The 4 x 5.65", 4- to 3-stop Cokin NUANCES Extreme Z-Pro Series Soft-Edge Reverse-Graduated ND Filte is designed for use with a Cokin Z-Pro Series Filter Holder. It can be applied to darken bright skies, specifically during a sunrise or sunset, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image.

This filter achieves its effect with a 1.2 band of density across its center region that provides a 4-stop reduction in light from entering a lens. This band extends in both vertical directions which tapers to a 0.9 density that provides a 3-stop reduction in light at the edge above it. Directly below the 1.2 band of density, it tapers to clear, with a soft-edged line of transition before the clear area.

The placement of a 1.2 band of density that tapers to a density of 0.9 above it with a clear area directly below, allows the Cokin NUANCES Extreme Z-Pro Series Soft-Edge Reverse-Graduated Neutral Density 1.2 to 0.9 Filter to match the positioning of the sun when it is at, or immediately above the horizon. In such instances, the sun can appear closer to the center of an image as opposed to the upper edge, and an increase in brightness is created that is more prominent on both sides of the sun than above it. This pattern of brightness corresponds to the density pattern on the Cokin NUANCES Extreme Z-Pro Series Soft-Edge Reverse-Graduated Neutral Density 1.2 to 0.9 Filter. The soft-edged line of transition in this reverse, graduated neutral density filter is useful for soft transitions between the sky and land, while the 4-stop to 3-stop gradation is applicable to multiple regions of brightness within the sky.

Cokin NUANCES Extreme filters are constructed from tempered, shock-resistant glass and feature nano-metallic alloy film coatings on both sides of the filter surface to attenuate infrared light while maintaining true color fidelity, even when stacked with other Cokin NUANCES or NUANCES Extreme filters. Anti-glare coatings further help to reduce surface reflections for increased contrast and clarity, while additional hydrophobic coatings result in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency. Additionally, Cokin NUANCES Extreme filters feature C-shaped edges. This rounded edge shape resists chipping to further enhance durability.

  • This filter is compatible with a Z-Pro Series Filter Holder.
  • Effectively darkens bright skies, specifically during a sunrise or sunset, while allowing for a normal, unaffected exposure in the other regions of the image.
  • 4-stop band of density that tapers to a 3-stop density at the edge above it while directly above a clear area creates a neutral density pattern that matches the positioning of the sun when it is at, or immediately above the horizon.
  • 4-stop band of density extends in both vertical directions.
  • Density pattern corresponds to the brightness pattern of the sun when it appears at or is closer to the horizon as opposed to a higher angle, which creates an increase in brightness that is more prominent on both sides of the sun than above it.
  • Soft-edged line of transition between the 4-stop band of density and the clear area below it is useful for images where the transition between sky and foreground is indeterminate, such as images featuring mist, fog, or the tops of trees.
  • 4-stop to 3-stop gradation is applicable to multiple regions of brightness within the sky.
  • Filter does not affect the overall coloration of the image.
  • Tempered, shock-resistant glass construction maintains high optical clarity with low reflectivity.
  • A nano-metallic alloy applied to both sides of the filter attenuates infrared light and ensures neutral coloration even when stacked with other Cokin NUANCES or NUANCES Extreme filters.
  • Anti-glare coatings help to reduce surface reflections for increased contrast and color fidelity.
  • Hydrophobic coatings result in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.
  • C-shaped edges resist chipping. further enhancing durability.
  • Padded filter pouch included for storage and transport.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. The Formatt Hitech 85mm rectangular filters say they are compatible with this specific product, however, this product's specs say it only holds 84mm rectangular filters. Is the discrepancy important? What gives?

A: The Formatt Hitech 85mm rectangular filters will fit in the Cokin 84mm filter holder. There is enough wiggle room. Besides, what is a silly millimeter between competitors?

Q: 2. Work for Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Lens?

A: Yes, the K&F Concept Nano-X Pro Variable ND2-ND400 Filter (49mm, 1-9 Stop) will work on the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 Lens.

Q: 3. Does it come with a lens cap?

A: No it does not. I purchased an 82mm one separately.

Q: 4. I purchased this filter from you earlier this month. The filter ring is oversized . Can you recommend a lens cap that would work with this filter? Thank you. - Michael

A: The front filter thread size of the B+W 72mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC nano Filter is 77mm. As such, any 77mm lens cap should fit onto the filter. If you need a particular recommendation, then I would recommend the Sensei 77mm Center Pinch Snap-On Lens Cap, B&H # SELC77, for your stated needs.

Q: 5. Will format Hitech 4x6 filters work with this?

A: These items were purchased as a gift. I never used them.

Q: 6. Can I use this wallet for the 100mm format hitech system ?

A: The filters will be the same size so it should fit other 100mm filters.

Q: 7. I plan on using this filter with my canon 70-200mm L series lens. Will I still be able to use the lens hood with this filter?

A: K&F Concept 77mm Nano X-Pro Magnetic ND2-32 (1-5 Stop) Variable Neutral Density Filter is very wide in the front and the lens hood in the Canon 70-200 is very narrow so the lens hood will probably not work with the filter unfortunately.

Q: 8. will this filter vignette with the Canon EF 16-35mm F4L lens?

A: I'm a Nikon shooter, so my answer is in that context. I no longer have my Nikkor 17-35, so the best other lens I could test it on is my Nikkor 12-24, which is a DX lens (also a 77mm diameter). Yours, however, is an FX lens, so I don't know how that may affect the comparison. I tested it on the D800, in full format mode. I noticed the beginning of vignetting when the focal length was 19mm. I did it a few times, and that was consistent. So, if this is in any way accurate, you can probably expect to lose a few mm of focal length at the3 wide end when you use this filter. I don't know if this filter is made in a thinner version for wide angle use. Hope this helped.

Q: 9. is a five stop density enough to get the milky effect on water falls and ocean ? I am also looking to photograph motion ( still images) not sure if if i need a denser filter or five stops should suffice.

A: It would mainly depend on the amount of ambient light on the scene and your camera's settings as to if 5-stops would be enough for your needs. For most lenses, and if using the camera's lowest ISO setting, 5-stops should be enough for you to create a situation to have a shutter speed between 1/4 sec to 4 seconds, depending on the type of waterfall and available light restraints. If you use a low ISO, a mid- to small aperture, and a shutter speed between 1/4 sec to 4 seconds (or test for your needs), then the B+W 82mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC nano Filter would work for your needs.

Q: 10. The image looks extremely thick, is this filter thin?

A: The B+W 77mm XS-Pro Digital ND Vario MRC-Nano Filter is 12.3mm (0.48 inches) thick.
