The classic standard zoom now featuring Vibration Reduction image stabilization, Nikon's AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR Lens is a truly versatile wide-angle to short telephoto lens characterized by its constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and electromagnetic aperture mechanism. A revised optical design incorporates a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element, in addition to three aspherical, two extra-low dispersion, and one high refractive index elements, to help reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to achieve high image sharpness and clarity. The Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings further benefit image quality by reducing lens flare for improved contrast and color accuracy and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements protect against dust, moisture, and smudging.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, a Silent Wave Motor AF system produces quick, quiet focusing performance that suits both stills shooting and movie recording, which can instantly be manually overridden by simply turning the manual focus ring. Further contributing to photographing in fast-paced situations and difficult lighting, VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops. Additionally, an electromagnetic aperture mechanism is integrated into the lens design to provide greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with faster continuous shooting rates.

Standard zoom designed for use with FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens is also compatible with DX models where it will provide a 36-105mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.

A unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element is incorporated into the optical design, along with three aspherical, one high refractive index, and two extra-low dispersion glass elements, to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, distortion, coma (comatic aberration), and flare for consistent edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.

Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Weather-sealed design, a rear rubber gasket, and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements are able to withstand dust and moisture for working in harsh environments.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is Tamron 24-77 f2.8 G2 as good as this lens, for a Niokn dx body?

A: Is a Kia as good as a BMW? Or, when a lens is about half the cost of it's competitor, can it be the same quality? The answer is no. However, what is really the question is the Tamron good for those who buy it? For shooters that have to consider the cost/benefit, will paying $1000 more gain significant advantages? Conversely, what do do they lose paying $1000 less? I would say it depends on the intended use. if this is for your hobby and weekend use doing sports or action or landscape and you make prints for your wall or local gallery, the Tamron will do just fine. If you are going to be using it on an everyday basis in a business, then the Nikon is worth every penny in build and image quality. BTW, both of these are full frame/FX sensor lenses. They both will cover the sensor of a APS-C/DX sensor body easily.

Q: 2. Can it fit with Nikon D7200?

A: Yes but with a cropping factor for DX bodies

Q: 3. From the reviews I'm gathering it looks like the improvement versus the old G version is the addition of VR and optical formula is an improvement but not by much, correct?

A: I tried the Nikon 24-70 FR lens but sent is back because I did not think the Image Quality was very good. I think the Tamron 24-70 is better. The Tamron has excellent image quality and the VR is great and that is what I now own a am very happy with it.

Q: 4. Made in Japan?

A: Don't know where the lenses made but if you have the Nikon 810 camera this lens is amazingly sharp it is a great product I love it

Q: 5. Does this lens have an internal zoom? Does is increase in length when zoomed?

A: The length of the lens increases about an inch.

Q: 6. It’s 2020. Still made in Japan?

A: Yes.

Q: 7. I saw some reviews complained about softer images at shorter focusing distance. and it may caused by significant focus shift. Can some one please test/confirm this for me? I wamt to make sure if it's a good portrait lens at close range.

A: I have used this lens for the last 6 moths and do not see any softer imaging at short distance, although it is not as sharp all-around as the Sigma 35 1.4 Art lens and he Sigma 50 1.4 Art that I use for most of my wedding portraits. The Sig 35 I use for family group shots and the Sig 50 1.4 Art Lens and the Nikon 85 1.4 I use for portraits I do over 80 Weddings a year and 75% of the time I have two cameras hanging on me D810 and a D4 with a 70 -200 2.8 Nikon and the 24- 70 2.8 Nikon these two lens have some downside but overall they are the two lenses I use most and have 100's of very happy Brides.

Q: 8. Unlike the Tamron 24-70 this does not come with tap in console. is this an issue? Or does this lens not need calibration?

A: If a Nikon lens ever needs a firmware update, you would need to send the lens in to Nikon directly.

Q: 9. Does this lends work with D750?

A: I purchased this lens for my D750 and have used it almost exclusively since doing so. I used the 24-70 for some longer shots and was able to still reasonably crop in tighter with very acceptable images.

Q: 10. Is this the USA warranty version or the import version?

A: Our imported versions of the Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR say "Imported" next to the product/B&H SKU codes. This is the page for a Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR with a 1-year Nikon USA warranty.

This is my first 24-70 ever, never used the older one but I love this lens. It is fast and sharp and can almost handle any situation for my photography. I am not a professional photographer but I use it for my business and as me hobby. Love this lens.

I always thought that I was getting sharp enough shots at this focal range without VR - until I tried this lens. I do a lot of concert photography, which means I have to choose between high ISO and slower shutter speeds. The VR let's me keep the ISO on the south side of 3200, so I get cleaner images in the camera. Some testers say that the overall sharpness doesn't measure up to the non-VR lens. I say that you probably have to put them on a test bench to find any difference. In the real world, I am getting more usable images with the VR lens. Virtually every concert shot is dead on from a technical standpoint. In daylight, VR lets me get a little lazy and I know that I will still get a shot. This makes a real difference when you are shooting a 3 or 4 hour event when you start to get tired or careless towards the end.

After much research and deliberation, I decided to invest in this new Nikkor lens. From the moment I unpackaged my new lens I knew I had just stepped up my game! Immediately, I noticed this lens is heavy (2 lbs. 6.4 oz). This is due to the new vibration reduction, large (88mm) front optics, and 20 lense elements. The lense is solidly constructed and seems very durable and the zoom and focus rings are smooth and responsive - unlike the less expensive plastic body lenses. The auto focus on this lens is incredibly fast and it works in low-light situations where my other lenses would fail. The coatings Nikon uses help to make colors pop and photos very crisp and clean. The large 9-blade aperture creates beautiful bokeh, An interesting fact: the overall length of the lens changes as you zoom. However, the bayonet type lense hood is fixed mounted. This results is the lens extends within the hood. So at certain zoom levels, the hood is less effective. All told, this lense will allow you to capture beautiful photos that may escape much slower focusing lenses. I highly recommend this lens to anyone looking to buy serious equipment or looking to up there game

Much better than the 2.8G, VR is an useful feature. A little bit heavy but not a big deal.

I own the Tamron 24-70, Nikon 24-70 non VR and the new Nikon 24-70. I have shot with the new lens for about 2 weeks and have found it sharper than the old lens, in the center but especially across the whole frame. This has given some very interesting results. The focus is instant and nearly silent. But what I really like about the lens is the colour and contrast, which is PHENOMENAL. The increased detail across the frame and fantastic colour rendition has given truly fantastic pics. The bokeh seems a bit smoother too. It also seems to have better light gather capabilities with brighter pictures. Don't listen to the whiners going on about it is big and heavy and too expensive. It is only a little bit longer and a little bit heavier than the old one. If it is too expensive, get something else and quit your whining! If you want the best possible pic quality in a highly refined zoom lens, this is the ticket. The 24-70vr is an incremental improvement in every way on a legendary lens. It is a true, pro level zoom lens that I find significantly better than cheap primes (Nikon 35 1.8 and much better than the 50 1.4 or the 85 1.8 at the longer end). When I take this lens out, the effort Nikon put into making it makes for a really sweet shooting experience, then I get the awesome results when you download... Perhaps you were confused, like I was, by some negative reviews; don't be. I am very demanding of my lenses and expect a very high level out of them. The Nikon 24-70vr has given excellent results in comparison and in real world usage. It is a keeper.

I am a Wedding Photographer and do a lot of Weddings and Portraits, I sold the old vs of the lens last year and decided to go with the Nikon 35 2.8 and was not happy at all. I traded it in after only a few month for half of what I paid for it and bought this lens and so far I am very happy. Lens is Sharp, much sharper then the old vs and a lot sharper then the Nikon 35 2.8.
