Sporting a 26.5 lb load capacity at a weight of only 3.4 lb, this black Befree GT Travel Tripod from Manfrotto is designed for professional photographers needing a reliable travel companion for their DSLR or mirrorless cameras. It features a sturdy carbon fiber construction, reaching a maximum height of 63.8" with the center column extended and 54.3" when the column is collapsed. For storage, the tripod folds down to 16.9" in length and can be easily carried in its included padded bag while traveling.

Each leg of the Befree GT is composed of four sections, which can be adjusted and secured in seconds thanks to the M-lock twist locks that operate with a simple 90° turn. A side-pull selector allows you to unfold the legs and lock them at three different angles, making for an easy way to regulate your height. Complementing the legs is the equally robust 496 ball head, which offers a dedicated knob for panoramic movement as well as a friction control knob for precise control over the tension during use. The final element is a quick release plate, which is compatible with both RC2 and Arca-type clamps except for the Manfrotto 804-3W and MH804-3W tripod heads.

An Easy Link attachment is available at the top portion of the leg section, and allows you to connect optional accessories such as flashes or reflectors. This enables you to use the tripod as a support system and reduce the amount of gear you need to carry while travelling. Additionally, rubberized feet are used to avoid skidding and help keep the tripod stable in most types of terrain. The Befree GT is compatible with both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threaded mounts, thanks to an included bushing adapter that allows you to switch between the two screw sizes.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi. Can I use my sony A7 IV on it?

A: Yes you can mount and use the a7IV on the Befree GT XPRO tripod. The head and legs can support up to 26.5lbs.

Q: 2. Can the head come off for attachment elsewhere? And if so, is it a standard 3/8 inches screw? Quick clarification (just in case): By head head I mean the 496 Ball Head and not the custom Sony plate. Thanks!

A: Yes, the Manfrotto Befree GT Travel Carbon Fiber Tripod with 496 Ball Head for Sony a Series Cameras can come off for attachment elsewhere. The head features a 3/8" inch inner thread.

Q: 3. Will the ballhead work with a peak design standard ARCA plate?

A: You would want their Peak Design dual plate that works on both arca-swiss and 200PL. https://bhpho.to/3eSdzxm

Q: 4. Does the head of this tripod have a level bubble?

A: The tripod nor the head have levels. You can purchase a hot shoe bubble level as an alternative. Click the link below to view; https://bhpho.to/2ZPMXGn

Q: 5. Can you use Manfrotto 504HD Video Fluid Head with this tripod?

A: You can, but the legs are a bit on the light side to support the 504 head.

Q: 6. Can it be used without the center column?

A: I'm sorry, no, you cannot use this tripod without the center column.

Q: 7. I have an older Nikon DSLR (D5300), do I need an adaptor to mount it on this ball head?

A: No, the Nikon D5300 DSLR Camera (B&H # NID5300B) does not need an adapter to mount as it is compatible with the 1/4"-20 mounting screw of the Manfrotto Befree GT XPRO Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with 496 Center Ball Head (B&H # MAMKBFRC4GTX).

Q: 8. What's a good way to add weight to this tripod? There is a button and no hook on center column. There is a flimsy carry strap attachment point on the tripod base that doesn't install confidence. I am thinking of using stainless steel eyebolt in the 3/8" easy link socket and hanging my backpack on that unless someone has better suggestions.

A: To add stability to this tripod, you can get a tripod apron, click the link below to view; https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=tripod%20apron&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma

Q: 9. looking for a camera lens for my trip to Paris. I have a sony alpha 6400 and a mc-11 teleconverter. I assume at wide angle but I have no idea.

A: While the above does not list a specific question, if you are asking if the Sony Alph a6400 Mirrorless Digital Camera and the Sigma MC-11 lens adapter woud be compatible for use on the Manfrotto Befree GT Travel Carbon Fiber Tripod, as long as the camera/lens/adapter combination weighs less than the 22 lbs maximum load capacity, yes, the setup you list would be compatible for use on this tripod. If that was not your inquiry, I would have to recommend to e-mail your full inquiry to askbh@bhphoto.com for assistance.

Q: 10. Is it possible to replace the kit ball head with 496 Centre Ball head with Top Lock plate? I mean include the other ball head in the kit instead of the original 496?

A: No. The ballhead is integrated into the unit and cannot be replaced or swapped out.

Reasonably light for the cost and easily holds my gear (Nikon D850 with 24-70 and 70-200 f2.8). The height is just right for me as I don't need to extend the center column much (I'm around 5 ft 8 in). Used it in the canyons in Utah. The tripod is more stable than I expected and though there is some plastic (the center column lock) the tripod feels robust.

I use this as my second tripod for shooting time lapse with my a6500.

The tripod is well built, lightweight and sturdy. Small enough to carry or add to the backpack with the other, heavier tripod.

I like that it came with a carry case and the ball head it OK, but I've got other ball heads I prefer to use.

Got it while on a flash sale...great price, could not refuse.

If you’re really being honest and comparing specs, you simply can’t do better than this tripod at any price, let alone anywhere close to 400 bucks. The comparable Gitzo is double. 3LT nearly so, RRS...are you kidding me? This tripod folds to under 17 inches, weighs 3.5 lbs, goes to over 65 inches, and is an Italian-made beauty. I’m serious, put it next to any of the others and tell me they are worth more money. Unless you desire the more exotic pieces as a status symbol, this is clearly the one you’ll choose in this category. I find it to be rock steady, tight, and refined. In this online-oriented world, I suspect people just assume due to an inability to examine in person that the $800 models must be better but seen in person, they just aren’t. If I have one gripe it’s that Manfrotto still clings to the proprietary RC2 mounting mechanism on this model. It’s a very good mounting system, but the problem is nothing else works with it. Fortunately a $40 Arca conversion is available to solve that problem. This model is only available with a head because it’s a design which folds back on itself, and so you need a head that is narrow enough to permit this, just FYI. I wondered why you couldn’t buy legs only but it dawned on me once I worked with it. It’s a superb head though, and proves you don’t need to spend $400 on a head.

Once the Arca issue is addressed, I simply can’t come up with a negative about this exceptional tripod. It goes to show you, when you’ve been doing it as long as Manfrotto, you learn a thing or two.

The Tripod that I used for the past four years was a Manfrotto 290. It was a heavy-duty Aluminum tripod. I could not justify the cost of a Carbon Fiber Tripod so I have been using the 290 until it was stolen a few months ago. This time, I did not let the price stop me from getting a Carbon Fiber Tripod. I purchased the Manfrotto Befree GT Travel Carbon Fiber Tripod with 496 Ball Head.
It is a great Tripod. It is light-weight, yet strong enough to handle any camera/lens combination.

This is a great little tripod which I use for travel or quick day trips. I own the Manfrotto BeFree One and 190 (aluminum) but usually grab the BeFree GT for hiking and/or overnight treks. It holds up well in water, mud, and snow. Ive had no issues with twist locks; they stay secure. No need to over loosen to open the legs, quarter turn does the trick. It is light so Ive had it blow over (w/o camera mounted) in high winds. However, never an issue with the camera on it. Ive used it with my MFT Olympus and my Nikon D810 with a 70-200 attached. No worries on maintaining the bigger kit. When I do want the extra security, I grab the 190. Overall, a great everyday all weather tripod  - just keep an eye on it during very high wind. Enjoy.

The tripod is easy to use, light weight, high quality, and a great value. After also purchasing and installing the MSQ6T Arca-type adapter, it now works perfectly with my pd Capture clip. To add this clip, it was just unscrew the old adapter screw, remove the Manfrotto adapter, add the MSQ6T Arca-type adapter, and screw it back in with the same screw. Now hiking and landscape photography is a dream. It would be hard to find a better value for a quality tripod!
