This 77mm Tiffen Water White Glass NATural IRND Filter is a neutral density filter with a 2x filter factor that provides a 1-stop exposure reduction. Its 0.3 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By increasing your aperture or slowing your exposure time, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters are intended to not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and to promote nearly flat attenuation of visible light and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times.

This filter is noncoated, is constructed from Water White glass for increased clarity, and features an aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability while remaining lightweight. It is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this ND fader have circular or linear polarizing?

A: Hello David, we have used Circular Polarisers inside the ND Fader.

Q: 2. whats is the front thread size for 67mm?

A: The Haida PROII CPL-VND 2-in-1 Filter (67mm) has a front thread size of 72mm; the mounting thread is 67mm.

Q: 3. What does the MRC in the name mean?

A: The letters MRC in a filter refer to the multi resistant coatings. The SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter has 18 layers of coatings on each side for optimal quality and for water- and oil-resistant performance.

Q: 4. Are Minimal = 2 stops and Max = 8 stops? How do I read the marks on the ring to know 2/4/8 stops?

A: When I am using the Eclipse I never worry about what stop I am using. What difference does it make? All I am interested in doing is getting it dark enough to be able to slow down my shutter speed so that I can get the effect I want. I never have to change filters if the 2 stop or 6 stop isn't enough, I just rotate the filter. Don't think about what number it is just use the the darkness you need. Hope this helps.

Q: 5. Which stack caps or covers fit this filter for protection when not in use?

A: There are several caps for the SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter on the product page, under the "Accessories" tab: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1681507-REG/smallrig_3590_77mm_mrc_variable_nd.html/accessories

Q: 6. will this fit the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors?

A: YES IT WILL FIT.

Q: 7. Is the thumb screw removable for use w/ a lens hood?

A: According to the manufacturer, the thumb screw on the the SmallRig 77mm MRC Variable ND Filter can be removed. However, SmallRig recommends not to use this filter with a lens hood.

Q: 8. Is the circular polarizer compromised at all by the dual function?

A: The dual function does not compromise the circular polarizer feature on the Haida PROII CPL-VND 2-in-1 Filter (77mm).

Q: 9. does this filter cast any color stint such as magenta on the photographs taken in the night on New york citi sky/building photographs?

A: Yes it is a slight magenta cast which when used in proximity to city lights, evens out the warm colorcast from the city lights.

Q: 10. I've got 3 Canon lenses each with 67mm on the filter end. Does it make any sense to buy 77mm Eclipse filter and a step-up ring 67-77 (just to cover the range of lenses that I maybe will plan to buy someday) ? I'm very afraid I can get vignetting with this setup because I often shoot with wide-angle (10-18mm focal length, APS-C). Or maybe the right way is to take 67mm model of Eclipse?

A: I purchased one Eclipse Variable ND filter and step up rings to use with my Nikkor lensesand have found it to be a good choice. Vignetting is not a problem for me and I have been pleased with the results. Especially in motion film work.
