with a tracked 700mm lens on a Canon EOS R for the duration of the eclipse (~3 hr)?

A: Yes, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter is designed to be used for Solar Eclipses and other solar phenomenons.

Q: 5. Is the Tiffen solar ND, 18-stop filter (P/N TI77ND54) a true neutral density filter, or does it give an orange tint?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (77mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is a true neutral filter and doesn't give an orange tint.

Q: 6. Pls confirm that the 46mm filter will fit in the rear drop-in slot of a Nikon Z 800mm? i.e. it's not too thick

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (46mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is incompatible with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S Lens. Solar filters must be on the front of the lens to be safe. Get the MrStarGuy Adjustable Objective White Light Solar Filter (145-175mm OD), BH #STSGFT043B.

Q: 7. Does this have hard stops or does it continue to turn past the min or max?

A: The Tiffen MCS Variable Neutral Density Filter (77mm, 2 to 8-Stop) does not have hard stops.

Q: 8. Is this Solar filter ISO 12312-2 certified?

A: Unfortunately, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is not ISO 12312-2 certified. It should not be used to look directly at the sun with our eyes. It can be used for the camera to take a photo of the sun. Look only in the LCD live view to compose the photo. Do not look in an optical viewfinder.

Q: 9. If I’m shooting an eclipse event but not the sun/moon itself—just people—is this filter still necessary to protect my gear?

A: If you are not taking photos of the sun then you don't need a solar filter.

Q: 10. How is it ok for shooting the sun but not for viewing with the naked eye? How do you compose & shoot without viewing the frame?

A: The camera is not as sensitive to infrared and uv from the sun like the naked eye is. You can compose and shoot using the LCD live view.
