The Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features a 4/3" sensor for capturing up to 4096 x 2160 DCI 4K images at rates up to 75 fps in a variety of codecs including Blackmagic Raw at several bit rates and various ProRes 422 options. With the 6.6 update, the BMPCC 4K now offers up to 80 fps in a 2.8K raw mode for 4:3 anamorphic and up to 75 fps in a 4K raw mode in 2.4:1 widescreen. A 2x de-squeeze preview is available for 4:3 recording as well as a 1.33x de-squeeze option. Slow-motion rates up to 120 fps are available in 2.6K raw for Super16 lenses and in cropped Full HD. The 6.6 update makes operating easier with support for the Pocket Battery Grip and a built-in horizon level function. Further 6.6 update features include support for additional languages, USB PTP control, customizable frame guides, an up to 8x pinch-to-zoom function, the ability to embed custom LUTs as metadata in Blackmagic Raw, and more.

The Micro Four Thirds lens mount accommodates the original, lightweight Pocket Cinema Camera lenses, and can be used with PL, C, EF, and other lenses with the use of separately available adapters. A dual-native ISO up to 25,600 is featured for low-light capture, and 13 stops of dynamic range provide rich HDR images.

Record using the internal CFast 2.0 and SD/UHS-II card slots or employ the USB Type-C output for capturing longer clips to an external drive. The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K's 5" touchscreen LCD reduces the need for an external, onboard monitor, while a full-sized HDMI port enables you to output a signal to a larger display. The menu and interface are the same as the ones found on the URSA Mini camera, and 3D LUTs can be applied for monitoring or baking in your look when you're ready to commit.

Audio features include a mini-XLR input with phantom power for pro-style mics, a 3.5mm jack, and an internal stereo mic. Additional features include the same Blackmagic OS as the URSA Mini and Bluetooth remote control. A license key for DaVinci Resolve Studio is included for versatile post-production control. The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K's carbon fiber composite build provides lightweight strength and durability, and power options include running off the included Canon LP-E6 type battery or the included power supply.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Any huess on how well the BMPCC 4K will work with the Panasonic Leica 100-400mm and Ronin-S?

A: Two things: 1. We feel there is a strong possibly that the lens will be too long to properly balance on the Ronin S and: 2. A 100-400mm is too long a lens for a stabilizer. The problem would be keeping the subject in frame unless they are a hundred feet away. Generally, stabilizers work the most effectively with wide lenses. A lens like the Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens B&H # PA123528A would be far more appropriate.

Q: 2. Will the camera be compatible with remote controls through gimbals like the Ronin-S? Specifically focus or start/stop recording? Maybe via USB-C?

A: At the moment it is not compatible, but it is something we are looking into.

Q: 3. Question for Blackmagic - How many mm of thickness is the filter stack of this camera? Most m4/3 cameras have 4mm, but the previous Blackmagic cinema cameras had just 2.4mm

A: If you are referring to the IR filter in the camera, it's 1.4mm thick. We conform to the MFT specification regarding lens mount so all MFT lenses will fit and there is no fear of any mechanical interference.

Q: 4. How long is the Canon LP-E6N battery recording in 4K and recording in HD?

A: We will need to wait for this camera to be released for real team results on the battery life. However we feel the battery should last between 45 minutes to an hour.

Q: 5. hello, does this camra records raw 4k vidos in 60 fps ?

A: Yes.

Q: 6. Is there a 1.8x anamorphic Desqueeze Mode for display?

A: When using 2.8K anamorphic format on the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, the camera applies 2x anamorphic desqueeze automatically.

Q: 7. Can you set up the camera so it can just be turned on with power and always maintain the same settings? This would be for a church setting where it will always be aimed at the same spot.

A: Yes, the camera will retain almost all of the settings during a power cycle.

Q: 8. Whats the best adapter for Canon EF lenses and how does the autofocus work?

A: I cannot recommend adapters. Auto focus is a single focus not continuous. You may tap the viewfinder at the area you want to focus.

Q: 9. Which other BM camera is the most similar in image quality to this one?

A: Color wise, if would match well with an URSA Mini Pro if it were on Gen4 color science. Dynamic range wise, it's similar to the original BMCC and Pocket Cinema Camera.

Q: 10. Will there be a video light or flash built in???

A: No there is no light or flash.

Perfect size. Portable. Great image and versatility with lenses. Upgraded/downsized from my Blackmagic Production Camera 4K. Great decision.

This camera is very reminiscent of the early days when the HVX200 just landed on the scene and blew expectations of what can be achieved on an indie level out of the water. The BMPCC4k is a powerhouse of a camera that comes in at such a ridiculous price that it makes it hard for me to justify my RED purchase. Being able to shoot 4k using the .BRAW format is such an amazing feature and adding either the metabones 0.64x for full-frame lenses or the 0.71x giving me about an extra stop of light and the ability to use canon glass is amazing. Pairing this camera with the Sigma 18-35mm is amazing. Everything is amazing about this camera. I'm trying to think of any downsides. I can only say the battery life is the biggest drawback, but those LP batteries are so cheap, I bought about 8 extra batteries which kept me going for a full day. This camera has one of the best user interfaces I've ever seen on a camera. Other than the battery life gripe, I wish this thing had a movable LCD monitor. Sometimes when shooting at low or high angles, being able to view the monitor is kind of difficult. All in all I'm extremely satisfied with this purchase.

Firstly - the picture is excellent. I have never owned a BM camera before but the hype is deserved. You can read specs and stats all day, and it has less range than some other cameras. BUT in terms of getting an excellent skintone and good highlight roll-off, this is up there with Canon and Arri. It's not how many stops the camera can hold, it's how things fall into place making PICTURES - and this seems to keep all the bits in the right places.

I own a lot of Sony gear and use a lot of Sony gear and love it - but Sony doesn't make it easy to get good skin/rolloff, this does. And this does it very affordably. Excellent B-Cam for Alexa - the BMPCC4K Film-Video V4 LUT is a great starting point match to K1S1 (Alexa).

Other Positives - Timecode input! FINALLY! XLR Audio Input w/ Phantom, great menus, super flexible recording media options (the Samsung T5 drives work beautifully), 4K Prores.

I pair this camera with a speed booster .71x to roughly equal super35 and keep focal lengths consistent. That's a huge reason this camera is great vs. the newer 6k - full-chip recording in 4k. My clients are barely doing 4k and hate RAW - so being able to do 4K Prores without windowing is a killer feature.

Negatives - bad port placement makes it difficult to rig the camera. No SDI. Bad battery life (but lots of options for the power itself, and cheap cables available). Screen impossible to see outdoors and doesn't tilt. That's really the only huge issue. I'm not a DSLR person so I'm sure these are issues with most DSLR.

I previously owned and used a micro cinema camera and the 2.5k cinema camera.
The Pocket 4K is in a whole new league of it's own.
The quality it can produce is amazing. The flexibility of the MFT mount has been great for adapting EF lenses along with some older Nikon and of course native MFT mount lenses.
Looking forward to seeing some features to support anamorphic shooting and future updates as time goes on.

I’ll preface this post by saying I am a Blackmagic snob.

I’ve pretty much owned every camera they’ve ever made, other than their live production gear.

Now that I’m 60 I got rid of most of the heavy camera rigs and use the 4K and 6K pocket cameras.

I slightly prefer the Rendering of the 6K but that’s not saying that the 4K is lacking in anyway. It’s just a slightly different look so when you’re using both cameras on the same shoot you just have to work a little bit in color grade to match the shots.

I’d also say that I would never hang a lens on the 4K camera that’s not at least a 1.6 f-stop. And I’ll also preface this by saying that I pretty much refuse to bring an ISO level above 400. But that’s just me.

This is the camera you want if you're looking to step up your game! The picture quality is stellar! Low light is also the best I've seen! It fits.comfortably in my hands also which is big for me.

So I'm a member of the Longview Film Club, we make short films. Kinda like a community theater with a camera. LOL. We added pretty much the whole EdelKrone ecosystem to our toolkit this year.

Two years ago we bought the cinema 4k. And we've been in love ever since. It was a big jump for us. Going from A Panasonic AF100, which was an HD camera, to a 4K was a scary jump.

To get the most use out of it, that meant embracing RAW format, 12 bit sized files. That meant more computing horsepower, etc. Our whole work flow was about to be thrown into chaos! But no, Black Magic came to the rescue.

This camera's support of BM Raw format, make it accessible to literally anyone. Even an older computer can handle it.

There are a million things to say about the camera, and you can find a million people saying them on youtube. So here are the ones that I think a person considering using this camera should know:

1 - The dual ISO is fantastic. We routinely shoot at 3200 for night shots. Almost no visual noise.

2 - RAW is King. Buy an external USB-C SSD harddrive, best cheapest option for camera storage.

3 - Go ahead and shoot in Q12:1 mode. You have to examine the footage with a magnifying lens to tell the difference.

4 - Make the jump from Adobe to BlackMagic Resolve/Fusion (free full copy comes with the camera). When you free your mind from the constraint of layer-based thinking, and embrace the node-based approach, it lifts the veil. It's a beautiful world out there when you peel back the layers. LOL.

We added a second camera this year, and plan to add a third next.

It changed our world.

It's hard to get one of these, I waited one year, multiple pre-ordered failed to deliver in the UK so I turned to B & H in USA. Within 2 months I had one. Amazing Camera. If you are looking at this review I expect you already know why they are in short supply. Not like any camera , not to be compared with mirrorless cameras , they are excellent and better than this camera in many ways. But this camera is a film camera and not like anything at the price.
