Q: 5. Does the Peak Design Dual Plate and/or Standard Plate work with this 496 tripod head? I have read on the support website that some (but not all) RC2 heads are compatible. Thank you!

A: According to the "Using Peak Design Plates In 3rd Party Tripods" webpage on Peak Design's website, under the "Incompatible Tripod List" section, they state that they have received reports that their Capture plates do not quite work with the Manfrotto ARCA Style tripod heads. While they do have a webpage called "Manfrotto Tripod Compatibility with Peak Design Plates," they do not list the Manfrotto MH496-BHUS ball head as a compatible option on their webpage. If you wish, you may purchase the Dual Plate to test if it will work on your ball head. If it is not compatible, do note you may return the quick release plate for an exchange or a refund.

Several features are much better than previous models!
First, the 200PL-PRO plate that accompany's this ball head will fit both 200PL mounts as well as Arca Swiss mounts, making the need to replace my 200PL plates I have on all cameras & lens collar rings not necessary! If I ever switch to Arca Swiss mountings on any ball heads, these plates will mount to them! ...
Second, the friction adjustment for the ball head is now within the ball head locking knob & is really easy to set. Plus, this adjustment feature will not totally unscrew from the knob as my older ball heads friction knob has done several times, losing the knob & screw that holds the knob onto the ball head ...
Love this small but mighty ball head set up! ...

I am very impressed with this ball head! It is very secure and holds very well. The tension control does not slip and is great! I also like the new camera plate design. For the price, you can't ask for more. It is a little taller than I expected, but that is not an issue. This one is a BUY!

The Manfrotto 496 ball head seems like a good tripod head. The base of the head is smaller than the older mounts for the Bogen/Manfrotto tripods so the set screws don’t really lock into anything. It’s got a locking/tension knob instead of a lever so it seems with big objects on top it might be a little more of a challenge to reach the knob. It’s got a separate pan lock that is a very small knob and though it is useful to have a separate release for the pan, especially for video, I think I would prefer just one locking lever for everything. Other than these preferences it seems like a great head though it seems hard to believe it will hold a 22lb object mounted on it. That said, the ball head seems to lock well and be sturdy. I do have a concern about making sure whatever I put on it locks properly into the quick release. I haven’t had any problems yet, I just got the ball head, but the lever on the quick release seems like it might not engage the quick release plate without a good visual double checking. I’m also using the older 200PL quick releases. I am a former professional photographer however I’m currently an artist/painter looking to use this to support an outdoor painting easel.

Upgraded to a taller Manfrotto tripod and purchased this head as well. I've used it three times with my Nikon D850 and it works great. All adjustments were secure, easy to adjust and reliable. I've had excellent experiences with my older Manfrotto tripod and head, and this head seems just as solid.

This is my second Manfrotto ball head, and in all honesty, my first model (468MG) is better (has more range). But it cost twice as much in unadjusted 2011 dollars, so I would expect that.

The important thing is that this head perfectly meets my needs, which are simple: This is part of a fixed overhead photography rig in my studio, one in which I will need only minor plane adjustments in daily use. A head that cost twice as much would've been a waste of money.

Probably my only complaint is that the locking tab is plastic; metal would make me feel more secure. We shall see how that holds up.

Also, I appreciated the extra quick release plate that came with it - you can never have too many spares.
