The ATH-M40x features 40mm dynamic drivers with rare earth (neodymium) magnets and CCAW (copper-clad aluminum wire) voice coils for high-quality sound reproduction.

The drivers and headphone design work together to provide a sonic signature tuned flat for accurate sound monitoring across the entire frequency range. With a frequency response of 15 Hz to 24 kHz, the ATH-M40x can reproduce a full spectrum of tones.

The ATH-M40x utilizes a circumaural design that contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments. This over-ear, closed-back style is optimal for reducing bleed and separating you from outside sounds.

Equipped with 90° swiveling earcups, the ATH-M40x ensures a great fit and allows effortless one-ear monitoring, a welcome benefit for DJs and singers. The earcups fold up to meet the headband, saving space during storage. A carrying pouch is supplied for protection and convenience while transporting the headphones.

To expand its versatility, the ATH-M40x incorporates a detachable cable design that exits from the left side. This enables convenient cable swapping and makes it easier to distinguish the different sides of the headphone. Two cables are included—a 3.9 to 9.8' coiled cable and a 9.8' straight cable.

The attached cable is terminated with a gold-plated 3.5mm TRS mini plug for easy hookup to mobile devices, MP3 players, and computer headphone jacks. If you are worried about your productivity when purchasing gear, and don't want to loose time into comparing hundreds of brand's specs and reviews to see what is the best option for your money, then just grab these headphones and get some work done after getting them into your hands: they won't disappoint. These are meant to be used for monitoring purposes. They are practical and utilitarian. They are very much not for audiophiles. We use them for monitoring audio while recording with a multi cam setup in our studio. They are light, their design is proved to work, the construction is proven to last forever (our older pair is still like new after years of use - and we don't baby them), they isolate what you need to hear, and they are cheap. 5

I'm not a professional voice-over person, but with the COVID-19 situation, I occasionally need to make videos instead of in-person technical presentations. I got tired of cleaning up my plosives and siblings using just my MacBookPro speakers (pretty good for a laptop, but ...). So, I looked at many reviews for a reasonable priced set of headphones to do the trick and settled on the Audio-Technica ATH-M40x. I am super happy with my choice - nice clean, crisp and as promised a relatively flat response, which made my clean-up work much much easier. They sound good for general music listening too - even though that was not my purpose for the purchase - nice side benefit. 5

These headphones have many good reviews from pros who use studio headphones for mixing and editing, many recommend M40x rather than the more expensive models. I am not experienced enough to evaluate them like a pro, but I will say that they seem to pick up sound very accurately - they are not noise cancelling though, but I think noise cancelling headphones are a lot more expensive. If you have a small head (like I do) they fit perfectly and are very comfortable. The included coiled and longer cables are a nice bonus. 5

My preference was always Sony headphones, until I discovered these headphones. Headphones these days are designed to enhance pop music experience, altering the sound, boosting it with ton of bass, and hiding minor sound details. This particular model (ATH-M40x) does not alter the sound, which makes it ideal if you have to monitor sound, or do video and sound mixing for video editing -- which is what I do. These requirements were also the reason why I chose these over the M50x model. I'm very happy with these! The sound reproduced by the M40x is so clear, accurate, and undistorted. Also listening to your favorites songs is like a brand new experience! Until using these, I wasn't able to listen some sound details, particulary voice and low frequencies. With other headphones, those sound details were just not there. That completed my sound quality tests with a 5-star rating. The only thing that did not fully meet my expectations was the construction quality; although it seems somewhat strong, I give it a rating of 3 stars. B&H shipped and delivered these within a day. Totally recommend it. 5
