The speaker cabinets, drivers, bass port designs, amplifiers, and passive crossovers are all tuned together for the HD6. This, in turn, helps make for a more efficient system that requires less power than passive speakers and a separate integrated amplifier or similar A/V components. Audioengine builds all this into the left speaker cabinet to make it easy to connect your smartphone, tablet, computer, display, network player, or any other audio product.

Audioengine has taken features from the B1 aptX HD Bluetooth Receiver and the D1 24-bit DAC, and combined some of this circuitry inside the HD6.

The Bluetooth built into the HD6 powered speakers features aptX HD coding, which is a Bluetooth audio codec designed to help provide enhanced sound quality. And even if your phone or tablet doesn't have aptX HD, the HD6 Bluetooth solution is backwards-compatible with SBC and AAC codecs, so you can wirelessly stream music from any Bluetooth-enabled device and still enjoy all your music.

The HD6 offers a Bluetooth solution that has up to a 100' range for multi-room use, with virtually no degradation in audio quality.

The HD6 Bluetooth receiver and optical input both utilize the AKM AK4396A DAC, which is designed to provide low noise and high fidelity. The optical input configures the DAC as a bit-perfect 24-bit DAC, which will process sample rates up to 192 kHz natively. For Bluetooth, the AK4396A is used as an upsampling DAC and will pad all bit depths to 24-bits, achieving a higher signal-to-noise ratio and lower noise floor. Due to the high signal-to-noise specs of the AK4396A, the fact that digital signal is upsampled to 24-bits, and the added benefit of onboard triple redundancy power source conversion and filtering, the HD6 Bluetooth implementation is engineered to present impressive low noise and low distortion characteristics.

The amplifiers in the HD6 are located in the left speaker and feature class A/B analog monoblock design. This is designed to provide high-quality audio and greater flexibility, and all the circuit boards for the power and preamp sections are vertically mounted for augmented mechanical shock protection.

Audioengine uses ferrofluid-cooled silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters are engineered to hold up well under high power, and the edge-driven design helps provide a smooth response. The woofers are Kevlar woven glass aramid composite with rubber surrounds. The strength of Kevlar means the woofer retains its shape when being driven at high levels. The HD6 woofers are housed in cast aluminum frames, which help provide high rigidity and increased heat dispersion.

Audioengine uses gapless-core toroidal transformers, which have a tighter radiated magnetic field, translating to lower noise. They are lighter than standard "EI" transformers, and also generate less heat.

The HD6 includes detachable grilles that are held in place with hidden neodymium magnets for a clean look.

  • Dual audio inputs and full-range variable output
  • Optical, RCA, and 1/8" inputs allow for easy connection to a variety of sources, including a turntable or TV
  • Threaded inserts to secure speakers to stands
  • Passive crossovers
  • Aluminum remote control

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How do these compare to the A5+ model?

A: Compared to the Audioengine A5+ the HD6 Bluetooth Speaker System are larger speakers with a bigger woofers and tweeters. These are similar speakers with the main differences been size, and power the HD6 has RMS 100W vs A5+ RMS 50W. When choosing one over the other it is important to consider the space the speakers need to fill.

Q: 2. What is the difference between the A2+ model vs the A1 model?

A: The Audioengine A2+ Wireless Bluetooth Speaker System with S6 6" 210W Subwoofer Kit (Satin Black), BH # AUA2PBTBLKS6 (B&H Kit), offers the following differences over the A1speakers according to Audioengine: The A1 and A2+ are both premium powered stereo speakers, with high-quality aptX Bluetooth for quick and easy connection to any app or device. Modeled after the A2+, the A1 also boasts precision tuned, hand-crafted cabinets, uses the same silk dome tweeters and aramid fiber woofers, and features an aux audio input and subwoofer connection. Where the A1s differ, however, are in the types and styles of connections and the finish style of the cabinets. The A1 speakers use spring clips for the speaker wire connections rather than 5-way binding posts and, unlike the A2+, do not offer RCA or USB connection options. The A1 hand-finished cabinets feature vinyl exterior finish rather than the painted finish offered on the A2+.

Q: 3. Looking to put 2 of these on a shelf on my TV stand. The shelf is 8" high x 4ft wide x 1ft deep. The Audio Engine A2+ at 6" high x 4" wide x 5.25" depth Does BHPHOTO sell a very short speaker stand that I could use to decouple the speaker from the shelf, but still have it fit within the 8" high shelf? ...trying to reduce vibrations going thru the other devices on the tv stand & space is limited. cheers

A: We offer the Audioengine DS1 Desktop Stand for Small Speakers for this compatibility.

Q: 4. Do they support Bluetooth?

A: The Audioengine A5+ does not support bluetooth. If you want to use them with bluetooth connectivity, then you will need a bluetooth receiver to connect to them like B&H # AUB1

Q: 5. Does this system have an optical input ? - I intend to use this with my 32 " samsung TV-(which is being used as a computer . monitor). Sadly, the TV has no RCA , or headphone output, only optical one)

A: Unfortunately this model doesn't have optical connections.

Q: 6. Has anyone used these in conjunction with a Dragonfly DAC?

A: I tried these with a Mac, and the Dragonfly black, and noticed a definite, but subtle improvement in overall sound quality. I was unable to test the better models.

Q: 7. How do this compare to 2 JBL xtreme paired together?

A: The Audioengine HD6 pair will blow away the JBL pair! The JBL Extreme's particular charms are that it is a portable bluetooth system, splash-proof, rugged and battery operated. Oh, and a pair of them would sound great but I recommend them on their own merits and not as a competitor for your affections withe the HD6.

Q: 8. What’s the power connection 220 or 110

A: The Audioengine A2+ Wireless Bluetooth Speaker System power input is 100 to 240 VAC, 50 / 60 Hz.

Q: 9. is there a material i could use to increase separation between the speakers and my tempered glass tv stand? trying to minimize vibrations. using the audio engine ds1 speaker stands ( B&H#AUADS1 ) and they work well. just looking to add an additional thin pad underneath to absorb a little more vibration

A: I recommend considering the Audioengine DS1 stands BH #AUADS1

Q: 10. Can you play more than one input at a time? Will the RCA input work while something is plugged into the 1/8 input? Thanks!

A: Don't know, but they function otherwise quite well. You might see if you can check the manual on this.

Instrument separation, perfect size, portability. Great for my dorm. Excellent bass (unless u do not care about musicality and just want insane bass).

I was upgrading from a small cheap pair of speakers, and looking for something that had some solid bass without sounding boxy. The AugioEngine's are fantastic. They sound great, full of bass and very clear and crisp. Powerful too. Very happy with them. My set up is somewhat odd. A Mac going to a Denon receiver view NuForce DAC. Turntable into the same receiver. Using the RECORD OUT from the Denon to go into the AudioEngines. Works fine, thought it makes me laugh that when i'm listening to audio from the Mac I have about 5 different places to adjust the volume! The sub-woofer might be a nice addition, but so far I don't see really needing it.

The A5+ Wireless looks great and the build quality is excellent. The speakers paired immediately to my bluetooth TV connection (that's a real plus). They can get loud but the high-end is never abrasive and the bass response is clean.

The A5+ are actually my 3rd purchase of Audioengine speakers. I previously owned 2 pairs of the A2's. The A5+ is the update to the A5. It features a few extras missing on the A5 including a remote control with an energy saving mode, and heat fins on the rear. I also added the S8 subwoofer for a 2.1 system connected to my TV. The cost was under $600 for the setup. Before commenting on the sound, I need to provide you with some background. I have been a high end audio junkie since the late 60's owning numerous speakers including Merlin, Magnepan, Apogee, Role Audio, Totem, Accoustat, TDL, etc... so you can say that I am not the typical consumer wowed by the name of Bose etc... Anyway, on to the sound. I first set up the speakers without the subwoofer hooking up the RCA leads to the A5+ main speaker and the mini plug to the Television output. The input for the television was a Fios cable box and Panasonic Blu Ray player both using HDMI. My first impression of the sound was extremely favorable. The bass from the speakers sounded as if I already had a sub attached and voices and instruments seemed to emanate from a very clean clear background. I then attached the S8 and after some careful adjustments I could barely notice the effects. That is until a sub 50Hz sound was produced by the source. Then it revealed itself with some nice tuneful polite bass. No boom at all. It just stepped to the plate whenever needed, never calling attention to itself unless absolutely necessary. In summary, for the price, these speakers are a steal. If I were a starving college student unable to afford the good stuff. Buy these speakers! Even if you have the money to buy something more expensive. Save your money and try these. They are that good.

If you close your eyes you can hear where the different instruments are. Very detailed sound. Bass is great. Not too much, not too little. If you are a bass junkie, get a subwoofer. I just wish it had dust covers and that the USB could input sound.

They were perfect for what I wanted. I have them hooked up to a PC that is connected to my TV. Extra inputs meant that i could wire the speakers directly up to the TV too. Great sound, great size. Would definitely recommend.

....when you play 24bit music on them, they sound so good that you want to applaud. I was playing my Fiio M11 with wireless APTX HD connectivity to my AudioEngine B1 Hi Def Bluetooth Receiver into the rca inputs on my new A5+.
