A long-reaching telephoto zoom characterized by a sophisticated optical design and advanced image stabilization technologies, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens is part of the esteemed L-series developed for full-frame EOS DSLRs. One fluorite element and one Super UD element have been incorporated into the lens' construction, and both help to reduce aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range in order to deliver notable clarity, image sharpness, and faithful color reproduction. An Air Sphere Coating has also been applied to lens elements in order to reduce lens flare and ghosting for more contrast-rich imagery. Benefitting the optical components of the lens, a four-stop effective Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake and can be dedicated to different styles of shooting. Furthermore, a redeveloped rotation-type zoom ring pairs with an internal focusing mechanism, and an Ultrasonic Motor, to deliver quick and intuitive handling to benefit handheld shooting. Positioned as a versatile option for sports and wildlife photographers, this lens' list of attributes make it a viable telephoto zoom for a variety of shooting applications.

Housed within a weather-resistant barrel, this lens also features fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements for protection against fingerprints and smudges from affecting image quality. Zoom control is complemented by a dedicated tension ring for adjusting zoom torque. Additionally, other refined design elements include a tripod collar that can be attached or detached with the lens mounted to the camera and an included lens hood that permits easy control over specialty filters with the hood in place.

Telephoto zoom is compatible with full-frame EF-mount DSLRs, as well as APS-C-format models where it provides a 160-640mm equivalent focal length range.

One fluorite element and one Super Ultra-Low Dispersion element help to correct chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for a high degree of sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.

An Air Sphere Coating (ASC) has been applied to lens elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for maintained light transmission and high contrast in strong lighting conditions.

An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds. Additionally, three dedicated image stabilization modes are available—Standard, Panning, and During Exposure Only—and can be selectively employed to suit a variety of types of shooting.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with optimized focusing algorithms and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

The rotation-type zoom ring offers precise adjustment between zoom positions, especially when shooting handheld, and a zoom torque adjustment ring enables easy setting of the zoom tension for personalized control.

A weather-resistant design protects the lens from dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

A redeveloped tripod collar can be attached or detached from the lens without having to remove the lens from the camera.

The included ET-83D lens hood incorporates a side window for easier adjustment of rotating filters with the hood in place.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Work with m50 ?

A: This lens will only work with a Canon M50 if you have the Canon EF-M Lens Adapter. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/883406-REG/Canon_6098b002_EF_M_Lens_Adapter_Kit.html

Q: 2. Is this lens specifically designed for full frame body or APS-C? For videos and autofocus, does this lens perform equally good in full frame and APS-C?

A: The lens is designed for canon full frame cameras. It will work on an APS-C camera. I don't have an APS-C camera so I can't comment on relative performance but it is a fine lens.

Q: 3. Is this lense refurbished

A: No, the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens, B&H # CA2813535IS is not a refurbished lens; it is a new lens. Refurbished lenses are sold via our Used Department, and would both have USED DEPT listed on the webpage, as well as a condition rating indicating Refurbished. If you are looking for used/refurbished items, you would have to click the USED link on the green bar on the top of our website.

Q: 4. I have multiple lenses now but need a new one. I already have a 55-250 zoom. Its my 28-90 that I am replacing. So, my question is should I get the Canon 28-135 which is a perfect lens for $299 or get a Sigma 18-250 for $350? Need advice.

A: Sigma makes a really good lens, as I have four of them but I also have the EF 28-135mm and it is a great lens and for the price you should go ahead and get it you can't go wrong. It is a very sharp and practical lens, great as a walk around and I can only assume that for that price, Canon will be discontinuing that lens...why I don't know.

Q: 5. Does this first version have weather sealing?

A: No, it doesn't have weather sealing.

Q: 6. The canon lens 28-135mm is compatible on a canon rebel SL1 ?

A: Yes, this lens is compatible with the Canon Rebel SL1.

Q: 7. Is this lens compatible with the Rebel T1i?

A: Yes, the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM Lens is fully compatible for use on the Canon EOS T1i DSLR camera.

Q: 8. Can this be used on a S3 IS, if so where can I get the adapter that is not threaded on one end but quick snap on both ends ?

A: The Canon PowerShot S3 IS Digital Camera is a point-and-shoot camera, and is incompatible for use with interchangeable lenses designed for SLR/DSLR cameras.

Q: 9. how much of an upgrade is this over the 18-55mm lens i recieved with my camera? im either getting this or the travel package by canon. if i get this i will also buy the 50mm prime.

A: If you received an 18-55mm with your camera, then it means your camera is a crop sensor camera. In that kit lens, you range from wide angle to short tele. If you purchase this lens, you will be losing wide angle. 28mm on a crop sensor will give you close to a normal angle of view. But what you lose in wide, you gain in tele. That 135mm on the tele end will give you a lot more magnification of things in the distance. Build quality is much better on this lens and if you ever decide to go with a full frame camera in the future, this lens will work with it as will the 50mm prime. The 18-55mm would be rendered useless on a full frame.

Q: 10. Will this fit canon 6d mark ii

A: This will fit a Canon 6D MKII.

This lens replaced a used Tamron 150-600. Focus is sharper with the Canon although the reach is shorter and the auto focus doesn't work with the 2x Extender. Manual focus with the extender works for daylight shooting with a wide open shutter. Yes, I would recommend lens.

I was looking for a lens with a bit more reach to supplement my 70-200 f2.8, and this lens has proven to give excellent results as well as value to price. I have shot one college football game, as well as a herd of wild mustangs, and in both cases the lens excelled. Focus is spot on in One Shot and AI Servo, and the colors were accurate even under stadium lighting. I was really happy with the football images, some of which were shot at 8000 ISO. All images 5D MK IV.

I upgraded from the original version of this lens. It is much sharper and probably the sharpest lens I own. It is fast focusing and I much prefer it's twist-to-zoom feature over the old push-pull-to-zoom.

I've borrowed and rented this lens so many times that I figured it was time to have one of my own. I'm a landscape photographer who mostly uses ultra wide lenses. The 100-400 provides a different perspective for outdoor photography. No self-respecting photographer should be without it. It's sharp and easy to use. I definitely recommend it.

I use this lens with my Canon7dii. It is the sharpest lens I have ever used and I have several L lenses. During this shutdown time with corona virus I have gotten some great pictures of birds at my feeder handheld at 400 mm. The built in stabilizer and super fast focusing is wonderful!
