The Schneider 4 x 5.65" True-Net Gray 2 Filter is designed to purposely create a net diffusion effect within an entire scene or image. Embedded inside this filter's glass is a gray-colored stocking material that softens focus and reduces glare, which can be useful for creating a more flattering image of a subject or scene. The stocking material's gray color can help maintain a scene's existing color balance while reducing contrast. By applying the Schneider 4 x 5.65" True-Net Gray 2 Filter instead of pulling a stocking directly over a lens, the desired net diffusion effect can be consistently and reliably obtained by eliminating the risk of overstretching or tearing the stocking material in use.

When the respective film type or white balance setting that corresponds to the primary light source is selected, those combined diffusion, contrast, and color effects can be obtained while this filter is used on a film camera system or on a digital camera system. Film cameras with black-and-white film installed or digital cameras configured to record monochromatic footage or imagery can utilize the Schneider 4 x 5.65" True-Net Gray 2 Filter's diffusion and contrast effects only.

This filter has a grade of 2. A grade of 1 is also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately half as strong.

Schneider True-Net Beige Filters that can add a warming hue to the entire scene or image are separately available. Schneider True-Net Black Filters that can help maintain a scene's existing color balance and contrast are also separately available.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. The overview for this Variable ND filter states that the effect is achieved by "...stacking highly neutral gray polarizing filters..." If so, will this filter also work as a good polarizing filter? I need a polarizer + ND filter for waterfall photography, so I was wondering whether a separate polarizing filter is needed in combination with this filter.

A: The Schneider True-Match Vari-ND MKII Variable Neutral Density Filter (82mm) does not act as a Polarizing Filter. A separate Polarizing Filter is necessary to get the Polarizing effect.

Q: 2. Does this filter stop at each end of the adjustment or does it rotate past the end of each adjustment?

A: There are stops at each end on the B+W True-Match Vari-ND MK II Variable ND Filter.

Q: 3. How does it compare to B+W Vario ND 1-5? What is the front size? B+W's front size is designed at 86mm for less vignette. Even so, I did find vigenette at 24mm on my 24-105 lens. How about the color shifting? B+W is shifting green on 1-3 stops.

A: The front filter thread of this filter is 82mm. Most filters will begin to vignette to some degree at 24mm. Color shift is nearly always present when using variable ND filters, but how much varies between filters.

Q: 4. Are the copywrite character overlapping with the letter ‘c’

A: No it does not look like the lettering overlaps with the copywrite character at all.

Q: 5. Will the lens hood of the Sony 70-200 GMII fit with this filter installed?

A: The Schneider True-Match Vari-ND MKII Variable Neutral Density Filter (77mm) front threads are 77mm. Since the filter does not expand in the front ring, you can keep the lens hood on the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens attached.

Q: 6. Anyone have issues with reflections? I just purchased and when filming light I'm getting reflections on the glass. Any tips on not getting that?

A: In my former career, I was a motion picture camera assistant. As such, part of my job before each take was to make sure there were no reflections or hot spots of light hitting the front lens element or the filters. I would use a matte box with top and side flaps to get rid of most of the problems. The rule of thumb was if I was using a longer lens, I could take care of it with the matte box and flaps. However, if using a very wide lens, a matte box and flaps are no good because if you set the flaps to get rid of the flare or hot spot, they are visible in the frame. When that happened, I would ask one of the grips to set a flag at the source of the flare, be it a movie light or the sun. If it was a moving shot, the grip would have to "fly" the flag to make sure the light did not hit the lens. Now, what can a regular guy do without a grip department? Use a sunshade or matte box or a french flag. You might be able to move the offending light or the camera enough to get rid of the flare. Just know if you cannot stop the extraneous light from hitting the front end of the lens, it will be in the image to some degree.

Q: 7. Can you tell me what country this product is made in? Also, would it be suitable to store large round screw-in lens filters up to 92mm? Thank you in advance.

A: It's made in China. It can fit 95mm filters, so you can definitely use it for that.

Q: 8. Does it have a front accessory place? Can I put another screw on filter on top of it?

A: Yes, Schneider 82mm Hollywood Black Magic 1/4 Filter has 82mm front accessory threads. You can attach another filter on top or the lens cap.

Q: 9. Will this filter screw into a 67-82mm step up ring and can another filter be stacked/screwed into the 82mm Schneider...?

A: Yes this will screw into 67-82 step up ring and it does have front thread

Q: 10. will this reduce moire in video of fabric?

A: I don't believe it will reduce it, just soften the effect.
