Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How do I replace the drive?

A: After inserting a new blank hard drive, you need to put the LS-210D into EM mode and update the firmware using a TFTP image from Buffalo's forum. This site does not allow be to link to site with the answer, which is too complicated to post here. Goto forums . buffalotech . com and search for LS210D dead hard drive/new hard drive install .

Q: 2. compatible with time machine?

A: Yes, the Buffalo Linkstation is compatible with Apple Time Machine.

Q: 3. does this have a two drive failure protection?

A: When using RAID 6 on this Buffalo TeraStation 64TB 5810DN 8-Bay NAS Server (8 x 8TB), you would be able to get two drive failure protection.

Q: 4. Can these drives be upgraded with larger capacities or even SSD drives?

A: The Buffalo LinkStation SoHo 720 8TB 2-Bay NAS Server is compatible with a wide variety of replacement drives, but only up to a maximum of 16TB on board.

Q: 5. How noisy is the fan and does it run continuously or only when hot?

A: Buffalo has not provided a spec for the ambient noise level of the TeraStation Essentials 4-Bay NAS Array, nor information on fan programming. Customers have reported that fan speed can be managed via the Buffalo NAS OS.

Q: 6. I want to use this for video editing on my computer. Is the speed decent or is this not suggested for video editing and storage?

A: For storage it would work well. For editing footage directly on the drive it will depend on your expectations. It would be slower than using a HDD or preferably as SDD.

Q: 7. Can you edit 4K footage without lag?

A: For 4K video editing, a 10G connection would be recommended. The Buffalo TeraStation Essentials 32TB 4-Bay NAS Array Rackmount only has a 2.5 GbE connection, so it would not be recommended for this purpose.

Q: 8. Can someone post a picture of the back of this unit? Six pictures of only the front are not that useful. Thanks!

A: I will notify the web team to add the back of the NAS server; here is a link to a picture from the manufacturer of the back of the system: https://shop.westerndigital.com/content/dam/store/en-us/assets/products/desktop/my-cloud-pro-series-pr2100/gallery/my-cloud-pro-series-pr2100-Rear.png.wdthumb.1280.1280.webp

Q: 9. Is this product compatible with a network that is primarily consists of Apple Mac computers/workstations?

A: NAS are mostly OS agnostic and can in most cases be used with any OS.

Q: 10. Does this NAS Index with MAC OS? what can be expected with locating and retrieving 25 TB worth of image files

A: If you are referring to Spotlight indexing, the Mac OS has that turned off by default, however it can easily be enabled with one command. The WD My Cloud PR4100 is fully compatible with the Mac OS, and once mounted will be just as accessible as a directly attached drive. Keep in mind that as this is a NAS you will be limited to the speed of your network accessing files.

This was an upgrade for my media files (Movies, Music, etc.), which I pervious had stored on an 8TB easystore. I was using Plex to access them from my apartment in the city as well as my home at the shore. With the upgrade, I was able to expand the use to include all of my business files so I can access them anywhere at a moment's notice. This is proving to be a big benefit so that my work does not wait for me to get back to my home base!

I ordered the WD My Cloud 32TB 4-Bay NAS Server from B&H and after a few days I realized that I had ordered the wrong item I want the the PRO not the EX so after about a week I call B&H told them what I had done and the said no problem shipped out the WD My Cloud PR4100 32TB 4-Bay NAS Server I wanted and set up a RMA for the return of the 1st NAS... they even sent the return postage label all in about 8mins... one call that's all. AND that is why I use B&H the CX service is the best in the industry.

This is my 3rd generation of WD NAS units currently running. They get bigger and faster with every one I buy, but they are all still running great. I like it much better (no comparison) than the odd ball Seagate NAS in the picture. I will buy more WD units as needed.

Very easy to setup, about as hard as falling off a log. I store digital media including audio and video on these units and stream it on my home network to any TV in the house with ease. I can have multiple TVs streaming the same movie at the same time without issue. The transfer time runs at about 112 mb/s from my PC to the PR4100 which is over twice as fast as my 1st gen EX units which only run at about 46 mb/s over my network.

I also use it for my daily backup of my PC and can store anything I like on them. I dump all my pictures from our phones to it also so they don't run out of space. I can't say anything bad about them. I have only had 1 drive fail that I had to replace in all the years I have had them and it was very easy to swap out and was even covered on warranty. Once swapped, it will automatically rebuild the drive for you.

You won't go wrong with one of these.

The PR4100 is preconfigured in RAID 5. It was simple to set up and configure, and is really fast. I now seamlessly share data between three computers.

I use this mainly for file storage and backup -- it works great for that. I copied all my CDs and DVDs to the disks. The music streaming works fine over our home wireless network. I have not converted my DVDs to streaming format, so I access them as iso files. They work pretty well that way with infrequent, brief stalls due to wireless network latency. It just sits in the corner, not making any noise (except for fan noise during startup) waiting to be accessed by our computers. Overall, I am very happy with it.

The Pro 24TB drive comes configured as a RAID 5 device, giving 18TG of striped reliable storage. It is easy to set up and has really fast access. Now I don't have to keep data on multiple USB drives and I can access it from any of my PCs. Why didn't I do this sooner?

Enormous capacity that can be configured just about any way you could want. It can be accessed in just about any manner you wish over a wired LAN and can be expanded by attaching USB drives. Tremendous flexibility with regard to users, groups and shares. It can be used as back up and/or for streaming to any device on your LAN and accessed remotely. Back up to the Cloud (the one in the sky) is also available with an account - but why would you want to?

Unless you are computer literate, there is a learning curve and I'd suggest that you play with it a while before you place it into service for real. You may have to change something with the configuration and doing so in some cases requires a reset that will erase all data.

I think I'm set for the foreseeable future with this device.

I had the NAS server for about a month. Out of the box it comes configured RAID 5. It boots up fast and the setup through mycloud.com is very fast and easy. The first thing it did was to updated the firmware. I had it up and running in a matter of minutes. A RAID 5 configuration gave me about 17.9TB of empty storage capacity. I connect to the server using 1Gb Ethernet switch and compatible cables. The writing and reading is about 10% faster than what I get from my fusion 7200RPM hard drive. I get on average 110MB/s speeds in both directions. Obviously, I'm limited by the Ethernet connection. So far I'm streaming just music from it. I have a Sonos system which was able to connect very quickly and reliably. I have not tried streaming movies, PLEX, etc. The server comes with several apps installed or available. I'm using Dropbox app to mirror the content and I'm struggling with Amazon S3 app. The issues are not related to PR4100, more related to Amazon services. After some help from the WD tech support, whom by the way responded within 24h with a lot of information, I was able to get the S3 going but Amazon has all kind of issues. The NAS comes with apps to host or develop your own website. I haven't tried it yet but it's very interesting. Very easy to create user accounts. The cherry on the cake is the cloud/remote access. You can access any file from a remote computer or mobile phone. On the phone you can play music or view pictures. Works very well and super fast. I'm very impressed by this feature. I was on a trip outside US and needed a Word file from the server, i downloaded it in a jiffy, edited and uploaded it back to the server without any hiccups. Of course, out of the box the cloud service is not enabled so you have to create accounts and enable the service. The server software is simple, and rather easy to use. I would give it a 9 out of 10. So far I went through 2 power failures. It recovered quickly and without issues,
